The Caesar Chronicles: Observations from the Pinnacle of Greatness
A Day in the Life of an Arvat Legend
Caesar and his lieutenants gazed down the long winding fairway. The grass was
beginning to sprout nicely in the blazing Arvat sun. All about them, laborers toiled
at creating sand traps and preparing greens, their coolie hats tied snugly about
their chins as the only barrier against the intense sunlight. It was a magnificent
fairway, some 510 yards in length. Caesar's thoughts drifted away from the present
construction scene to the day that he would be teeing off on this hole....
Meanwhile, a short distance away on the next fairway and near a challenging
water hazard, a coolie laborer was about to make a fascinating discovery. Submerged
within the shallow water of the pond, he noticed a sphere resting at the bottom.
Quickly, he splashed into the pond, with reckless abandon to the potential crocodile
snake presence within, for the golf course was not yet fully cleared of its many
denizens. Construction was still in the early stages. The coolie grasped the sphere
and ascended from the water under the shade of some trees and the worried eyes of his
comrades. It was not yet break time and the other coolies feared he might be
discovered by one of Caesar's Roman foremen, who were never shy about using their
whips to enforce discipline and ensure productivity.
The coolie sat with his knees drawn up and the ball between them. He bent low
over it, looking like a greedy child stooping over a bowl of food, in a corner away
from the others. He lowered his coolie hat and hid the ball from the curious gazes
of the other laborers, some fifty yards away. The air seemed still and tense about
him. At first the globe was dark, black as jet, with the sun gleaming on its
surface. Then there came a faint glow and stir within the heart of it, and it held
his eyes, so that now he could not look away. Soon all the inside seemed on fire;
the ball was spinning, or the lights within it were flaming. It resembled a massive
brick oven flame. He gave a gasp and struggled; but he remained bent, and the lights
became rigid; his lips moved soundlessly for a while. Then with a strangled cry he
fell back and lay still.
The foreman raced towards his position. Caesar, Trebonius the Magnificent and
Lord Darius closely at their heels. The entire fairway labor force was soon astir.
Hastily, Caesar cast his cloak over the globe where it lay. Trebonius stood over the
coolie, who lay with unseeing eyes staring up at the Arvat sky. He took the coolie's
hand, holding his breath to reduce the impact of the wretched body odor. He laid his
hands upon the coolie's filthy brow and muttered some of his high priest magic. The
coolie shuddered. His eyes closed. He cried out and sat up, staring in bewilderment
at all the faces surrounding him.
"It was horrible!" he cried in a shrill and toneless voice, shrinking away from
Trebonius. "I've never seen anything so frightening in my life. Forgive me, oh
mighty Caesar!"
"What have you done?" asked Caesar.
"I, I took the ball from the pond and looked at it," stammered the coolie. "And
I saw things that frightened me. And I wanted to go away, but I couldn't. And then
he looked at me."
"What did you see? What did you say?" demanded Caesar, now fully aware of the
object's power.
The coolie shut his eyes and shivered, but said nothing. They all stared at him
in silence.
"Speak, you wretch!" exclaimed Darius, his face hard and stern.
In a low hesitating voice, the coolie began again, and slowly his words grew
clearer and stronger. "I saw a massive brick oven with a roaring flame," he said.
"And a massive paddle. It seemed far away and long ago, yet hard and clear. There
were large pizzas cooking within the oven and on the many tables nearby. Then he
came. He did not speak so that I could hear words. He just looked and I understood.
He was eating large quantities of pizza and pies covered the large table where he was
seated. He continued eating the pizza. His hands.... I never saw such large hands.
They were big and clutched large slices of pizza. I've never seen anyone eat so
much. Pizza after pizza, he was devouring them all."
"Mad Max!" gasped Caesar and his lieutenants as one voice.
"Then suddenly he seemed to see me, and he laughed at me," babbled the visibly
terrified coolie. "It was cruel. It was like being slashed with pizza cutters. I
struggled. But he said: 'Wait a moment! Tell Caesar that there is no pizza left for
him! The brick ovens are mine and mine alone!'"
Caesar fumed with anger. "So he consumed everything? All of the pizza? That
heavy handed scoundrel!"
Trebonius motioned to one of his foremen. "Quickly, summon our chariots! We
must return to Arvat with all due haste! Now, quickly you fool!"
"Sire, you do realize that we will not be able to make it in time," stated
Darius. "Mad Max will have eaten all of the pies by the time we make it to Arvat!
It is a Mad Max take over of the Arvat pizza industry!"
"What of this wretched coolie?" asked Trebonius. "What shall we do with him?"
"Look at him," said Caesar, motioning to the clearly deranged coolie. "He has
lost his faculties. He has viewed a terribly frightening sight and will likely
remain mad for the remainder of his years. Spare his life, for he as looked into the
Palantir and viewed the heavy handed one dining in action. Something few mortals
could behold and retain their sanity....
The chariots arrived and the men hastily departed the area. Caesar covered the
Palantir with cloth and stowed it on the vehicle. This must not fall into the hands
of mortals again....
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hail Arvat! I, your new Duelmaster, Bill Berith, salute you!!
I'm not surprised that I have made it to the top of the heap, however I have
impressed myself with the swiftness that I have achieved the title. I am the 28th
warrior from Devil Advocates to hold the title of Duelmaster in Arvat, latest in a
long line of glory.
My challenges will go to my alliance mate Sextus, per his request for a title match.
We both have similar fight experience and it promises to be an excellent battle. Win
or lose, it should prove to be very entertaining for the masses. Speaking of the
masses, has anyone else noticed the recent influx of coolies and laborers to the
city? At least the crowds at the fights are impressive, even if they do add to the
stench of the city.
My manager requested that I mention and welcome several new teams to the arena and
that I ask for you all to introduce yourselves: Welcome -- Aaaauugh Hammerz, Shadow
Rangers, Classic Slayer and Pentad. Welcome back also to Big Lake Nomads. The sands
have seldom been so populated here in Arvat. Hopefully, we will continue to expand.

SPY REPORT
Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out ARVAT to see
what's new. Too bad, DEVIL ADVOCATES, but BARN OF HORRORS was just too good to be
stopped. I couldn't believe it. Did THE REPUBLIC really go up by 11? If only those
guys didn't have so may missing teeth... Gross! What was the name of that team who
got 3-1-1 this turn for a total 44-31-8 you ask? (Sure) CAESAR'S THUGS' their name,
and fighting's their game! I just can't say enough good things about ERRATA. They
went 3-0-1 their first time, don't slouch, and they've got good oral hygiene! MVP
award for SERVIUS? CAESAR'S THUGS' proud of him after beating LARS and getting 23
points. Talk about yer major upsets! LARS' match with SERVIUS cost him a loss of 20
points! Like, SEXTUS must be pretty gutsy! He challenged the Duelmaster from DEVIL
ADVOCATES. Does this guy have a death wish or what! This Duelmaster is like
something else! BILL BERITH stopped SEXTUS dead in his tracks! I hear the top team
insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for
PR photos.
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. NOTORIOUS was
ARVAT's most avoided team. Is there some award for that? I don't know what ROMAN
HEROES' been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from
NOTORIOUS, that's fer sher. Like, is HERON popular, or what? He was challenged the
most in all of ARVAT! He's got a 15-33-1, is that good? See if I ever talk to THE
ENERVATOR again! SHAI HALUD was so low when He challenged he. Hhmph! THE ENERVATOR
beat SHAI HALUD. No surprise about that. Really I'm not surprised THE ENERVATOR
would do such a scummy thing, either. For sure, I was holding my breath when I found
out STAINED CLASS challenged LUCIUS. After all, haven't CALL THE PRIEST and ROMAN
HEROES had a long standing duel in ARVAT? It wasn't a spectacular fight, or
anything, but LUCIUS wants me to write about it since he bested STAINED CLASS.
Satisfied? COMMODUS must not be a good enough fighter to get in fair fights. He
challenged VELMA. 11 is a big difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I
thought COMMODUS showed great skill and promise when he won victory over VELMA. All
right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. BILL BERITH of DEVIL ADVOCATES wasn't
planning on killing SEXTUS, I bet. Now he has to worry about being Bloodfeuded, and
getting put on lists... I was SO depressed when I heard MAUD'DIB got killed. He was
just a kid, and didn't get a fair chance in ARVAT, or anything! That was so totally
rude when BILL BERITH wasted SEXTUS. I think all you warriors in ARVAT should gang
up on DEVIL ADVOCATES! Like was that some Bloodfeud, or what? (BLUNDERER HAMMER vs.
VOLUMNIUS, that is.) MAXIMUS bloodfeuded (is that a word?) APOLLONIUS for revenge
over some guy's bad fortune. Was it really worth it? Fight, fight, fight. Is that
all you guys can do?
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I gotta leave. ARVAT is like such a dump, and you guys smell

You see young padawan, the simplest techniques are always best. By merely offering
to throw a single silver into the stand when each of Jorja's warrior took the sands,
we were able to influence her warriors and, hence, our wagers. Now, next time we
will look at some of the more sinister methods which involve babies, leather,

it. The swiftness of her demise showed me that there was less potential there than I
had hoped. For those stat nuts, she was a ST 12-6-12-13-17-15-9. Good damage and
poor endurance, no blessings that I could discern, likely -2 in Init. Now she can
wear all the daisy dukes she wants. -- MB
