DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Bill P. Gore waited as the tailor finished his measurements. He probably should
have had some new clothes made before--he expected that sooner or later he would hold
the arena title and would need to be presentable in public--but somehow he didn't
want to jinx himself.
He was really in a state of disbelief. The title in Arvat, a 16-1 record and he
had even been signed to a publicity contract with a local vinyard to promote their
wines and brandies. It had been quite a month.
Bill looked back at his fight record with no small measure of pride. Amazingly
his one loss had been to a Captured Orc back in his 7th fight. He had been a bit
overconfident and took a hit early in the fight and went down in a heap. His
typically excellent defenses had failed him, just that one time. Now he was able to
beat Unbreakable, an all around solid total parry warrior who had the ability to take
a ton of damage and also had plenty of skills to back it up. Bill felt his one
weakness was his endurance, and when he heard of the matchup, he expected Unbreakable
to sponge damage and then come on strong when Bill had exhausted his strength.
In reality, Unbreakable seemed so confused by Bill's exhausted flailings and
leapings that he didn't ever get into the swing of things. Eventually Bill mustered
the strength for one last attack and Unbreakable surrendered. All in all it was a
remarkable and very satisfying win.
Of course the reality of being Duelmaster was much different than the
perception. There were endless signature sessions, press conferences, public
training displays... It was very tiring. With the Arvat economy in a downturn, the
GC was aggressively marketing the gladiators to generate additional attendance. And
it seemed to be working. The arena was quite full the last month or so.
Not quite as full as it had been during Agony's title reign and the mess with
the dragon, but it was still a packed house. Bill was trying to get the vinyard he
was sponsoring to ink a deal with the GC to have wine night at the arena, but someone
realized that getting a bunch of fans drunk on wine was a recipe for disaster.
As the tailor packed his gear, Bill prepared himself for a training session.
Nothing would be important if he lost the title. If he held it a turn or two,
perhaps he could implement some of his even better ideas...
SPY REPORT
Hail ARVAT! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your
deeds. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for
APOCALYPSE, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 4 into 7th. And let's see,
WALDEBURG fought BALLISTIC IMP and gained 22 points and contributed to DEATH BY
DESIGN's 1-4-0. BALLISTIC IMP has lost to WALDEBURG, falling 10 points, while
helping make FRIEND OR FOE? a 1-3-0 turn. Defending his title for another turn, BILL
P. GORE kept ARVAT's warrior, M. CHARDINEE, from claiming the throne. Tell me, is
nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Swinging Aardvark
uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. I also notice that the DEVIL
ADVOCATES stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on ARVAT, what are you
afraid of? And avoiding DEVIL ADVOCATES more than any other team we find ANGELS OF
PAIN. ARVAT, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports
fans, take notice that FILLIS BOUY from FISHERMAN'S WHARF was ARVAT's most challenged
warrior this turn. In a brave attempt, ENVY from ANGELS OF PAIN challenged up 22
points to fight SARLOW from the FISHERMAN'S WHARF stable. ENVY perhaps got hers just
desserts, seeing as she subdued SARLOW and ended up with 86 recognition points.
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. The Swinging Aardvark declares a
free round for LIL ETHE and all of DEVIL ADVOCATES, for having revenged DEATH BY
DESIGN's KILLER JR for killing one of their comrades. We'd like to remind certain
teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's
considered rude.
I like this place, ARVAT, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? Well, I'm burning daylight here in ARVAT and I've a long
