     Agony was especially cranky.
The morning was beautiful, with crystal skies and a pleasant, cool breeze, but
still the Duelmaster was all thunderstorms and venom. He had sent out his notices to
request assistance for the battle with the dragon, but the clerks from the Commission
had apparently forgotten to post them.
And with no notices posted, he wasn't likely to get any help for his battle with
the giant reptile. All the while, the displeasure of the audience was growing with
each passing game cycle.
To make matters worse, he was off to the tournament next cycle and the dragon
would still have to wait. This also meant he would be giving up his crown. Which
made matters all the worse.
     It was a miserable day.
Rankling, he picked up quill and ink to send a message to the GC...

          ******************************************************************

[These are the notices which were not printed with last turn's newsletter. We blame
the Dragon. -- The GC
P.S. Seriously, we apologize for not getting this in last turn. -- The GC]

"What in the Hells am I supposed to do with a Dragon?" Agony thought to himself
as he gazed down into the holding pit below.
A huge, enraged red dragon the size of an elephant snapped savagely at one of
the arena handlers, only to be stopped in mid-lunge by the six-inch thick chain
wrapped around its tree-trunk neck.
"At least it doesn't breathe fire. That would be even worse. Curse that
Madness for buying a stinking dragon and posting fliers all over town announcing that
the Duelmaster would be fighting a dragon."
Of course, that's exactly what the former Duelmaster had done. And then he
promptly had his rear end booted from the throne by Andronicus. By the time the
dragon arrived, for the princely sum of 4200 gold ducats, Agony had knocked off
Andronicus and assumed the throne himself. All's well and good, but now the crowds
were screaming for him to fight the beast as the main event of the next arena games.
And that was simply suicide. What was Madness thinking? Or not thinking? The
Dragon was huge and savage. Already it had mauled three animal handlers and one
arena-goer who got too close. It had thick scales, sharp fangs, and the disposition
of, well, a dragon. Maybe ten men together could take it out...
"Hmmm... Maybe if we get some volunteers together to try to beat the dragon.
That way the audience gets its spectacle and the entire arena population of ladiators
doesn't get wiped out. I'll post a proclamation..."

                                       POSTED!

The Duelmaster of the Arvat Arena is seeking ten brave-hearted souls interested in a
brawl against the fiercest dragon in all Alastari! Survivors will be paid 500 gold
ducats. Experienced soldiers, gladiators and skilled fighters are encouraged to
reply!

The Caesar Chronicles: Observations from the Pinnacle of Greatness
A Day in the Life of an Arvat Legend...

The sprawling project along the Urt River had been stalled and the massive
coolie housing project had experienced a shortage of funding. The Arvat Riverfront
tract, purchased by Caesar Industries LLC during the economic real estate bubble, was
only partially constructed, as buildings were framed, yet not completed. The massive
commercial real estate investment trust that helped fund the project was experiencing
significant headwinds as the volatile Arvat Stock Exchange limped along, where most
securities experienced an average 50-75 percent plunge when the equities bubble burst
in 3Q08. A free falling consumer housing market built on over-leveraging had yet to
play out and the next catastrophe looming was commercial real estate.
The Arvat Treasury was frantically scrambling to reassure foreign governments as
far as away as Rocanis that Arvat would meet its current obligations and that
continuing to purchase Arvat Treasury Bonds was wise and profitable for them.
However, these foreign city-states were beginning to ask Arvat to tone down the
deficit spending and get their financial house in order. The bail outs and pork
laden stimulus launched by the Arvat Council had failed to produce anything of
relevance to the average citizen. Thousands remained unemployed and the city guard
feared the potential for a coolie uprising as large numbers of laborers had been
lured into the city from economically depressed Zuwayza to work on the various
construction projects that were springing up all over during those high speed,
economic good times. Now, with unemployment nearing 25%, the Arvat City Council was
running out of silver arrows in their "magic" quiver. Rumors of a second economic
stimulus package reverberated throughout the lavish halls and opulent facilities of
Arvat's detached, selfish and arrogant politicians. They remained safe, with the
finest benefits and accommodations, surrounded by their security forces and truly
either unaware or unsympathetic to the needs of the average Arvat taxpayer.
Long gone were the scenes depicting large tracts of forest being hacked down and
burned by large coolie work gangs bearing axes and saws. No longer did the piles of
flotsam and jetsam drift down the river to wreak havoc on the shipping lanes of
Chimlevtal. No longer were huge areas of wetlands under fire, torched and cleared by
coolie work gangs. No longer did massive alligators and giant river pike prey on
unsuspecting coolies working on the project. The shrill screams of terror that once
echoed throughout the Arvat afternoon had been silenced. For the builders, economic
doom had struck.
For the wealthy corporations deemed systemically too big to fail and the
rickshaw manufacturing industry dominated by corrupt unions and incompetent
management teams, life continued in the wake of their bail outs. They had somehow
weathered the massive storm that, ironically, was of their own doing and caused so
much damage in its wake. Roman Pillars Bank & Trust, Roman Rickshaws Corporation and
other large businesses had received their funds under the bail out formulas crafted
by biased politicians, central bankers, regulators and business leaders behind closed
doors.
The giant Caesar Industries, LLC construction headquarters no longer teemed with
Roman engineers pouring over scrolls and blueprints of the site. They had been laid
off as part of a corporate restructure. The commercial real estate market loomed on
the brink of collapse. A saddled Arvat government was waking up to the cold hard
facts that spending their way out of this mess was not really working and very
shortsighted. With record borrowing, apprehension over treasury bond auctions,
potential coolie unrest and threats gathering from rogue city-states and radical
groups, Arvat teetered on the brink of disaster.
In the Central Coliseum District, Caesar and his lieutenants stared out the
giant penthouse window at the view of Arvat, the Urt River and delta as a backdrop.
The riverfront project loomed in the distance as the three men smoked their Partagas
and sipped port wine from Caesar Estates Vineyards, located on the outskirts of the
city and in Arvat wine country. They sat within one of the many ornate rooms of the
Roman Guildhouse, a massive multi-storied structure situated in the heart of Arvat.
Nearby, other elaborate facilities belonging to the Dark One, Mad Max, Zalgor Prigg
and others lined the perfectly manicured avenues of the district.
Darius reclined in a giant leather chair, its seams lined with brass tacks.
"Sire, what if these idiot politicians can no longer peddle treasury bonds to pay for
all of this spending?"
"I've thought of this, Darius." stated Caesar. "We must find a way to further
profit from this morass."
"The bail outs have been a boon for our businesses." chimed in Trebonius the
Magnificent. "And when we reorganize Roman Rickshaws Corporation under bankruptcy
terms, we can break the back of the Rickshaw Coolies of the World Union."
"Splendid!" exclaimed Caesar. "There is nothing worse than coolies organizing
and demanding a better standard of life. And at our expense! How dare they!"
All three men exploded in laughter.
"We need to revitalize the Riverfront Project." stated Caesar. "How do we get
our hands on more stimulus money?"
"Public Works!" exclaimed Trebonius, suddenly. "That is how we do it! We
reorganize our permits and get the city to fund public works projects. We never did
intend to add running water or sewage to the coolie housing project, so we get the
city to fund it."
"Meanwhile, we skim off the funds and convince our corrupt politicians to throw
some pork on our plate!" interrupted Darius the Great. "We get tax dollars to fund
the project!"
"This will also quell any fears of a coolie uprising." stated Caesar, deep in
thought as he sipped the marvelous port wine. "Darius, set up a meeting with the
coolie labor chief for the project. I have a plan for him..."

                                      SPY REPORT

Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in ARVAT this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. And let's see, E. BLISS fought OCTAVIUS and gained
8 points and contributed to DEVIL ADVOCATES' 1-3-0. LOU C. FIRR has lost to
ARTEMIDORUS V, falling 3 points, while helping make DEVIL ADVOCATES a 1-3-0 turn.
Due to his absence and inability to defend the throne, AGONY has lost the title of
Duelmaster. We should ask ARTEMIDORUS IV about the thrill of victory, and what being
the new Duelmaster does for a warrior, he's now the one to ask. By the way, was that
our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The Swinging
Aardvark?
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one. CHRISTIAN ROCK has cause to stand tall,
as they were ARVAT's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to
beat. And avoiding CHRISTIAN ROCK more than any other team we find DEVIL ADVOCATES.
ARVAT, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing?
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. We'd like to remind certain teams
not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered
rude.
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in ARVAT and I've a long road ahead of me.
Happy Trails. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to paper-- Alarond the Scribe

Gladitorial Commission -- Dang it all! You guys missed my column last turn which
really throws my plans out of whack! Please print it this week! In the meantime I
have to feed some of your clerks to the dragon to keep the audience entertained! --
Duelmaster Agony

Agony -- You have my apologies, I missed the column when I was getting things
ready to run. I caught it afterwards, but that's still late. -- NAIEI

Tiberius -- Welcome to the sands. I was impressed when I saw you coming down the
runway and expected a beating. Fortunately my manager says I'm "lucky." Certainly
that rating you saw me get was a longshot at the end of the week! Ain't ya jealous?
-- Envy

Caesar -- Having trouble with your e-mail? My last few have not received responses.
Hope all is well. -- the Dark One
