TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Agony finished penning his note to the Duke of Arvat shortly after leaving the
community baths in the arena. The message was brief, but to the point, warning that
he, former Duelmaster and respected gladiator, was being compelled to attempt an
assassination. He explained the circumstances behind how he came to possess the
cursed sword and how the sword had taken over his mind and was compelling him to do
things he didn't want to do. Another shorter message was sent to the Drak One, his
arena manager and well known wizard of the First Order.
Between the notes, he hoped, someone would be able to come to his assistance.
Even taking such a short amount of time to write notes had been difficult. The
compulsion that the sword used to control him was strong and even though it was
broken by a blow to his head in his duel, it was returning. He found himself out on
the street and heading back to the drainage culvert where he had left the sword. By
the time he arrived at the Ducal manor, he was enthralled once again and back under
control of the sword. Only a small, defiant corner of his mind recalled writing the
notes at all.
Agony crouched in the muck of the culvert and drew the sword forth. It glowed
suddenly, shedding the filth from it with a mystical burst. The sword began to speak
in his mind.
'I have heard that the Duke will be entertaining this evening. Apparently there
is an annual charity ball being held. We will enter while security is busy searching
guests and preparing arrangements. Forward, my host.'
Slowly, Agony made his way along the culvert to the ancient iron gate that
barred access to the cistern in the Duke's cellars. The lock had been removed by a
bribed guard, but the rusty grate moved only reluctantly. Agony opened it slowly to
avoid the screech of encrusted hinges. The tunnel widened at the point and gave
Agony access to one of the great water storage cisterns which provided fresh water to
the whole town in days gone past. The stone cistern was fifty feet tall and lined
with a waterproof cement, but it was cracked and dry. With modern wells available it
was no longer needed and at this point was forgotten by the inhabitants of the manor.
Fortunately the sword had been around for centuries and knew the route well.
Agony climbed up the access ladder to the sub-basement, one floor below the wine
cellar of manor. All sorts of weapons and unneeded furniture lined the sub-basement
and were in various states of disrepair. From the dust and grime of the place, no
one had been on that level in some time. Months at the very least and likely years
had passed since the last visit. Showing caution, Agony tried to keep to the smaller
side corridors. His tracks in the dust would be easy for any guard to follow if they
should, for some reason, choose to sweep the level. The sword led him to a narrow,
winding staircase that led up to the wine cellar and past to the pantry of the manor.
It also was unused and perhaps forgotten. The stairway was most likely a relic
from the times when kitchen staff needed to haul tubs of water up from the great
cistern, and again, with modern plumbing, this access was irrelevant. At the top of
the stairs Agony forced open a locked access door, snapping its age-worn bolt with
steady pressure. The door swung open with a slight squeak and he went on, moving
into the large dry pantry.
This area was certainly well used. Barrels of flour, crates of grains and bins
of dried goods lined the walls. Smoked sausages, meats and fishes hung from hooks on
the ceiling and small cages of dried fruits and vegetables hung from overhead racks.
Nearby a kitchen cat stalked one of the mice that infested the pantry.
Agony moved through the pantry and into what was apparently a changing area for
the kitchen staff. Swiftly he removed his muddy tunic and hose and donned a white
kitchen smock and cap. With the white mask in place he would be virtually
unrecognizable as he moved about the area. The sword was pleased. Perhaps he could
gain access to the public areas of the manor disgused as a servant and then kill the
Duke before anyone was the wiser. Agony might be able to escape in the ensuing
havoc, but that was secondary.
The Duke had to die.

SPY REPORT
Hail ARVAT! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your
deeds. And let's see, ABBIE DONN fought HERON and gained 9 points and contributed to
DEVIL ADVOCATES' 3-2-0. BILL P. GORE has lost to CAPTURED ORC, falling 11 points,
while helping make DEVIL ADVOCATES a 3-2-0 turn. This week's Duelmaster bout was
between STONE GOLEM and our Duelmaster MARCELLUS, making a Dark Arena Challenge. The
crowds were amazed this turn, as STONE GOLEM killed the Duelmaster, MARCELLUS,
leaving ROMAN HEROES in mourning. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the
top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Welcome Wench until they win.
Maybe?
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. ROMAN HEROES has cause to stand tall, as they were ARVAT's
most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who
avoided ROMAN HEROES stable the most? Believe it or not, it was DEVIL ADVOCATES.
Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that FILLIS BOUY from FISHERMAN'S
WHARF was ARVAT's most challenged warrior this turn. Well now, what do you expect
when someone like ARTEMIDORUS V from ROMAN HEROES challenges down 24 points to fight
PETER PIQUIN of FISHERMAN'S WHARF? It pains me to see warriors take advantage of the
system like this. ARTEMIDORUS V won victory over PETER PIQUIN, as if it surprises
anyone.
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies.
You know who you are; and it's considered rude.
I like this place, ARVAT, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? Well, I'm burning daylight here in ARVAT and I've a long
road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in ARVAT again, farewell--
Alarond the Scribe

Heron -- Wow. You're the first man I've met who's called me beautiful. At 6'8" I've
been called "giraffe," "stretch," and "stilts," but no one ever called me beautiful.
Thanks so much! -- Abbie Donn
Marcellus and Heron -- Congrats on the invitations to the Isle. Well done! --
Angels/Devils
Peter Piquin -- Thanks for the win. I'm up to 20-21 now. Just one more win to get
back to 50%. Gotta do it! -- Lou
Abbie Donn -- Aha! You're a son of a gun, or maybe a daughter of a gun, I guess, but
what the heck, I'm OUT of here. Life is good. -- Heron
P.S. I hope you will consent to come fishing with me. I know it's a little early
for ice fishing, but we could practice. The keeping warm is the most important part.
Artemidorus V -- I gotta say I expected you sooner or later. All you youngsters are
eager to learn from me, I know. -- Sarlow
P.S. Of course, some are too dumb to learn.
Octavius -- Hmm, I didn't realize there were elves in Rome. I guess it figures,
dark, oily, and sly, what else could you be? -- Cutler Bates
Lou C. Firr -- Well, punch me with a pickerel or something. I liked being retired a
lot better than being active. -- Peter Piquin

P.S. Although I'm going to have to find someone to replace Heron, and that isn't
anyone's fault but mine. I should have designed him less effectively or something.
Oh, well.
Our congratulations to Marcellus. -- Jorja and the Fisherman's Wharf crew
