DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Father O'Lies had completed his extensive research regarding the ancient race
which lived in the swamp and had discovered some significant items of interest.
Apparently those primitives, though powerful in a strange and ritualistic form of
priestly magic, had been defeated by a confederation of the older races in Alastari.
They had gone in for human sacrifice and instead of sacrificing their own people,
they kidnapped those of the other races by stealth and guile and used them in their
horrible rituals.
Somehow the sacrificial nature of the ceremonies imbued certain items of power
with energy and caused them to become enchanted. The more sacrifices made, the
stronger the magic. And some of their ritual sites had been used for hundreds of
years.
FOL was curious why the metal monster chose those specific artifacts to seek.
It seemed likely that the life energy stored in those items somehow provided a better
"recharge" for the creature, perhaps suiting its own strange animated form better
than more standard and traditional arcane power. He checked this guess by taking
several day trips to lesser sites in the swamp which were known to ancient scholars
and found them recently defiled as well. Their artifacts were gone, though, as with
the temple, it was clear that SOMETHING had been there.
By communicating with the town council of a nearby village, he was able to check
even more sites, and found out that they had also been plundered. All except one.
An even older temple located far out in the marshes was discovered to be intact.
Through careful bribes of those sent to search, he ensured that it would remain so.
Because Father O'Lies had a plan.
The monster was seeking power for its own animation, that seemed certain. It
obviously had strong knowledge of the ancient race and its locations. However what
would happen when the artifacts were all found and used up? Would the creature need
to find another source? It seemed likely. FOL felt that he could use that to his
advantage. After all, his time as a gladiator was about to end. It would be time to
move on. An alliance with the metal creature, whereby he could provide it with
inside information from the best libraries and archives in the land in exchange for
access to the more mundane treasures found along the way--such as gold and jewels...
It seemed a lucrative enterprise.
He quickly jotted some notes in his journal and went to gather his supplies for
the trip into the marsh. He'd wait at the temple and present his offer to the
creature when it arrived. He believed that in the end, logic would win out and he'd
be able to make his deal.
Whistling, he selected weapons, clothing and supplies for a protracted stay in
the swamp. He then returned to his quarters to gather up his personal possessions.
He wouldn't be coming back here anytime soon.
Immediately he noticed that his door was slightly ajar. His journal was missing
from his desk. How could he have been so foolish? He assumed that his guildmates
were unaware of his scheming and would follow him blindly. After all, he was the
Duelmaster! But apparently they must have caught wise during the incidents earlier
in his career and had been keeping track of his movements.
There was nothing to do about it now. He gathered his items and bolted down the
back stairs. Without a look back, Father O'Lies vanished into the evening mists.

Psirena of the Fisherman's Wharf guild descended the flight of stairs into the
seedy, run down, waterfront dive. She quickly noticed a cloaked figure sitting in
the shadows in the corner and moved slowly over to join her co-conspirator.
"So, what did you find out?" She asked, motioning the barkeep for a glass of
wine.
Dee S. Troyer removed her hood and placed a weathered journal on the table.
"It's all in here. He had about a dozen schemes going all at once. But the
kicker is that he's planning on joining up with that metal monster out in the swamps.
You were right not to trust him. I didn't want to listen, but you were right."
Psirena nodded. She had known there was something off about the man. Other
than his obvious stage name, he was just too shifty, too sly. But now, what to do
about him?
SPY REPORT
Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in ARVAT this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. It seems the training can make the difference, as
DEVIL ADVOCATES is pushed out of top team by FISHERMAN'S WHARF, who came from 5th
with a 3-2-0 this turn. FISHERMAN'S WHARF stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into
a 4 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 1st place. Good work, guys!
And let's see, SLITHER fought DEE S. TROYER and gained 25 points and contributed to
SERPENTS HOLD's 1-0-0. DEE S. TROYER has lost to SLITHER, falling 20 points, while
helping make DEVIL ADVOCATES a 1-3-0 turn. We should ask LARA about the thrill of
victory, and what being the new Duelmaster does for a warrior, she's now the one to
ask. By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the
table at The Dripping Blade?
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. DEVIL ADVOCATES has cause to stand tall, as they were ARVAT's
most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And avoiding DEVIL
ADVOCATES more than any other team we find ANGELS OF PAIN. ARVAT, are we going to
accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged warrior this turn was
ASSORTED's warrior MATHEU. More fighters challenged him than challenged the
Duelmaster!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? Had I not seen it, it would be hard to believe. BIG ANGEL was sent
to the Dark Arena and lived to tell about it! Makes you think, no? Is it really
true that ARVAT has more dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just thought I'd
ask...
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Well, I'm burning daylight here in ARVAT and I've a long road
ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to paper--
