DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
TWO WEEKS AGO
Clev Inskall was furious. He'd worked as a scribe for the Arvat Arena for 15
years and it was very rare that he had been treated so badly. Each week, he would
compile the arena data, log the posted challenges and, his favorite part, would
scrible the Duelmaster's Column--writing down the notes of the arena champion. A few
minutes before, he had been summoned to take down the words of the new title holder,
Dee N. Emmi. Usually these meetings were fast and efficient, as Clev prided himself
on his efficiency. This time, however, he was rocked by an insult. The Duelmaster
glibly began the meeting by saying: 'You there--arena scribe. Take notes. And NO
Embezzling!'
The embezzling had been years ago, and Clev had been long pardoned by the Duke
and had been trying to live down that one moment of bad judgement for years. True,
his contract called for him to go into the arena under the alias 'Embezzling Scribe'
to work as a fill-in from time to time, but that was just to entertain the crowds
when there were an odd number of gladiators. No one took it seriously.
Clev stormed through the lower chambers of the arena. Revenge would be his! He
would claim vengeance for this insult!
TWO DAYS AGO
Jerry Hahn stepped out onto the sands of the Arvat Arena to scattered applause.
He didn't mind. He was the new man on the Devil Advocates team and though he
was little known now, his future was bound to be filled with glory and honors. Jerry
ran through his footwork and played up to the crowd. They would love him soon
enough.
A moment later the far gate rose and his opponent entered the arena. It was the
actor hired to play the 'Embezzling Scribe,' an arena fill-in. Jerry smiled. A free
win. He could start his career 1-0 and be on his way to the top of the arena.
Secretly, they always gave out blunted weapons when gladiators were fighting the
stand-ins. First, it was all just an act and second, no one would want to be an
arena stand-in if they were going to get killed!
Jerry approached the scribe. The horn sounded and they rushed at each other.
Jerry figured he'd make things look good. Play with the scribe a bit and then, after
a bit of acting, he'd beat the guy down and listen to the cheers.
Suddenly 'Embezzling Scribe' jumped forward, dagger flashing. Jerry was hit in
the neck. He stepped back, wiping the blood with his off hand.
Blood? Wait! This was supposed to be with blunt weapons!
The scribe kicked Jerry back onto the sands, then calmly kneeled beside him and
slit his throat with a razor sharp dagger. Jerry died, gurgling, to the shocked
silence of the crowd.
PRESENT DAY
Dee N Emmi paced back and forth in the Duelmaster's Hall in the Arvat arena.
News had just come that the hunt for the run-away scribe was not going well. After
the man had foully murdered poor Jerry, he'd headed out into the swamps. Local
trackers were brought in, but the scribe had a boat waiting and either a map or a
guide, as he was long gone. Worse, word just came in that he had embezzled over 200
gold sovereigns from the arena treasury, so he would have ample funds to flee on.
Dee was not good at all this worrying and definitely was not up to planning a
search. She was leaving that up to the Duke's men. But she only wanted to know one
thing. The scribe had seemed a mild mannered, even pleasant man. What in the world
could have compelled him to commit such a heinous crime?
Dee grabbed an apple from the bowl on near her desk. She took a bite. It was
sweet and crisp.
She sat down. Likely she would never know what set the scribe off. It would
remain a mystery...
SPY REPORT
I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. ARVAT needs a spyreport." Oh, well. Too bad, THE CRIMSON
CUP, but DEVIL ADVOCATES was just too good to be stopped. Uncool, NOTORIOUS. I mean
0-0-0 is bad. Will they will be allowed to fight? I say use 'em for training
practice! The guys at PHILANTHROPISTS like really pulled together to get a 4-1-0
this turn, moving up by 7. One team deserves special mention 'cause they moved up 1
after going 4-1-0. Keep it up, DEVIL ADVOCATES! MVP award for ABSOLUTION? ANGELS
OF PAIN's proud of him after beating MISS TEARY and getting 30 points. Like
ASSORTED's MATHEU is sweating since he got challenged by Duelmaster DEE N. EMMI!
This Duelmaster is like something else! DEE N. EMMI stopped MATHEU dead in his
tracks! Who was the wiseguy that said ARVAT's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at
The Dripping Blade? Don't look at me!
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? DEATH BY DESIGN was the most
avoided team. Is a 46-71-6 record really that scary? Hhmph! What kind of warriors
are COLLEGE RADIO? DEATH BY DESIGN, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't
get them to accept an invitation! Like, is SWERK popular, or what? He was
challenged the most in all of ARVAT! He's got a 5-4-0, is that good? For sure, I
was holding my breath when I found out BRAINS MCGEE challenged ANGUS GREYWALL. After
all, haven't THE WALKING DEAD and THE CRIMSON CUP had a long standing duel in ARVAT?
It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but ANGUS GREYWALL wants me to write
about it since he was overcame by BRAINS MCGEE. Satisfied?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All ARVAT ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. What a bummer! MISS TEARY got wasted by ABSOLUTION! But with a
13-10-1, I guess SECRET SQUIRRELS aren't too bummed. Like was that some Bloodfeud,
or what? (GILBERTO BABEL vs. BLASPHEMY, that is.) Hey you guys, don't you think your
families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really
