Arvat, the Ducal Manor:

As Agony waited in the shadows of a storage closet in the kitchen of the Ducal
Manor of Arvat, garbed in servant's clothing and tense with the anticipation of
assassinating the Duke himself, he became aware that the sword had dropped its focus
on him and was silently communicating with someone else. With the focus off of him,
Agony regained some of his own will and began to eavesdrop on the sword.
Apparently it was telepathically communicating with an ally or other servant,
and he was unable to hear the other part of the conversation, only what the sword was
sending.
'Unleash the undead now.' The sword demanded of its unknown partner. 'We will
need a diversion and the nearness of the Underworld at this time of year makes it
that much easier. Your minions must rampage through the city of Arvat and keep any
assistance from coming to the Duke's aid. It is not necessary that they take the
town, just that they keep anyone else from storming the manor. As it is there will
be a number of the arena managers here as well as armed servitors of the Duke
himself.'
The sword paused while it obviously received a telepathic response, then
continued. 'Yes. I have made arrangements for the Dark One to be absent from the
Duke's Ball, so there will be none here with magical aptitude, yet many others will
be here including Caesar and his retinue, all skilled warriors, and Zalgor should be
here as well. They will be enough for me to handle. Also it is apparent that the
fool of a Duke is romantically engaged with the Arenamistress. I must be prepared to
counter her interference as well. Very well. When next we meet, your realm of death
shall have gained a foothold here in the material world.'
Agony was shocked. The sword was speaking with either Ahringol, the God of
Death, or one of his close minions. He had not been told anything about this from
the sword before. Everything was about killing the Duke. But then why would the
sword worry about filling him in on its plans? He was but a pawn to it. Expendable.
Obviously it had greater designs. Then all thoughts of the sword and its plans were
wiped away as the sword reasserted its control over the former Duelmaster.

Isle of the Eye, Free Blades Arena Headquarters:

Defiance paced back and forth. He had assembled a small group of fellow
guildmates and was waiting for word from Tortured Trout, the guild wizard, about his
progress in contacting the Dark One. In addition to the fishy one, he had two
skilled fighters and arena veterans with him - D. Moe Gorgon and Levi A. Thon. Both
were deadly warriors, if not all that bright.
In the past day much had been revealed to Defiance. The sword which was the
symbol of the Lord Marshall of Free Blades, El Cid, had warned him that an equally
powerful blade, called the Sword of the Underworld, had been unearthed and was
currently active in the city of Arvat. Why or how, Defiance did not know. He was
only sure that the sword needed to be stopped, and he was best equipped to stop it,
with El Cid in hand.
The double doors to the conference room flew open and Tortured Trout stalked in.
'I have been unable to reach the Dark One for instructions. He is on another plane
of existence at this time and I don't have the power to break through the veil to
contact him. We are on our own.'
Defiance expected as much. 'Very well, it's up to the four of us. Can you
teleport us to Arvat? As close as possible to the Sword of the Underword without it
being able to detect us? We can then try to determine what it's up to and stop it as
quickly as we can.'
Tortured Trout nodded. 'Gather around me.'
With a flash of light and the smell of brimstone, they were gone.

Arvat, Devil Advocates Guildhouse:

Lou C. Firr and Abbie Donn were arm wrestling in the dining hall of the Devil
Advocates guildhouse. The two had tied for the top spot in the arena based on
recognition points and neither of them was granted the title of Duelmaster. And
neither of them was willing to cede their claim.
Lou had been in the arena for a long, long time. His 21-21 record was built
over nearly two years fighting in Arvat. He wanted more than anything else to hold
the title before he either died or graduated. Anyone who got in his way would be
rolled over.
Abbie was a physical specimen, extremely tall for a woman, towering at 6'8" in
her stocking feet; she had always been called a freak or insulted endlessly in her
youth. Before she had been recruited by the guild she had expected to have a career
lighting streetlamps or some other equally ignoble destiny. She was passionate about
her dueling and was never willing to give an inch.
As the two strained and struggled to gain the advantage in the arm wrestling,
junior guild member Lil Ethe rushed in, wearing her plate armor and brandishing a war
flail. They homely young girl had a look of panic on her face.
'The streets are full of zombies! They just smashed down the front gate and
seized Forim, the butler. They ripped him into pieces and are eating him!' Lil
looked like she was going to pass out.
Lou and Abbie glanced at each other for a moment and leaped up.
'To arms! To arms!' Lou bellowed, running for his equipment locker while Abbie
snatched up her scimitar and shouted, 'Guildmates! To me! Intruders in the Guild!'
From all corners of the ancient tower answering shouts rang out as the guild
prepared to do battle.

Arvat, Grisly Lion Inn:

Hobar the Miller was a good man. He worked every day at his mill in the sleepy
town of Arvat. Milling was hard work. He bought the wheat, set the milling wheel
and ground the meal. He then sold the meal and transported it to seven different
bakers throughout the city. He maintained his own equipment, tended his wagon and
mules and essentially completed every other task in the mill.
All he asked was that he be allowed to stop at the Grisly Lion on his way home
and have the chance to enjoy one tankard of ale. It was all he asked.
But his wife, Hilgar, didn't understand. She never approved of drinking and to
her all ale was the work of Ahringol. Every night she frowned and scowled and
stomped around once he returned home, showing her disapproval.
That didn't stop Hobar, though. He still stopped at the Grisly Lion every
night.
As Hobar tipped his mug and swallowed the last of the cool, spicy ale, he heard
a disturbance outside. Probably one of the Roman coolies had blocked the road and a
cart driver was shouting at him.
Hobar rose, tipped the bartender and headed out. As he opened to door, a scene
of horror stood before him. Lumbering walking corpses in various stages of decay
were everywhere. Covered with maggots and oozing, rotting flesh, the zombies slowly,
inexorably were chasing down citizens and killing them. Worse, they were then
devouring the bodies in gory fashion!
An eerie groan drew Hobar's attention. He looked quickly to his left and saw a
zombie lunging for him. In an instant he was lifted off his feet, too shocked even
to scream. The zombie twisted and he heard his neck snap like a rotten branch.
As darkness fell, Hobar's last thoughts were, 'All I asked was one pint of
ale...'

Arvat, the Ducal Manor:

The guests had arrived. Four huge, rectangular tables filled the ball room, one
forming each side of the giant square dance floor. Servants scurried back and forth,
fetching hors d'oeuvres and glasses of sparkling wines for the rich and famous of the
city of Arvat. The Ducal Ball was the highlight of Arvat social life. Once a year
everyone who was anyone was invited to attend for a night of feasting, drinking and
dancing.
Aristocrats, the richest merchants, owners of the best gladiatorial stables in
the city and famed actors and actresses all mingled in a mass of ego and self
worship. It was always quite the spectacle.
From his closet Agony surveyed the guests and watched for the arrival of the
Duke. He always came fashionably late to his own party. Fortuitously, the Duke's
path would take him right past Agony's hiding spot, allowing him to leap forth and
strike before anyone could react.
The sword would charge him with extra strength and skill prior to the attack,
making him and almost superhuman assassin. That coupled with his already
considerable skills from the arena... Agony was certain that no one could stop him
At that moment the fanfare of trumpets announced the arrival of the Duke.
Smiling, the fellow emerged from an upstairs room and began to descend the wide,
marble stairs to the applause of his guests.
The Arenamistress Sugar was on his right, holding the Duke's arm. She was a
concern, but not overmuch. In her blue silk gown she might have several weapons
stashed away, yet surprise and the magical advantage given by the sword would allow
Agony to kill the Duke before worrying about any counterstrike.
Slowly he watched as the Duke grew near. Agony slowly eased the closet door
open and stepped from the shadows...

            + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Fisherman's Wharf ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Fishwife, a graduate of several years back, stood at the land end of the Wharf
and scowled into the fog, hands on hips and one toe tapping impatiently. The lantern
which served this part of the waterfront as a streetlight was barely visible, but she
could see something moving down that way. Something, but it looked too short to be
Sarlow. "Drat the boy! If he's late for dinner again, I will not save him so much
as a fishbone!"
"Not back yet?" Fillis Bouy came up behind her.
"No, and I won't save him so much as a fishbone! Flatten me with a flounder,
the boy is late more often than he's on time, and I've had enough of it--"
A wordless yell echoed off the warehouses that lined the waterfront here. The
fog swirled and boiled, taking on a repellant yellow-green tinge. A splashing under
the wharf, coupled with the reek of disturbed mud. Running feet on the cobbles.
Sarlow skidded into sight, eyes wide with horror and fear; he shied back from
his teammates, who had both drawn blades. "The walking dead!" he gasped.

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
ARVAT brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see PETER PIQUIN win a fight and gain 21 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk,
PETER PIQUIN beat ABBIE DONN and ABBIE DONN lost 20 points. You're breakin' my
heart. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as LOU C. FIRR takes the Title
and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. I'm not in a very good
mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you,
ARVAT?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
FISHERMAN'S WHARF, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided
team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in this mass
act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was DEVIL ADVOCATES. Ha ha ha
ha!
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ARVAT's
morgue. More variety. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate
catches up with you sooner that later?
What does the ARVAT arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this
drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. I see
the crowds are getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide Clemens

Octavius -- When you missed the channel and ran onto the mudflats, I had to laugh. --
Fillis Bouy

Lou C. Firr -- It must be the phase of the moon or something, but I could've sworn
one or the other of us would take home a bunch of skills from that. Well, it wasn't
the first time I was wrong. -- Sarlow

Abbie Donn -- On the whole, I rather like the idea of being yours. At least for a
while. What do we do first? -- Heron

Whence the Mordant Deserter? We're a long way from Mordant here. Which is probably
his point, I s'pose. -- Cutler Bates
