DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Bill P. Gore was enraged. He had given instructions for Father O'Lies to close
the deal with Gates of Hell distillery and expected a quick and easy resolution,
allowing for a steady supply of liquor for several events he had scheduled for the
next month.
Instead, the rookie warrior had somehow finagled a sponsorship deal, whereby the
distillery would supply the events with FREE alcohol in exchange for all Devil
Advocates warriors wearing large, loud brand products, such as hats, t-shirts,
bandanas and sweat bands, during each fight for the next year! Worse yet, the
bastard had managed to secure himself a lump sum as negotiator!
The fact that both the distillery and the event sponsors were happy was beside
the point. Bill was team captain and he was in charge of the deal. The Dark One
would be very, very upset when he learned of this and would blame him! Bill's
excellent arena record would only serve as a shield from the boss' wrath to a point.
He was in charge and he was responsible. The legendary torments of Hell paled beside
what the boss would do if he was in a bad mood...
Bill had assigned arena flunkies to search far and wide for the grinning Father
O'Lies, but no one could find him. He apparently had anticipated Bill's wrath and
found himself a hiding hole until the fury blew over. As sneaky as the rookie was,
Bill doubted he'd find him before the next fighting cycle.
Bill paced the floor of his office in the team's opulent guildhouse and reviewed
his options.
There was nothing he could do. He needed to stand by the agreement and make it
seem like he was behind it--taking credit would keep the people at Gates of Hell
happy as well as the advertising and sponsorship committee for the arena events.
Bill would face the boss' anger and bide his time. Eventually the priest would have
to come out of hiding and he would be waiting...
In the meantime, he could at least keep up a bold face and begin planning. Bill
left his office and headed down to the training room to at least put some of his
frustration to good use and work up a sweat.
As he entered the room, stocky Lil Ethe grabbed him by the arm.
"Do you see how stupid this looks?" she growled at him.
A t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan: 'Gates of Hell--Devilishly Good' was
stretched out over her platemail armor and a tight red cap with devil's horns was
stuffed over her full helm. She was right. It was ridiculous.
Lil balled her fists and approached the Duelmaster, menace in her eye. "You had
better do something about this or I'm going to pound you silly. I'm not wearing this
junk!"
There was nothing he could do about the brand name clothing. It was a done
deal. But then again, Bill DID have some authority as to what specific brand items
were used. He could see to it that Lil had a specially made tunic that fit over her
armor. The much more aestheticaly pleasing E. Bliss could get a sexy t-shirt and he,
himself, could wear a goofy cap, seeing as he didn't wear any armor at all. And,
maybe, he could turn the situation to his advantage. Publically, no one could know
the marketing deal wasn't Bill's idea, but he COULD let Lil know...
"Hey Lil, I'll get it dealt with. FYI, the deal was done by that weasel, Father
O'Lies. He said he specifically wanted to see you in the t-shirt and cap..."
Lil snarled. "That's it. Priest or no. He dies."
Lil stormed off while Bill chuckled. She wasn't overly bright, but Lil was
persistent. She would find the rookie and then his revenge would begin. The beating
wouldn't be the whole revenge, though. Just a first taste.
SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon ARVAT, for I,
Novgorodny Vir, have returned! Nothing is certain in ARVAT, with changing loyalties,
changing Duelmasters. Write this down: new top team--DEVIL ADVOCATES. Practice
pays for LIL ETHE, who pummelled FILLIS BOUY, to pocket 13 points. FAMINE certainly
had a baffled expression on hers face, after losing to CARNAGE and losing 3 points in
the process! Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by CONVICTED
ASSASSIN, of ARVAT, who despite a 0-0-0 couldn't overcome ARVAT's Number 1. Word has
it one team in ARVAT is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death.
I'll bet it works.
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Like the noble eagle soaring amongst
the mountaintops, so stand the warriors of DEVIL ADVOCATES, alone and unchallenged.
The warriors of DEVIL ADVOCATES found their efforts at combat frustrated as ANGELS OF
PAIN apparently had more important things to do than fight. Is it charming
personality? Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, FISHER
BATES is the most challenged warrior.
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Questions are being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the
arena. A certain tavern in ARVAT would I avoid!
All good things must come to an end. My fingers tire and I fear my incessant
prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable character. ARVAT, I leave
you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Dripping Blade. 'Til next
