DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
On the door of the Duelmaster's "Throne Room" an OUT OF ORDER sign hung which once
finished with the words FOR CLEANING but had been slashed below the word ORDER. A
scream and THUD shook the door and made one of the reporters stop reviewing his fight
notes. He reached for the door but a desperate yell came from a short distance beyond
the door.
"Don't!! I promise you, opening that door is a bad idea!"
The man's hand pulled back of its own volition. He'd seen enough on (and around)
Niytyole Island not to take a warning in that tone lightly. There was another rumbling
from the other side of the door.
"What, in the name of the Storm Sea, is going on in there?"
The diminutive young woman who approached rapidly but with just enough decorum to
claim she wasn't running, panted, "Ren... ren... reno..." She paused with a hand on
the door and bent down for a few seconds. "Renovations."
The man stared at the woman in disbelief as a section of wall popped like a dropped
hard candy at festival shattering against a cobblestone. Her eyes darted to the spot
and met his as she straightened.
"That is what I was told to tell anyone who asked by no less than our new Lord
Protector and 3-time Duelmaster."
A howl of pain pierced the door.
"And I'm thinking that's as much as I or anyone else will want to know."

A few hours later, Sandy Claws stood in front of the Misfit Toy Makers' estate. Her
hands looked puffy and there was a residue of magic which seemed of a healing nature
around her. Having given the obligatory introductions and congratulations to the other
significant personages of this round's fights, she shifted her speech.
"And now, I'd like to officially announce that as my first public proclamation as Lord
Protector, I have commissioned a complete renovation of the Duelmasters' Throne Room!
Demolition of the existing one seemed mandatory with the extent of the... the damage
and rot already in evidence. In fact, the demolition began already! A special... a...
team began that process a few hours ago..."

In the crowd a women entering her middle years snickered and turned to a man who held
her hand.
"Yeah, the other Misfits," she whispered.
The man's eyes popped wide.
She continued, "Yes, apparently word got to the Duelmaster about her teammates hiring
a conjurer to summon beasts and such into the throne room to keep her out of it.
Master Beru himself had to step in to calm her down. At least two of them are in one
of those buildings with healers right now."
The man chuckled. A girl of nine or so summers holding his other hand gave him a tug
and whined, "Papa? What's funny papa?"

"And I am told it should be quite a sight to see when it is finished in a few months.
Unless someone knows of some arcane sort who might help speed up that process.
"As for myself, I will fight one more time here in NIYTYOLE ISLAND to allow Caress of
Steel a last chance at vengeance and then I am off to the ISLE. Of particular note, I
have broken Master Beru's curse of the Aimed Blow, becoming his first Lord Protector
in this fighting style.
"I would name an heir to my leadership in my stable of warriors, but The Bumble seems
to be the most mature. This hardly seems fair to The Bumble or to the rest of our
community."

SPY REPORT
They keep me bound to this rock and think it tames my tongue. Fools. The sea still
speaks through me, and this week it spoke of blood and broken oaths. Some of you fools
believe the Dark Arena is mercy.
First, the crown of Niytyole Island. Anneli sits upon the Duelmaster's throne now,
prying it loose from Blackberry Thorn's grasp, in a long, grinding fight. No poetry in
it, just endurance and teeth. A TP queen ruling by stubborn survival. I've seen worse
monarchs wear finer hats. Our old Duelmaster, Sandy Claws, is leaving this island for
another in the advanced arenas. She leaves with another win notched on her mast.
The sands themselves shifted. The Wasting Field clawed its way to the top team spot
this turn at 3-2-1, while Cruel Nights surged like a tide with knives in it, posting a
turn best 4-1-1. Somewhere below deck, Dark Mechanicum proved again they are louder
than they are lethal, wobbling through a losing week like drunk sailors who missed the
dock.
If you smelled fear on the wind, that was the Misfit Toy Makers, the most avoided team
this turn. Those hobbits might be aged, but they can still run, as the Old Hobbits
scurried away from MTM like ship rats fleeing a galley fire. Meanwhile, boldness still
lives as Bloody Belle reached up the ladder and took Quillan Shade clean, a reminder
that courage still cuts deeper than caution.
Now the flotsam, or bodies for you land-lovers. Don't look away. The Dark Arena fed
well this week. Glar Valech, AA-Bot2, Donner, and Fish Egg all vanished, screaming
into the dark, and that is just the start. On the main sands, Sir Palentio carved down
Joe Fabulous in a fight worth remembering, and Field Keepsname ended Ki Keelhaul so
narrowly you could almost hear the gods arguing over it. Bloodfeuds were honored,
revenges paid, and some debts written in names that won't be spoken again.
Sharpen your steel, managers. The island is restless, and I'm still watching for my
prison, perched above the arena. If they ever loosen the hold, I'll remind you all
what a real storm looks like.
