TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Overkill returns...
His father had died young on the arena sands...too young. His grandparents
raised him in a nomadic lifestyle, shunning anything to do with the arena. Their
son's death was too real, too fresh, even many years later. Once he became a man, he
became interested in the warrior lifesytle, but only from a distance. It seemed as
soon as he began to get to know a few of the warriors and managers in the town, it
was time to move on again. Though he had come of age, his grandparents depended on
him and he on them for food and shelter. And the years passed.
His grandmother, one of those old women with a glint in her eye that always
seemed to betray that she knew far more than she let on...passed away during one of
the colder months. His grandfater died soon after, unable to live any more withoutht
the love of his life. On his deathbed, shortly before passing, he motioned for his
grandson to come close.
"This may surprise you, my boy, but I once managed a great stable of warriors in
the granite walled city of Vithicar. That city may have passed from the memory of
some...but I keep its spirit alive in my heart. But that heart is fading fast..."
His grandfather told him many stories about warriors long past and mighty deeds
done. He listened until falling asleep at his grandfather's side. When he awoke, he
was alone in the world. Clutched in the dead hands of his grandfather was a map of
the hinterlands near the ruined city of Viticar, now barely more than a few mounds of
moss covered rubble on the ground. Strange markings were scrawled on it...
Months later he had melted through 30 feet of an immense ice wall and he became
aware that he was nearing the end of his quest. Three figures glowed with a strange
reddish light just inches behind the last bit of ice that entombed them. He would
have to say the words he learned and studied quickly, or all would be lost. Minutes
later, three figures shook and strained long unused muscles.
"You say that over twenty years have passed and we have not aged a bit?" the
thin one with the sly smile said.
"Yes, Vade, that's what he said for the tenth time! Something about a magical
spell cast on us to preserve us... I wish you bothered to pay attention!" a muscular
warrior countered.
Vade replied, "Firmament, you are just as grumpy as you were twenty years ago!
Age has NOT mellowed you! And THAT one still doesn't talk!"
Firmament burst out with a large guffaw, "That's exactly why we call him
'Somebody'! It's too much work to give him a real name."
Now both warriors were chuckling. They turned again to the one who had freed
them. Firmament bellowed an announcement, "I can't wait to get back on the sands of
Vithicar and start smashing in some heads like the good old days! It seems like just
yesterday...."
The young man, grandson of the great manager of this motley group, grinned
inwardly to himself. "I would be greatly honored to be your manager in my
grandfather's place... but about Vithicar...um..." The explanation would come later.
NOW they needed a permanent home.

there are sorrows to drown for LIVESHIP TRADERS, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them
by 7 into 14th. B.I.G. stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into a 7 space move up
the rankings. This brings them up to 11th place. Good work, guys! On their very
first turn, REBEL SCUM had a 4-1-1, and with this kind of luck or skill, should do
well. Welcome to ARVAT. And let's see, PIMP IN A BOX fought ITEM and gained 26
points and contributed to DEATH BY DESIGN's 3-2-0. ITEM has lost to PIMP IN A BOX,
falling 25 points, while helping make ERRATA a 1-2-0 turn. Defending his title for
another turn, TRUST BUSTER 1 kept ERRATA's warrior, COFFEE, from claiming the throne.
Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters
do dishes at The Welcome Wench until they win. Maybe?
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. I also notice that the DRAGON
RIDERS stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on ARVAT, what are you
afraid of? And avoiding DRAGON RIDERS more than any other team we find SAVAGE HORDE.
ARVAT, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged
warrior this turn was BUFFY'S DINER's warrior MISS AMERICAN PIE. More fighters
challenged her than challenged the Duelmaster! Well now, what do you expect when
someone like MISS AMERICAN PIE from BUFFY'S DINER challenges down 17 points to fight
BRAINS MCGEE of THE WALKING DEAD? Well, will you look at this, MISS AMERICAN PIE was
killed by BRAINS MCGEE, and BUFFY'S DINER will have to explain why they made such a
challenge in the first place.
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and

AVOIDS, BLOODFEUDS, & CHALLENGES

Ever wonder how the whole challenge/avoid thing works?
Who you fight depends on exactly how it works. We will never know exactly how it
works unless we can get a look at the coding for the program, but this is how I think
it works:
The Situation:
The system allows a warrior to make two separate challenges and two distinct
avoids.
Avoids are distinct in that they MUST indicate a specific team to be avoided, so
a "double avoid" indicates a single team twice, which by default means you are
avoiding one team. In this case, the second avoid is a duplicate and therefore a
waste of an avoid.
Challenges are to specific warriors. You have a first challenge, and then you
have a second challenge.
The Process:
First the computer removes all Dark Arena challengers from the list of available
warriors.
Second, the computer checks for WHO fights WHO by going though all TVs and
bloodfeuds, which are 100% sure to go through except in four instances:
1. the warrior challenged does not fight,
2. the warrior challenged is also making a bloodfeud or TV challenge and that
challenge has already been assigned,
3. the warrior has already been assigned to a Dark Arena fight,
4. that warrior has declared your team to be one of his warrior's avoids,
reducing your challenge to 50%.
Third, the computer assesses all the regular first-challenge warriors and assigns
fights. All other challenges are at 100% chance of success except in a few instances:
warrior challenged is going to the DA, warrior challenged is involved in a previously
assigned challenge, warrior challenged is not running this turn, or warrior challenged
has avoided your team at 50% chance to avoid.
Fourth, the computer assesses and assigns all secondary challenges of warriors
not so far assigned for bloodfeuds and TVs.
Fifth, the computer assesses and assigns all the regular second challenges.
Sixth, the computer assigns random matchups in each available class starting with
the highest class first.
Seventh, the computer finds the remaining warriors that have successfully avoided
all first and second challenges and/or who also did not get randomly assigned, AND for
whom no more available warriors remain in their class for random pairing. All of
these warriors get RSI-generated warriors to fight based on their class.
So, if I'm right and avoids reduce the chance for a challenge to 50%, then:
In the absence of an avoid
single challenge = 100% success
double challenge = 100% success, then an additional 100% success
Where an avoid is involved
single challenge vs avoid = 50% success
double challenge vs avoid = 75% (chance to avoid is 0.5 * 0.5 = 0.25; 1 -
0.25 = 75% chance to succeed
Bloodfeuds and TVs may increase the percentage chance of success above 100%, or
they may not. I feel that their increased ability to get through is based solely on
the way the computer assigns challenges. They are first, so they are most likely to
go through. The 100% chance for a challenge to succeed is 100% if it's a TV bloodfeud
and you are the first one to get assigned a fight that day because you are also the
Duelmaster. But after that the chances start to diminish rapidly.
The run-through for second challenges theoretically means your challenge should
be 100% but it's not the case if you are the LAST guy the computer goes to for finding
challenges.
If you don't double challenge, you significantly lower your chance to get your
challenge through. The second challenge is not equal to the first challenge.
