                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Agony rose from the sand and shook his head. A shower of dirt sprayed out from
him and clattered on his shield. What had just happened? The last thing he
remembered was talking to one of the Roman Heroes in his office in the arena, and now
he was on the sands, and from the actions of East to West who stood nearby, arms
raised, saluting the cheering crowd, he had LOST.
Where had the last week gone? And how the heck had he lost? He had defeated
East to West multiple times and had no weakness in his strategy.
Agony staggered from the sands and into the gladiators' baths. He submerged in
a pool of geyser heated water and pondered the missing week. Concentrating, some
shadowy memories returned to him. He recalled something about the accursed sword and
also something about spending hours watching the Duke's summer residence. Why was he
doing that? He also remembered a conversation with one of the Duke's guards. Was he
bribing the man? And what for? It made no sense.
Agony scratched his head and noticed copious amounds of blood on his fingers.
He must have taken a blow to the head in the East to West fight. He rinsed his scalp
and watched the blood spread out in the pool. The blow was either making him forget
the past week or perhaps it knocked him back to his senses. He wasn't sure which.
The loss wasn't a major deal. Agony was going to be held out after this fight
for the tournament anyway. After three consecutive 7-3 showings, the Dark One
apparently felt he was due for an even better run in the Champions class. But he
needed to get his wits about him and figure out what was going on.
As he pondered, his teammate, Lou C. Firr entered the baths, fresh from a
victory and his first stint in the Challenger Champions class.
Lou nodded at Agony. "Tough loss, Agony. You had him until he started the
weird open hand aimed blow dodging..."
Agony grunted. He didn't really remember that at all, but it made some sense.
If East to West was in dodging mode, he coudl easily pull a dodge/riposte maneuver
and that's where the shot to the head came from.
Lou continued, "Too bad you told the boss to cancel your slot on the tourney
team as well. I know he was counting on you to do well."
Agony's head snapped up. "What? I told him WHAT?!"
"You told him some of your old injuries were acting up and you wouldn't be able
to fight well. I guess him seeing your loss this week will justify it." Lou picked
up his towel and headed back to the locker room.
This was even worse than he thought. Something very strange was going on.
Suddenly Agony's thoughts turned to the strange magical sword he had been wielding as
of late. Where was it? It had been glued to his hand and then it started...
talking.
The memories flooded back to him. The sword made him kill the Roman gladiator.
The sword had him stalking the Duke, looking for ways to kill him. The sword made
him back out of the tournament lineup to stay behind in Arvat. But where was it now?
Clearly the blow to the head snapped him out of some kind hypnotic trance. The
sword gave him commands and was now moving on to some new stage in its plan to kill
the Duke and take over the city. It expected him to do its bidding and then come
back to it where he left it...
In the drainage tunnel leading to the cellar of the Duke's manor! He had bribed
the guard to unlock the drainage grate. The sword had been afraid that with all of
the wizards attending this week's pre-tournament games at the arena one of them might
detect it and try to counteract its plans. So it had commanded agony to leave it
behind and return after the games to assassinate the Duke.
And it was expecting him to return soon.

                                      SPY REPORT

So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. Hey everybody, watch out for LOU C. FIRR, who
flew up 12 points in the rankings after mashing PETER PIQUIN like a melon. Keep your
eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. PETER
PIQUIN was defeated by LOU C. FIRR and drops 7 points. Well, if ya don't shows up at
the laundromat, ya can'ts wash yer clothes. EAST TO WEST did not fight this week so
his title was forfeit. It's a proud day for the ROMAN HEROES stable, as their
warrior, MARCELLUS, ascended the Duelmaster's throne. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed
protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location.
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ARVAT arena. And hey,
kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid DEVIL ADVOCATES, please raise you hand. Wow.
Does ARVAT really have that many liars? Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch
ANGELS OF PAIN's act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running
from DEVIL ADVOCATES. And who is this HERON you ask, with 95 points and a 17-43-1
record. Ooh, the tales I could tell! Getting lots of flowers from sympathetic fans
was SARLOW, who was successfully challenged by ARTEMIDORUS V who had a mere 18 points
more than SARLOW. Definition of petty: ARTEMIDORUS V subdued SARLOW, a mismatch of
18 points. OCTAVIUS of ROMAN HEROES had better have a good reason for challenging
down 14 points in a challenge which he won. I thought OCTAVIUS showed great skill
and promise when he beat CUTLER BATES. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Ask not the elves for counsel, for they
will say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh?
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some tracks. Hasta la
bye-bye. (Loud choruses of 'Beat it, ya bum!')-- The Unknown Spymaster
