                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

I sat, pressed into the corner of my tiny, cramped cell, listening to the faint
patter of rat paws on the stone floor. They were scavenging whatever they could
find, which was not much. The rats were large and vicious, equally willing to attack
each other or work together to attack me if they felt the gain was sufficient. Today
they seemed content to just scrounge about seeking a crumb that may have fallen from
the stale bread on which I'd broken my fast.
I strained my eyes, trying to make out their scurrying shapes, and from time to
time felt I saw some movement on the periphery of my vision, but in truth there was
no light at all. My cell was a dark pit, almost as dark as my despair.
If I stood up and took two lengthy paces, that measured the breadth of my
prison. The width was slightly larger-- three paces plus a little. There was a
small hole cut in the stone in one corner for use as a latrine and a pile of moldy,
flea infested straw formed my bed. I saw light only twice each day, on the occasion
of the gaoler bringing food. The feeding slot would slide open, the glow of a torch
would blind me momentarily, and two red, bloodshot eyes would peer in, probably
seeking to see if I had died or was suffering still, and then a grimy arm would reach
in, retrieving my plate and then return with a plate full of gruel, perhaps a rind of
rotting fruit and, if I was lucky, a crust of stale bread. Mealtime was essentially
all I had to look forward to each day-- and I learned to be prepared-- as I needed to
eat everything as swiftly as possibly, for once the meal slot slammed shut, the rats
would be out in force.
How long I'd been in the cell, I was uncertain. In the dark, the mind plays
tricks. I had tried to remember the total number of meals I'd been granted to
determine a time frame, but I couldn't be sure. At least two months, but possibly
more than three. It was a long time. I'd grown emaciated and could feel every rib.
And I'd come to the prison after a period where I'd eaten very well for a stretch...
I thought back to the reason for my imprisonment. It was still hard to believe.
How did a scholar and scribe from a good family fall so far? How could I even
imagine that I'd resort to the kinds of crimes I'd committed? Despair, certainly,
started me down the path, but it was the betrayal that sealed my fate. I had begun
as a minor accountant for one of the Arvat shipping houses. I balanced ledgers and
monitored expenses. Over time, I was granted more and more responsibility.
Eventually I caught the eye of the owner of the company and he promoted me to junior
partner. While visiting his manor, I met his youngest daughter and began courting
her. After a short time, I requested her hand in marriage, and we were wed.
In retrospect, I should have realized that she married me only to get away from
her father, who treated her in a brusque, businesslike manner-- almost like a piece
of property. She had a very sharp eye and was always gazing at the local dandies--
in a most admiring fashion. I'm not sure why I didn't see that, but it seems very
clear now. Eventually, the gazes became something more, and her infidelity became
complete. As I worked extremely long hours, she was able to entertain in our home
without fear of discovery. Until, of course, that one day I returned home early,
having been given a bonus for work well done, and found her with a pretty young
fellow. It's most common in these cases for the wronged party to fly into a rage, or
so I hear, but in my case I went ice cold. I went to my desk, drew the old dagger I
had there and used as a letter opener, and... I really don't remember the action
itself. Odd, that. I do recall the pools of blood afterward. And how I slaved to
clean the place. I took the bodies by dark of night and dropped them in the harbor,
anchored with chains from one of my company's ships.
I then went to the town authorities and reported my wife missing. For a time I
had peace. Then, eventually, the letters started arriving. My dismay and rage at
discovering that I'd been observed disposing of the bodies was a sight to behold.
The fear, the despair... The letters demanded gold, at the rate of 20 coins a month,
to be left under a stone in the town park. Months went by and I left the money,
knowing that at some point it would get worse. The demands would grow-- and they
did. 20 became 30 and then 50. I knew I would have no choice again. I found my
dagger and waited in the park. Again the blood... But my blackmailer had left a
letter, sealed, with his relatives to be opened in the event of his death-- and my
prior murders were revealed. I was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
The Duke himself set the sentence, based on my lack of remorse. Oh, I was
remorseful, but not for the actual crimes. Rather that I'd been caught and was now a
doomed man.
Why was it I felt no remorse? I'd never considered myself to be a bad person.
I followed the laws. I treated others well and with respect. I think most of those
who knew me would consider me an upstanding citizen. I remember feeling love for my
wife when we were wed. I remember caring for her. But it's as if the betrayal
scoured all feeling and all decency from my soul. I have no sense of it any longer.
Almost as if I was just a shell waiting behind. Waiting for something to change. I
wasn't sure. Certainly, I had plenty of time to wait...

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly ARVAT games. Former top team SECRET SQUIRRELS was
unseated this week as BOWL O'RAMA moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with
a 5-0-1 record for the round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the
corner! Witness how this week FISHERMAN'S WHARF went 1-4-0 to move up 3 in the
rankings. Did only my eyes note the 5-0-1 record which BOWL O'RAMA managed to post
this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! BRITISH SEA
POWER caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as it skillfully bested
GILBERTO BABEL and was awarded 27 points in recognition. In one of the week's more
notable duels, S.W.A.T. put down TIA MATTE, causing her to lose 15 points of
recognition in the process. Unwilling to wait upon the will of others, Duelmaster
ABSOLUTION challenged PSIRENA last week in a match to decide the fate of the throne.
Although PSIRENA made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of
victorious ABSOLUTION. Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he
never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city ARVAT. I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this week's
challenge seeking began. THE CRIMSON CUP is feared. This much I can say. If you
didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find any of PAINFUL
THOUGHT last week. Busy avoiding THE CRIMSON CUP? Loose talk at the arena has
reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after HAPPY
FEET. Watch your back! As a gladiator gets older, the icy grip of fear lays hold of
his heart. True, DEVLIN D SEGIZE? Who could miss your "brave" challenge of CATFISH
ANNIE? The weight of the challenge fell hard upon CATFISH ANNIE and predictably she
was defeated by DEVLIN D SEGIZE. This is how to arouse the anger of an entire guild!
A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that SIR
VEILLANCE posted a challenge against the more highly recognized HANNANNA. The
results, you ask? Well, the firebrand SIR VEILLANCE won victory over HANNANNA.
Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel.
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Was I the only one shocked to see the well respected fighter HAPPY
FEET (3-0-0) appear on the sands of the Dark Arena? She is now dead. This week
marked the last days of BOB BLACKOPS BADGER who at 5-8-0 was dispatched to the Dark
Arena by the command of SECRET SQUIRRELS' demanding management. Fate is a fickle
mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the
victorious. Remember this!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off
city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier
than the sword, but a maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Empty Bottle -- Well done! A near miss there! -- Angels and Devils

College Radio -- Another TV there-- must be nice to get size 4 recruits in here. We
struggle to do better than size 14... -- Angels and Devils

Psirena -- Hot water? And Sugar? Lemon? Are you trying to give me a bath or make
me into tea? Wasn't aware of any cannibals around here, so I'm hoping it's a new spa
treatment... -- Tia Matte

Jessie Jest -- Welcome back, particularly if you run a full team. -- Angels and
Devils

RUMOR OF THE WEEK: Word has it that Murder's having free drinks at his pub for all
gladiators for the next month, as long as the gladiator provides a memento for the
wall of honor!

All -- Well, that's one way to make a reentrance after two decades of not fighting.
Giant Killers-- sorry about Redhammer, Ares is an excitable fellow, and revels in
battle (funny, that). He will not avoid the expected bloodfeud. -- Dionysus,
fighting manager of Lords of Chaos

Dionysus -- Should I list you as the manager when you appear in the Regional
     Arena News? -- the Editor

Arvat -- Hey guys! Glad to be back. Going to be weeding out the weaklings for a few
turns, but look forward to our matchups soon. -- Sir Jessie Jest, mgr of The Joker's
Wild

Hannanna -- I think S.W.A.T. means "Suffering With a Twitch." Maybe it's the 'roids.
-- Doctor Bills

Empty Bottle -- We want to say congrats on everything and after putting our heads
together at the Painful Thoughts stable, we would like to suggest that you fill your
Empty Bottle with one of those cute little model ships we always see filling bottles
down by the seashore at those fancy stores on the boardwalks. -- Painful Thoughts
P.S. It was Sandy Eyes's idea, go figure.

Bob Blackops Badger -- What's an old grump like you doing with a bunch of sneaky
Secret Squirrels? Did they fool you into believing you're a squirrel? You know,
like sometimes cats think they are dogs and stuff. -- Busted Shins

WOB -- I'm just curious: Does "WOB" stand for "Worn Out BEEEEP"? -- Busted Shins
P.S. I want it to be duelly noted (pun intended) that I mean no offense but am
merely satisfying my curiosity.

Sir Veillance -- TMI! TMI! Where you keep your sand is your business! -- Sandy Eyes

Flora D'Lune -- You gave me a good whooping but at least I could smell the flowery
scent you let off to go with the blue tweety birds and stars circling overhead as I
lay dazed upon the sands. -- Punch Puppies

Sir Veillance -- Froot E. Bowl keeps trying this tactic where he knows we'll probably
lose but will get some skills out of the deal. That plan was right in one area (the
loss), and wrong in the other (the skills). I'm trying to convince him not to try
that again! -- Wee

Genghis Khan -- That one was entertaining, and a little surprising in the end. Next
time we fight I plan to try out that Decisiveness concept I learned on you! -- T On

Busted Shins -- I think I need to complain to the arena master about this matchup. I
won't last long if I can't start learning some things from these fights. -- Wob

D.A. Cuser -- A.Cuse me? I A. Cuse you! -- Terri

Gilberto Babel -- Thought I was going to win that one once I broke your shield... was
not to be unfortunately. -- Scrab

GentleBen -- No more free wins for you, sir! I now realize I could have potentially
been the top team if I hadn't challenged Sir Veillance! Since such opportunities
will be few and far between for me, I have decided that I will no longer give you any
more what I like to call, "skill-challenges." So put that in your pipe and smoke it!
On another note, please feel free to challenge me if you think you are far outmatched
by my warriors. I promise we'll teach them something, really! -- Froot E. Bowl

Jessie -- Good to have you back. It doesn't seem like sixteen years, though, it
seems like forever! Another lifetime, another world. -- Jorja

Absolution -- Ah, so that's why! It's a relief to know it isn't due to some sin of
mine that needs your services. -- Fizzgigue, Teacher Extraordinary

We salute the tourney participants, with a special cheer (each) for Empty Bottle, 12-
3 in Adepts, Day Dream, 15-3 in Inits, and Segue Too 3, 13-3 in Rookies. Looking
very good. -- Jorja and Fisherman's Wharf

Absolution -- I think the pitcher has come too often to the well. Time to give it a
rest. -- Fizzgigue

Tia Matte -- Oh, gods, five skills and two ratings. You're going to be back, aren't
you? -- Catfish Annie

Dee N. Emmi -- I can see it's going to be that kind of year. -- Hannanna
P.S. I see it in the writing on the wall. You'd think someone would scrub these
walls, wouldn't you?

Decayed Darla -- I would recommend--seriously recommend, even urgently--that you take
up the custom of bathing. I don't know if it'd do much for you, but it would make
things easier on the rest of us. -- Hannalouise

Dionysus -- Ah, a win! Thanks. Our team needed that, and I appreciate being the one
to make it happen. -- Psirena

DM Absolution -- I always knew you would be DM some day and don't take this the wrong
way but I hope the throne gives you a rash BUTT congrats. -- Secret Squirrels

Lords of Chaos -- I know you're busy being chaotic and all but we would like to
welcome you back to the arena. -- Secret Squirrels

Zombie Squad -- Have you and The Walking Dead meet? Y'all would have so much to talk
about, eating brains, walking with a limp and stuff like that. -- Secret Squirrels

That's right folks, you read it correct, last turn the Current Top Team was indeed...
the Secret Squirrels! OH YEAH!!! We're bad, that's right, we rock, we're nuts...
finally something to whip our tails back and forth for. "We whip our tails back and
forth, we whip our tails back and forth. -- Secret Squirrels

Wee -- I played the WII Bowling once before, I do not remember it being quite this
enjoyable. -- Sir Veillance

Rotting Roland -- This is getting older than your rotting stench. -- Bob

Tempus -- Bad match-up for you but sure was fun, welcome back to Arvat. -- Miss Teary

Devlin D Segize -- What are you doing? When someone hits you with a terrific blow to
your weapon shoulder you give up, now let's try this again. -- S.W.A.T.

Hel -- Bad match-up for you, sweety, nice defense you got there, maybe you will fare
better the next time. -- Undercover Lily
