The coolies, a stout team clad in winter gear, worked the giant cranking mechanism, sweat coating their filthy bodies despite the bitter chill of the Green Mountains located outside Aljafir. The chairlifts, filled with beaming passengers, ascended from the base into the heavans towards the snow capped summit, shrouded in clouds and perpetual snow some 5,000 feet away. With a "heave, ho" and legendary coolie discipline, they propelled the chairs skyward into the frigid afternoon winter air. At the summit, accompanied by Trebonius the Magnificent and Augustus II, Caesar stared down the narrow, winding slope of Panic Button, an incredible black double diamond with an unforgiving vertical drop. One his favorites for years, but not for the faint of heart! Its moguls were legendary and had sent many a skier tumbling down the steep slopes towards certain pain and bone bruising doom. Yet Caesar had mastered the Panic Button many times and stared down its treacherous slope with the confidendce of an experienced skier--and perhaps a touch of madness. The afternoon wind on Skye Peak was whipping snow about and from their lofty perch, the men could see miles of forest covered mountains, coated with the white powder of winter. Caesar turned to face El Magnifico, his face covered with a partial mask and goggles. His cheeks coated with Bag Balm, a legendary local substance that prevented wind burn and exposure. "I'm getting too old for these double diamonds!" exclaimed Caesar. "Perhaps next year we should start thinking more in terms of blue and green trails." "Sire, green trails!" cried Trebonius in disbelief. "Please say it isn't so!!!" "Yes, green trails." retorted Caesar. "We're not as young as we used to be..." "But, sire." returned Trebonius, a clever smile on his face. "We're immortal, remember?" "Well I don't feel so immortal afterwards." replied Caesar. "My legs feel like bricks after these runs..." "Let's hit these moguls, gentlemen." chimed in the younger Augustus II, a rising Roman star in the Primus arena. With that, the three men seemed to leap from the mountain face as they plunged from the summit down the steep trail into the Green Mountain air. It was sunny, cold, snowy and the conditions were ideal. Every trail was open, coolies labored to keep every lift operational and the base was over fifty inches of packed powder. What could be better? Caesar wished he could winter here forever in the land of moose muffins, moguls, maple syrup and cheddar cheese... Later that day, on the service road, the three men sat at the bar sipping their Goombay Smash rum drinks, a favorite among the ski community and a feature drink at many of the local establishments. The fruit juices mixed nicely with the Goslings Black Seal and were topped off with a drizzle of Bacardi 151. Just like Mom used to make. The appetizers were half priced and the skiers dove in with the ravenous hunger that one can only muster within from a day on the slopes. "We must return to Arvat, sire." stated Trebonius. "Since the financial crisis, the bailout of Roman Pillars Bank & Trust and the collapse of the Riverfront real estate project, the Arvat economy is starting to recover. The Arvat Stock Exchange is up over 60% since the March 9th lows of 2009 and it is rumored the Dark One has profited tremendously from beaten and battered shares obtained during the crisis." "We can return to the city and make huge profits from our real estate holdings." stated Augustus II. "Our gold holdings have soared in value as people have sought the safety of precious metals as a hedge against a strong Arvat dollar and inflationary fears. Perhaps we can persuade the Arvat Central Bank to leave interest rates dangerously low so we can borrow money for specualtion into foreign city-state currencies?" "There is more money to be made, sire! We can create the mother of all dollar carry trades!" exclaimed Trebonius, raising his Goombay into the air. "A new bubble can be formed!" "We can usher in a new era of financial prosperity, widen the disparity between rich and poor and live like kings alongside our corrupt politicians!" smiled Augustus II. "The Arvat Senate will do as we wish. We have greased their wheels nicely over the years and they have passed favorable legislation that has profited big business. Our big business!" "It is funny how these politicians claim to be interested in helping the unwashed masses, but never do." chuckled Trebonius. "This culture of corruption is a perfect scenario for us." "And now that Coolie Health Care coverage has been thwarted by the Dark One's friends in the Senate, we can keep labor costs low and exploit this pool of unskilled workers as we see fit." stated Augustus II. "This sounds very appealing gentlemen." replied Caesar, deep in thought. "But hasn't that Do-Gooder Jorja also returned to the city? Will she attempt to impede our plans at ushering in a new economic bubble and era of greed?" "The Fishermen's Wharf faction can do little before the might of Rome, sire." stated a confident Trebonius. "We will crush her in the arena if she stands in our way and send her fleeing from the city with her tail between her legs." "Like we did to that Cardow Hunters group of Neanderthals in Free Blades." laughed Caesar. "I sure wish she would come back there, our boys miss them dearly." All three men burst out in laughter. The quesadillas and burritos were half price, the Goombays flowed like water and the giant fireplace in the background crackled with warmth as the sun set on the nearby slopes... Yes, the Romans were returning to Arvat, a major bastion of power for them since the ancient days of 1987, a new economic bubble and era of greed awaiting them. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 639): LIP GLOSS of HOT STUFF (Papa Bear, mgr.) Gore was in the team library at the Devil Advocates Guildhouse in the City of Arvat. The Guildhouse was one of the oldest buildings in town--an ancient defensive tower that had been abandoned by the city militia over a century ago and was completely refurbished by the team when they arrived over 20 years before. The archaic gothic style architecture led to the building being very quirky, with numerous secret passagaes and concealed doors. It was also very drafty and every room was laden with tapestries and thick rugs to keep the chill of the stone at bay. Bill was sipping a glass of port and reading an old book which went over the defensive strategy of the city in case of invasion. It was an interesting study in tactics, and Bill appreciated tactics and strategy. As he finished a chapter on siege warfare, the door opened and one of the new recruits sauntered in. The man was middle aged and very lean, wearing a black suit with a little white collar. Bill knew that he had been dragged up from one of the reality-spanning chambers that the Dark One used to "draft" talent for the arena through space and time. Also he was some sore of religious man where he came from. "Top 'o the mornin' to ye, laddie. A fine day for reading and sippin' o' the sacrement, isn't it now?" Bill nodded. "Father O'Lies, isn't it? I haven't had time to speak with you before." "Ah, no worries, laddie, I've been larnin' the ways around here. It's been quite time consumin, don't ye know. I saw ye fight last week. Well done, laddie, well done." "Thank's, uh, Father. That's a sort of strange name." "True, ye might think so. But I'm a priest, don't ye know. Or at least I was, before the hole in the sky opened and I ended up here. It's been quite the change." Bill agreed. It was definitely a change to be pulled out of the culture you'd been born to, only to be pressed into service as a gladiator. Still, there was a reason each of them was selected and it was part of their contracts that after their service in the arena they could be returned to their own dimension if they so chose. Most stayed, however. The challenge of the arena was usually incentive enough-- either that or the wealth accrued during the arena career. Father O'Lies sat down and poured himself a glass of port. "Laddie, I accidentally read some o' the mail addressed to you this fine mornin' and noticed that ye are workin' with the local distillery to sponsor an event at the arena. It occured to me that I have a wee bit of experience with the fine spirits myself, and I'd be pleased ta help ye, if I can." Bill was a bit taken aback, but the new gladiator seemed quite earnest in his desire to help. "Very well. I have a meeting with some of the management of the distillery this afternoon and the GC cross-scheduled me for a public appearance. If you would go in my place, there's not much to talk about. We just need them to agree to our final cost, as listed on this form here, and then we need to schedule a date. I have a calendar with all the available options here." Father O'Lies scooped up the paperwork and nodded. "I'd be happy ta help, laddie." As he headed out, he smiled to himself. Duelmaster or not, the fools here were as easy to dupe as they had been back home. Of course he hadn't been a priest, just a grifter with a flair for the con. He wasn't even Irish... Surpressing a chuckle, he headed off to see what opportunities for profit he might have with this agreement... SPY REPORT Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out ARVAT to see what's new. Cut this out and put it in your scrapbooks, APOCALYPSE! 'Cause they got 3-1-1 and moved up to 6th! MVP award for *CURIOUS TODDLER*? CITY ON A HILL's proud of her after beating FILLIS BOUY and getting 20 points. Talk about yer major upsets! CARNAGE's match with KUNG-FU MASTER cost him a loss of 16 points! This Duelmaster is like something else! BILL P. GORE stopped ARTEMIDORUS V dead in his tracks! Who was the wiseguy that said ARVAT's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Warty Toad? Don't look at me! Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? FRIEND OR FOE? was the most avoided team. Is a 19-26-4 record really that scary? Is there some deep dark secret why ANGELS OF PAIN's been avoiding FRIEND OR FOE? so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Like, is SARLOW popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of ARVAT! He's got a 15-46-0, is that good? What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone gets killed. Not after four more fights. Everyone has problems, but why did ANGELS OF PAIN send GLUTTONY to the Dark Arena? He had a 4-0-0, and I thought he looked neat on the sands... What a bummer! BIG MINNOW got wasted by HAMMIR! But with a 4-6-0, I guess FISHERMAN'S WHARF aren't too bummed. Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.) I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be a famous Spyreporter? I gotta leave. ARVAT is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much! Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Later, Debby Tonte DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BILL P.
