Notes from the arena champ.
Part 2
To keep myself busy, I started a program of exercise-- as much as a man can do
in a tiny, cramped cell. Every day I stretched and then began to do leg lifts and
pushed against the walls. I had to do my exercise in short intervals, as the lack of
quality food made me tire quickly, but I found that having something to do made the
time go faster between meals. I could tell the results of the exercise in a few days
and felt better and stronger, though I was even more ravenous at mealtimes. I was
tempted to kill and eat some of the rats as a source of meat, but dreaded the
diseases the foul rodents might carry. I considered it a last resort in the event of
my meal schedule becoming erratic.
Another tool to kill the time that I used was to remember different days of my
life and break them down into the smallest detail. Recalling what I wore, who I
spoke with, work I did, letters I wrote and every other item of note, I would
envision the scene and review what I could have done differently. I became so
skilled at this pastime that I almost went into a trance-- it was more than a
daydream but less than being truly asleep. It was definitely a strange sensation.
Soon I had every day within the past 10 years filed in my mind and could recall the
slightest detail at will. This ability began to apply itself in other strange ways,
as I began noticing tastes and textures of my food more acutely, and I could smell
the cheap rum and tar from smoking pitch-sticks on my gaoler, when he delivered my
meals.
Abruptly my routine was shattered.
One day, as I was performing my exercises, I heard footsteps coming toward my
cell. It felt too soon for my evening meal, and it was. Abruptly the cell door
clanged open and a lantern blazed, blinding and stunning me.
"He looks fit," boomed a harsh voice, the first I'd heard in a very long time.
"What have you been feeding him?"
"Jus' da same slop I give aller dem. Nuttin' difrent. I swear, doctor, he gets
da same."
"You there. You have been in this cell for six months. I'm here to inspect
you. Turn around and place your hands on your head."
I complied, still in a state of shock. The doctor felt my muscles and poked and
prodded me for several moments.
"He's fine. Actually impressively so. No sign of leprosy or the plague. And
he seems fit. He'll do."
Suddenly rougher hands grasped me. One took my right arm and twisted it behind
my back, while the other took me by the neck and thrust me toward the cell door. I
opened my eyes, but the glare of the lantern caused them to burn and tear. I could
make out the shape of the gaoler, and the doctor. I was not certain who had taken
ahold of me-- perhaps another guard.
We went up the stone tunnel and a flight of damp stone steps, then down another
corridor. I counted my steps and memorized the direction we went, in case the
information would be useful in the future. After another moment I heard a door open
and I was thrust into a small room. By that point my eyes were working a bit better,
and if I squinted, I could see shapes and forms well enough. The room appeared to be
an office, and a large man in a military uniform sat behind a desk. He was drumming
his fingers on the desk, and apprising me the way a merchant might eye a prized
stallion.
"Prisoner. You have two choices. One-- you can go back to your cell. Two-- we
have been assigned to find recruits for the arena. Volunteers are in short supply.
If you chose this option, we will place you in a small arena with 4 other men. There
will be no weapons. You will fight these men to the death. Whichever of you
survives will be sold to an arena team. That is all. What is your choice."
I hadn't used my voice in months. But I knew what I wanted. "I will fight," I
croaked.
SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, ARVAT? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. If this keeps up, THE JOKER'S WILD,
you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 6 in the rankings? CALL
THE PRIEST turned their 2-2-0 turn into a 8th place rank in the listings this turn.
Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch COLLEGE
RADIO's heads swell from their 4-1-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk,
big deal. Tsk, tsk, DECAYED DARLA beat WEE and WEE lost 15 points. You're breakin'
my heart. Due to absence, and inability to defend the throne, ABSOLUTION has lost
the Title of Duelmaster. Start setting that alarm earlier! And it's out with the
old, in with the new, as MATHEU takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old
Duelmaster. Heh, heh. The Welcome Wench, humph! I've tasted better ale at
mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From ARVAT's trash dumps?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. ARVAT,
I am losing what little hope I had in you. THE WALKING DEAD the most avoided team?
What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And who led the way in this mass act of
cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was LORDS OF CHAOS. Ha ha ha ha!
Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, CATFISH ANNIE was this turn's most challenged
warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. CATFISH ANNIE was challenged by one of
DEVIL ADVOCATES' warriors this turn, with DEVLIN D SEGIZE having a lead of 19 points
going into the fight. And golly gee, DEVLIN D SEGIZE subdued CATFISH ANNIE. Aren't
we all surprised and impressed? I guess I can give a little credit to BRITISH SEA
POWER of COLLEGE RADIO for challenging up by 22 to TEMPUS. BRITISH SEA POWER won to
get 52 points of recognition. And we have TAKE YOUR LUMPS in a challenge, going down
11 points for the fight. Guess what? I thought TAKE YOUR LUMPS showed great skill
and promise when it bested FIZZGIGUE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. We're all going to die in the end, so why
worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later?
What does the ARVAT arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Just wait 'till next time I show
up here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah! I see the crowds are getting restless, I
