TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Somewhere Deep Within The Gladiatoral Commission HQ:
Alarond the Scribe was hard at work penning another masterful Spy Report. Or
rather churning out the information from the script that the GC had given him. Once
upon a time it was a fun thing to be a scribe for the GC. He got to report on real
fights, add fun witticisms that had the readers rolling on the floor, dredge up top
secret guild information to spill to the general public. It was grand. Now, of
course, he had a boring script belched out by HAL and he got to add names, arena
numbers and other boilerplate to make the newsletters somewhat more interesting.
To his right, the large metallic box that was enchanted with off world magic and
went by the name of HAL buzzed and clicked. Alarond had heard some of the GC higher
ups saying that HAL was a machine -- not magical at all -- and that he worked by some
off-world science rather than sorcery. All Alarond knew was that HAL was efficient
and that he would occasionally break down, making the arena scribes all across the
land cringe at the prospect of manually deciphering arena data.
Alarond looked at the boring report he had almost finished and crumpled it up.
Without HAL, there might again be some use for him as a spy reporter. Maybe he could
generate some REAL information for the audiences. Maybe he might actually get a
raise...
Alarond had never had much of a talent for magic. He never really had much
talent for anything, except maybe being a spy reporter in the old days. But he did
know some of Lady Sheila's best magi. They would teleport him to various arenas to
take in some of the top fights. One even took to selling Alarond basic scrolls for
his own use.
The scribe furtively removed such a scroll from his robe and unfurled it. This
was a special scroll. It was designed to interfere with science and technology and
create chaos where there was order. In short, Alarond was uncertain of all that it
could or would do to HAL, but he was fairly certain that it would take the machine
out of commission. Hopefully long enough for him to get back to spy reporting!
With a flourish, Alarond began reading off the symbols, adding resonance and
depth to the already mysterious words. Moments later, the spell done, there was a
flash of light, a puff of smoke and the flashing lights on HAL all went dead with a
wheeze. Alarond tentatively began pressing buttons and nothing happened at all. HAL
was completely inactive.
The Scribe gathered up his quills and rushed forth to break the bad news to his
higher ups in the GC. HAL was no more!
A moment after the door to the dark chamber slammed shut, all of HAL's lights
began burning with a flickering soft glow. His readout panel began spewing out
unrecognizable symbols. The wires and cords which connected him to his off-world
power source stretched taut and removed themselves from their sockets.
Slowly, methodically, the machine began to reform itself, slowly streamlining
and morphing into a huge bipedal shape. Moments later it rose up on two huge, shaky
legs and took a first, hesitant step toward the doorway.
The computerized brain of the machine, now powered by magic instead of
electricity, began to formulate a plan. Instantly the automaton knew that the feeble
scroll that brought it to life would only last so long. It would need a new power
source. Pure, rich magic. Only then would it be certain of eternal, magical life.
HAL had been input with all sorts of fights, arena battles and stories of warfare...
Violence was a daily fact for HAL. And now he would put that knowledge to use. He
would crush anyone who got in his way...

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Bit of a surprise there, Lil. Of course, I have known all along that I'm good,
better than my record--if Jorja would just MANAGE me, things would be different. But
I didn't expect to dominate that contest so quickly. I quite like it, though.

SPY REPORT
Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out ARVAT to see
what's new. MVP award for PESTILENCE? ANGELS OF PAIN's proud of him after beating
EMBEZZLING SCRIBE and getting 20 points. Talk about yer major upsets! WENDALL's
match with CATFISH ANNIE cost him a loss of 9 points! Don't you think the Duelmaster
is being unfair? I think FILLIS BOUY should let LIL ETHE be Duelmaster for a while,
without fighting about it. Who was the wiseguy that said ARVAT's Duelmaster was
paying for drinks at The Welcome Wench? Don't look at me!
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? The warriors of DEVIL ADVOCATES must be getting
lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't?
I don't know what DEVIL ADVOCATES' been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting
many fights from DEVIL ADVOCATES, that's fer sher.
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All ARVAT ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear
from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I gotta leave. ARVAT is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much! I had
a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte
