                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

The sky over the Arvat Coliseum was streaked with crimson and scarlet as the
setting sun gave way over the horizon in a burst of glory. The sounds of weapons
clashing and trainers shouting encouragement ran out amidst scattered applause. And
the Duelmaster of the city looked out over the bustling streets below.
Madness was annoyed. The arena participation had been dropping, the number of
fights had been dwindling, and as a result the audience attendance had been
decreasing. Other entertainment such as the new golf course, chariot racing, and
even bear baiting had been growing in popularity. Of course, this had happened
before and Arvat had rebounded nicely. Also, there were other arenas in much worse
shape than what Arvat now faced. But it was an annoying factor to be considered.
If there was no quality competition to be faced, how could Madness be considered
one of Arvat's all-time greatest gladiators? True, he went 7-3-1 in the most recent
Adepts tournament, a notable feat. And he was a tournament victor in the rookies
tournament a while back. Unfortunately, a gladiator was linked to the names he faced
in the arena, and all he had to boast of was a number of victories over the faceless
hordes of Artemidorii. There was no defining moment to his career. No ultimate foe.
No brilliant matchups to set the crowd ablaze with anticipation.
What could be done about this? Very little, Madness reasoned. Very little
indeed. Recently his teammate Panic had crushed a Black Orc in the Dark Arena and
there had been a bit of a stir, but many a Duelmaster had conquered the Dark Arena.
It was no great feat. But perhaps something along that line.... Perhaps if they
were to bring in a Giant from the Eastern swamps? Perhaps a dragon from the gold his
or even a sand worm from the far deserts. THAT would be something to see.
Madness rose and shouted for his attendants. "Open the coffers! Find the most
savage beast for sale in all Alastari! I wish a contest to stun the masses and
terrify the faint of heart!"
The servitors scattered and checked the arena's gold reserves. Combined with
Madness's personal wealth, the sum was considerable. The Duelmaster wanted a show.
And a show he would have!

                                      SPY REPORT

Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! ANGELS OF PAIN had cause to celebrate, after
MADNESS got 17 points by beating EAST TO WEST. A certain someone should cut down on
the drinking and practice more, after losing 12 points to MADNESS. (Discrete enough,
EAST TO WEST?) Like a flirtacious debutante, ARVAT's Duelmaster ANDRONICUS found
himself the man of the hour, being "invited to dance" 2 times! In ARVAT, nothing is
permanent (except Death), and we find ourselves a new Duelmaster, AGONY. Word has it
one team in ARVAT is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death.
I'll bet it works.
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Perhaps the warriors of DEVIL
ADVOCATES should take up some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... As a
woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of ANGELS OF PAIN, so did that sorry
team shy from DEVIL ADVOCATES
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Like a tattered, worn-out, faded, out-of-fashion garment cast out to rot,
PANIC of ANGELS OF PAIN has been summarily sent to the Dark Arena. Charity is
unknown in ARVAT, and rightly so. DEVIL ADVOCATES exacted their revenge against THE
REPUBLIC. Questions are being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in
the arena. A certain tavern in ARVAT would I avoid!
All good things must come to an end. My fingers tire and I fear my incessant
prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable character. Like a mixed
metaphor, and an overtaxed simile, I now bid ARVAT farewell-- Novgorodny Vir

You once thought of me,
As a white knight on a steed.
Now you know how happy I can be...

It's true. I'm gone. I've punched my ticket to Immortality and I'm off to the Isle.
I know a lot of you are wondering what it is about me that has made me so successful.
I wish I knew for sure. I think it has more to do with intangibles (knack) than it
does with design, bonuses and favorites. I'll let you decide.

Daydream Believer (PR) 17-14-4-17-7-8-17 Poor Endurance--Good Damage
I -- 8 (+1) R -- 13 A -- 14 (+4) P -- 14 (+4) Df - 8 Dc - 6 (+3)

I know what you're thinking, "WTF, that guy looks like a 98 lb weakling!" Sigh...I
prefer to think my physical characteristics are ideally suited for a finesse style.
As for my bases, I know they aren't much to look at. After all, I am a PR. I'm
fortunate to be blessed where I need it the most--attack and parry.

Okay, so I've got nice bases with bonuses in the right spots. What about favorites?
Did I know them in advance or did I change them? The answer is no, I had no idea
what they were for sure until I recieved my graduation announcement. I would be
happy to tell you what my favorites are but I don't think my clone, Jumpinjack Flash,
would be very happy with me if I did. Let's just say that from the moment I stepped
on the sands as a Rookie I used the same strategy in EVERY fight. The only thing I
ever changed was armor (early on vs. TP's) and attack/defend locations. That should
give those of you who have faced me more than once something to think about.

You may be interested to know that I am all natural. I haven't had a prize of any
type used on me. I'm a freak of nature. It just goes to show you never know when a
guy like me will walk into your guildhouse looking for work as a gladiator. It's up
to you to spot the potential and nuture it along.

I'm going to list my tourney results and records versus each style. It isn't meant
to be a brag--I just thought you might find it interesting and a lot easier than
looking it up yourself. Enjoy!
Tourneys: Rookies: 15-1-3 TC. Initiates: 15-3-3 TV. Adepts: 16-2 TC.
Champs: 13-1-1 TC. Rookies--Champs record: 59-7-7 (.894) Challengers: 9-3 TV.
Challengers: 15-1-1 TC.

Challengers: 13-3 TV -- Runner-up (Marv-AB) Challengers: 13-3 TV -- Runner-up
(Teevella-LU) Challengers: 7-3 Challengers: 11-3-2 TV Challengers: 11-3-1 TV
 Challengers: 13-3 TV -- Runner-up (Marv-AB)

Challengers: 12-3 TV. Challengers record: 104-25-4 (.806). Career Tourney record:
163-32-11 (.836) TC's: 4 TVs: 8 (3 Runner-ups) Arena record: 5-0-1 Grudge
matches: 3-0

Total record: 171-32-12 (.842) Tourney record vs all styles: AB: 7-11 BA: 6-0-1
LU: 46-9-4 PL: 5-1-1 PR: 2-0 PS: --- SL: 9-2 ST: 51-5-2 TP: 35-4-3 WS: 2-0

As you can see, the only style I had trouble with is the ABs. I think that has more
to do with which ABs I fought rather than the style as a whole. I was 3-1 vs ABs
early on (Rookies-Champs) and 4-10 in Challengers. I was 1-5 vs Marv, 0-1 vs Marv Jr
and 0-3 vs Soulsnare. I am going to make an educated guess and assume they all had
skills or prizes added to them to make them competetive at the Challenger level where
so few ABs are. I could be wrong, though I doubt it.

See you on the Isle,
    Daydream Believer
