Part 3

From the time I agreed to fight, there was not much time for me to prepare.
They thrust me into a chamber with a trainer, and he quickly washed me and greased my
body with oil. My vision was coming back slowly, and I could now see in dim lighting
if I squinted. Bright lights still hurt my eyes, and voices seemed thunderously
loud. Still, I had the chance not to go back to my cell and I was determined to take
it.
The trainer, a grizzled old man with one eye, leaned in close, "No mercy, boy.
They won't show you any. Kill or be killed. If you live, they will sell you to one
of the arena teams, and you will have a new chance to live. If you die... Well,
that's another kind of peace."
My creaky voice almost failed me as I said, "Why no weapons?"
"They are looking to see who has the most cunning and ingenuity. Who wants it
the most. They can teach any fool to use a sword. They are looking for heart, boy.
If you have enough of it, you will win."
I nodded. I had other advantages as well. My body, though starved, was lean
and my muscles were honed, I had amazing recall and ability to study and focus as I
fought. I would be alright.
Moments later a guard came and took me to a staging area. In an instant, a
portcullis rose and I walked out into a small five sided arena. Each of the sides
had a portcullis and from each strode another combatant. Two of the men did not
impress me at all. One was a weasely, frightened looking man who sought to run back
into his staging room. The second was a stout man seemingly past his prime.
Of more concern was a giant, hairy monster who snarled and charged immediately
at the stout fellow with murder in his eye. Fortunately, he was occupied, which
allowed me to focus on the last of us, a strong looking man with an air of
confidence. I moved to engage that fighter, instinctively knowing that he was the
most dangerous and that I'd need to handle him while I was fresh.
I moved in, shifting as I approached. I had very little martial training in my
free life, but had some basic unarmed combat lessons so I was not a complete novice.
Also, I had a near addiction to the gladiatorial games and hardly missed the fights
in Arvat over a five year span. Occasionally, in my cell, I'd remember days where
I'd watched fights and in my mind's eye, broke down the fights to the point where I
could replay the battles almost as if I were one of the combatants. Quickly I called
up the images of some of the open hand battles and reviewed the techniques and styles
the warriors used. Perhaps I wasn't much of a fighter, but many of those I'd watched
were of the best in Alastari and I planned on using their moves, exactly as I
remembered them.
Confidently, I feinted towards my foe. He was apparently expecting a simple
lunge or a basic assault, and he ducked down, betraying his defensive plan. I
stepped in and fired a jab straight into his nose. Breaking a man's nose creates a
lot of blood and pain, even if it's not life threatening. More importantly, it can
be blinding. In this case that's exactly what happened. Blood spurted and the man
fell back onto the sand, stunned. I moved in with a sharp kick which caught him
under the chin, snapping his head backward. He slumped to the ground with a broken
neck.
Just as when I had killed my wife and her lover, I was in a fog-- a haze that
enveloped me and seemed to muffle my feelings and concerns. Unworried that I'd
simply extinguished another human being, I turned to survey the remaining
contestants. The stout, older fellow was dead, seemingly with a broken back and the
giant was chasing the timid man, trying to cut him off and trap him. The exercise
was clearly intense, as the little fellow was quick, and the energy he was exerting
was clearly draining the giant. I allowed their ballet to continue, until the giant
eventually managed to get one hand onto the timid man, then snatched him up into the
air and brought him down suddenly over his knee. I heard a crack and knew the
smaller man's back had been broken.
The giant turned and eyed me as I stood, unafraid before him. He panted for a
moment, then charged.
I allowed him to get close, then dodged to the side and fired a kick into the
side of the giant's knee. Hearing the pop and his following roar was most
satisfying.
Wounded, the giant was still dangerous. I could easily outmaneuver him, but my
body was tiring quickly. Even with all my exercise in my cell, I was still
undernourished and weak. The giant seemed well fed and fit, although with a broken
knee, he was crippled. I needed to finish him quickly. Having watched him, he
seemed a very instinctive brawler, so I determined to use that against him. I
circled to my right, then faked a stumble. He instantly lunged forward two fisted,
trying to grapple.
I stepped back and kicked again, catching him in the forehead. His head snapped
back, but the thick bands of muscle prevented a broken neck. Still he was stunned.
I chopped to his windpipe, crushing his larynx and severely hampering his breathing.
As he lay there, groaning, I dispatched him with a heel to his throat.
I gasped with exertion amid a scattering of applause from the dark seating above
the small arena.
Moments later the guards emerged from the portcullis behind me and gently
maneuvered me off of the sands. I was brought back to the captain's room, where I
was allowed to sit.
The brawny captain beamed down at me, at his back was a bank of shadows which
seemed particularly black and ominous. "Well done, boy, you did very, very well.
You drew attention from many of the top teams in Arvat. The bidding grew very
heated. In the end, you were sold for the most money in the history of this program.
Most impressive."
Knowing many of the arena teams and managers from my days as a spectator, I
croaked out, "Who do I belong to?"
At that, the shadows parted, revealing a hooded figure with a black staff held
by a withered hand with a large gold ring. The captain spoke, "You are now a minion
of the Dark One."

ANNOUNCING TURF WAR VIII; DM47; JULY 2012

Don't miss the premier event in all Alastari! Gather an alliance. (2 to 4
managers). Select a captain. Send in your entry fee(certs). Prepare your warriors.
The competition, the acclaim, and the prizes await.
The Turf War is expected to bring ten or more teams to battle. The competition
is fierce. Only one Alliance can win TW8. Will it be yours?

                                 *TURF WAR 8 RULES*

                          Starting July 30 2012 (12 turns)
Bring acclaim and glory to the North Fork (DM47) arena.

Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances
created solely to compete in the Turf War! To participate, each alliance must:
        1. Announce the Captain of the alliance in the North Fork (DM 47)
            newsletter.
        2. Indicate in the newsletter which Captain/alliance you will join.
        3. Announcements made on the D2 Forums or elsewhere will not be accepted.

Captains are responsible for:
        1. Verifying/authorizing, in the North Fork newsletter, those who wish to
participate under the banner of their alliance. (Lack of participant indication of
joining and/or lack of lack of Captain confirmation will delay a team's participation
in the Turf War.)
        2. Distribution of prizes should their alliance win the Turf War.
        3. Submit two (2) RSI Roll-Up Certificates to participate. (Note: Captains
may, if they wish, submit certs for all potential members of their alliance.)

Participating managers who are not Captains must:
        1. Submit two (2) RSI Roll-Up Certificates to participate. (Unless already
submitted by Captain. Note: extras will not be returned, but will go into the winning
pool of prizes.)
        2. Announce their intent to compete with manager name, team name, and
alliance they will represent in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter. Announcement made
on the D2 Forums will not be accepted.
               a. No scores will be tabulated until an RSI Gift Certificate is
received, and participant indication and captain confirmation are posted in the North
Fork newsletter. NO EXCEPTIONS.
               b. Before a manager can compete, he/she must declare themselves in
the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter as stated above AND be verified in the newsletter
by the alliance Captain they will represent.
               c. Only one (1) team per player may compete. No arena multiple teams
or aliases will be allowed. Violations will result in immediate manager
disqualification (including team point adjustments) from the Turf War (so be sure to
take any multiple teams OFF of Team Maintenance and be certain not to run any other
team warriors).
               d. Scoring will NOT be retroactive for teams/alliances that do not
properly declare or get captain confirmation or fail to send a Gift Certificate by
Turn 1. In other words, if your Gift Certificate is not received until Turn 3 of the
Turf War, and you have fought on Turns 1 and 2, your score will not begin until Turn
3. All conditions must be met before scoring will begin--declaration, verification,
and Gift Certificate received.
               e. No declarations or verifications will be accepted after Turn 3 of
the Turf War.
               f. For purposes of scoring, the moderators will score the Turf War
and settle any and all disputes as they arise. Their decisions will be final.
(Note: the intent is to have a very thorough set of rules so that few decisions, if
any, are required from the moderators.)

Scoring will be as follows for Fights:

Final (12 round total) alliance w/l% percentage ****
*After 2nd win in DA, warrior scores no additional points for wins,
** Champions double applies to his score only -- not to opponent.
*** No warrior may be substituted without the proper use of the DA or arena death
or death in a tournament or graduation. There must be a maximum of five only on a
team at any point and time. (The penalty for such substitution is -10 points.)
Points awarded for team tournament participation are 1 for 1 entrant, 3 for 2
entrants, 6 for 3 entrants, 10 for 4 entrants, and 15 for 5 entrants. A TV scores 7
points or a TC scores 15 points. Death in a tournament results in a -3 score.
    ***** Halfway points scored are 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 5, 5 (etc) for 1st, 2nd, 3rd
(etc). (To qualify for any of these points the alliance must have fought 75% of its
possible fights.) Final 12 Round points scored are 40, 30, 20, 15, 10, 5, 5, 5 (etc)
for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd (etc). (To qualify for any of these points the alliance must
have fought 75% of its possible fights.)

Special Scoring Considerations for the Turf War are as follows:
Full Team: +1
      1. A team which fights 4+ warriors (Includes DAing) gets a point
Full Alliance +1
2. An alliance were ALL teams get a Full Team point earns a point
Full Team/Alliance scores
      3. Will double for the last half (6 rounds) of TW8.
Style Master: +2
      1. No matter how many stylemasters, an individual team can score only +2 per
         round
Duelmaster: +2
      1. Duelmaster points shall be earned separate of stylemaster points.

Champions:
     1. A Champion may be declared, but one is not mandatory.
     2. Only one Champion allowed per manager at any given time.
     3. Champions that graduate or are killed by another warrior in the arena, but
not the Dark Arena, may be replaced.
     4. Champions must have fought at least one previous fight in the North Fork
(DM47 arena) to be able to be declared a champion.
     5. A Champion can be declared on any round and point factors will begin that
same turn. (Must meet above 4 conditions prior to declaring)

Bloodfeuds:
        1. Bloodfeuds will score points on all four (4) turns.
        2. There is no limit to which warrior may bloodfeud or how often.
        3. To score as a bloodfeud, then feud/death must have occurred totally
within the TW8. (E.g. Feuds created prior to TW8 will not be deemed or scored as a
bloodfeud, but rather as a challenge or downchallenge.

Downchallenges:
        1. A downchallenge occurs when a warrior challenges a warrior in a lower
class. (Lower class is defined as lower than the identical class. (E.g. A
challenger champion class challenging a champion class is a down challenge.)
        2. In TW8 a standard challenge is up (in recognition points), parallel or
within the identical class but lower recognition.
        3. No challenge by The Duelmaster shall be deemed a downchallenge. (This
rule supersedes all other downchallenge rules.)

Tournament Considerations:
        1. Tournament participation is allowed and ENCOURAGED as a great form of
recognition for North Fork.
        2. Tournament Victors won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 7 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a warrior(s) wins such
status.
        3. Tournament Champions won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 15 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a warrior(s) win such
status.
        4. Points awarded for tournament participation are 1 for 1 entrant, 3 for 2
entrants, 6 for 3 entrants, 10 for 4 entrants, and 15 for 5 entrants. A TV scores 7
points additional or a TC scores 15 points additional. Death in a tournament results
in an additional -3 score.
        5. Points for entrants, TVs, TCs, and tournament deaths will be applied the
Turn after RSI posts tournament results in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter (i.e.,
if the results post on North Fork turn 300, points will be credited on North Fork
turn 301 to the applicable teams).

Special Considerations:
        1. Each alliance begins the Turf War with zero (0) points.
        2. There will be NO alliance or team changes once the contest has begun. If
you begin the Turf War with Alliance A, you must end the Turf War with Alliance A.
If you begin the Turf War with Team A, you must end the Turf War with Team A.
        3. There will be a maximum of four (4) teams/managers allowed per alliance
for the Turf War VII. The minimum is two (2).
        4. The Dark Arena may be used on the first FE turn (e.g. no arena or
tournament fights) only, of every warrior, without penalty.
        5. If at any time, the Moderators determine that any non-TW team in the
arena is aiding and/or abetting any TW alliance or team, the affected points won by
the gifted team/alliance will be disallowed and the aiding non-TW team will be asked
to desist from play in the arena until after the Turf War concludes.

Prizes:
The Turf War is meant to be a "winner takes all" contest. However, for TW8, a prize
(RU cert) will be awarded each of the twelve turns to the individual team/manager
that fights five fights and has the best w/l record that turn. (Tiebreakers are in
this order-- kills, recognition points earned.) All prizes and 100% of the Gift
Certificates will be awarded to the Captain of the winning alliance at the end of the
competition. It is the responsibility of the Captain to distribute Gift
Certificates. Moderators will submit a list of each manager on the winning alliance
to RSI at the completion of the contest for the non-Certificate prizes.

All entry fees (rollup certs) are awarded to the winning alliance, except for
the twelve reserved for the individual winning manager each week.)
The following prizes have been secured from RSI:
        1.  Renaming of the North Fork (DM 47) arena;
        2. Renaming of all Dark Arena Monsters (two for each manager in the winning
alliance, and two additional for the captain of the alliance).
        3. Known Favorites for one DM47 warrior on each team of the winning alliance
(warrior must be ranked Initiate or above, must be alive, and must have at least one
DM47 arena fight to receive this award).
        4. +1 Skill bonus (three) for each manager on the winning alliance. Bonus
potions must be applied to living warriors from DM 47.
        5. +1 Skill bonus potion (one) for each and every individual manager who
fights in all 12 rounds AND 54 fights of the Turf War. Bonus potion must be applied
to a living warrior from (DM 47)
        6. Two additional rollup certs for each manager of the winning alliance from
RSI.
These RSI awards will be listed by the Moderator for claiming from RSI (Lee)
within 4 turns of the end of TW VI. The certs will be mailed to the winning alliance
by the Moderators within two weeks of the end of the TW.

Moderators:
The Moderators for this event will be Oz and Master Darque. They will arbitrate all
dealings during the course of the contest. Their decisions will be final. All
questions, comments, and scoring disputes may be directed to Land of Oz or Darque
Forces via diplo in DM 47. Managers with internet access may send a private message
to [The Consortium] or [Darque] on the Duel2 Forums. Lastly, you may also email
questions, comments, and scoring disputes to rebelnerfherder at yahoo dot com or
wfms101 at aol dot com.

Please note there have been rule changes from the last Turf War. Please read them
carefully!

This contest will begin in late July 2012 following the Summer FTF.

                                      SPY REPORT

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out ARVAT to see
what's new. Too bad, BOWL O'RAMA, but COLLEGE RADIO was just too good to be stopped.
I don't wanna hurt anybody's feelings or anything, but PAINFUL THOUGHT really goofed
with their 0-4-0. The guys at COLLEGE RADIO like really pulled together to get a
4-1-0 this turn, moving up by 3. Cut this out and put it in your scrapbooks, DEVIL
ADVOCATES! 'Cause they got 3-1-0 and moved up to 4th! MVP award for DAY DREAM?
KHAOS' proud of him after beating RAZORGIRL and getting 41 points. Talk about yer
major upsets! ROTTING ROLAND's match with BRITISH SEA POWER cost him a loss of 10
points! Like, S.W.A.T. must be pretty gutsy! He challenged the Duelmaster from
ASSORTED. Does this guy have a death wish or what! This Duelmaster is like
something else! MATHEU stopped S.W.A.T. dead in his tracks! Is the Duelmaster
really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? DEVIL ADVOCATES was the most avoided team. Is a
1320-761-63 record really that scary? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are DEVIL
ADVOCATES? DEVIL ADVOCATES, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't get them
to accept an invitation! Like, is DECAYED DARLA popular, or what? She was
challenged the most in all of ARVAT! She's got a 4-5-0, is that good? Some fights
are really unfair. How do you think CATFISH ANNIE feels about being challenged by
DEVLIN D SEGIZE, 26 points above her? DEVLIN D SEGIZE beat CATFISH ANNIE. No
surprise about that. Really I'm not surprised DEVLIN D SEGIZE would do such a scummy
thing, either. I'm not so sure MISS TEARY knew all the facts when she challenged
TAKE YOUR LUMPS of COLLEGE RADIO. I saw MISS TEARY stumbling and dribbling at The
Welcome Wench last week... Like, was that some fighting on MISS TEARY's part, or
what? And she got 24 points out of it! (besides getting in my report) Poor TAKE
YOUR LUMPS.
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All ARVAT ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a
job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Deer Tick -- Adios! The boss says he's sorry for your manager's loss, but after last
year's bout with Lyme Disease, the only good Deer Tick is a dead Deer Tick... -- Pam
Demonium

Flora D'Lune -- Well, sounds like you get your revenge. The boss was annoyed with me
and particularly my learning, so he's sending me to the Dark Arena. He said this
body was what they used to call a "Dixie" or dixie cup-- meaning you throw it away if
it doesn't learn well, so off I go. He did say he promised to ressurect me if a
suitable body can be found, in which case perhaps your team can eventually have a
really unconventional bloodfeud... -- Pam Demonium

Secret Squirrels -- You're not rid of me just yet. I'm off to a Champions tournament
first and then we will see. -- Absolution

Mathieu -- Here's a free Duelmastership for you. I expect to see a column! --
Absolution

RUMOR OF THE WEEK -- Word has it that the economy in Arvat has recently rebounded.
Construction is booming and new leisure palaces for the nobility of Malcorn,
Chimlevtal and Riztab are being constructed along the riverfront. Investment
opportunities abound. Contact the offices of Duke Arnie for investment chances.

T On -- Guess that "T" stands for Teaching! Wow and Thanks -- Balkir

College Radio -- My apologies on the death of Deer Tick. Was not our intention, but
it is a risk inherent in our profession. -- Froot E. Bowl

Balkir -- I wasn't quite expecting a challenge from you, if so I would have tried to
learn a few of your tricks. -- T On

Decayed Darla -- Nice Challenge! I think I made a tactical mistake on my choice of
shield, that won't happen again. -- Wee

Convicted Thief -- One hit, really? -- Wob

Scrab -- Here's to you, old chap! I had such high hopes, but one learn in four
fights is about the extent of my patience. -- F.E.Bowl

Clare d'Lune -- Doctor Bills and I want to know how you keep getting matched against
us? You're cute and all but we tire of you already. You need to Call the Priest or
something. -- Punch Puppies

Touch of Evil -- That was a strange fight. I hit you, you hit me, I hit you, you hit
me, then I quit. I didn't really want to you understatnd, but you weren't playing
fair and now I have to pay another doctor bill. -- Doctor Bills

Roting Roland -- Don't any of you parts fall off? Oh wait, you don't have leprosy,
you're just rotting away. -- Sandy Eyes
P.S. I don't know if anyone has told you but you're starting to smell a bit.

Dionysus -- I must admit we had a good fight, even with me being on the losing end.
I appreciate the compliment. -- Sandy Eyes

DM Matheu -- Congrats on the throne. Maybe you can answer a question for me, how can
you call your self "assorted" if there is only one flavor? Hmmmm? -- Secret
Squirrels
P.S. Maybe it is a Secret Recipe

Bowl O'Rama -- You're on quite a roll, good luck on keeping it up. -- Secret
Squirrels

Putrid Paula -- That's the way the flesh peals away from the bone sometimes. --
Undercover Lily

Psirena -- Now that was some gooooooooood fishin, thanks. -- S.W.A.T.

Tia Matte -- You did alright....for a girl with matted hair. -- Miss Teary

Hannanna -- You almost had me there. -- Sir Veilance
P.S. I was just playing easy to get to draw you, then I lay on the smolder. ;)

Gilberto Babel -- My God, boy, can you ever babel on and on and on, sheesh! -- Nut
Case

Dee N. Emmi -- I wasn't "playing" possum, I almost am one. -- Fizzgigue

Take Your Lumps -- I don't WANT your lumps. I have enough trouble with my own. --
Fizzgigue
P.S. What else could you expect me to say?

S.W.A.T. -- Squirrel With A Temper. I suppose, after five skills and two ratings,
you'll be back. -- Psirena

Devlin D Seqize -- The shape of this day on the sands for us is already evident. An
oh-fer. Bleh. -- Catfish Annie
P.S. Jorja may not do much managing, but she DOES read the fights, and the sarcastic
comments we're going to hear about this... oog.

Sir Veillance -- Not so secret. Squirrels are alwas staring. Of course, maybe
that's your secret, you do what is expected, but for ulterior motives? -- Hannanna

Ghengis Khan -- Really? I thought YOU were the giant. -- Hannalouise
P.S. Okay, not physically, but that's trivial.
