He was disappointed in his team's showing in the last couple of turns. Truth be told, he knew that was his fault. He had simply been too busy to properly manage his team. If not for his enjoyment in disappointing the Ravaging Lords on a regular basis, he would probably sell the team and come back to the sport when he had more time. But seeing General Girlpants pull his hair out and screaming like a mad man every time a Stormbringer slapped around one of his Ravaged Queens was simply too good to miss. "Must be a hilarious thought," boomed a deep voice from behind Rake. "I trust it's not me you're snickering at." Rake rose and turned to greet the speaker. "Ah, my old friend, I'm glad you could make it." Standing in the doorway dressed in his full plate armor was the Hammer, a long- time arena manager and the guest the Rake was waiting on. "What was so funny that you had your owner's box shaking 'cause you were laughing so hard?" the Hammer asked. "Once again I say that I hope your laughter is not at my expense," he stated, leveling his stern gaze on the Rake. Rake laughed again. "Hardly, my friend. I was thinking about the time about a year ago when my Storm Bringers went 3-0 against the Ravaged Queens and took the duelmastership. Even the Hammer, normally stern and reserved, cracked a grin that turned into chuckles as he remembered what the Rake was referring to. General Ikillyu was yelling and shaking his fist in his drunken rage and fell out of his owner's box thirty feet to the arena sands. "Remember wondering how he survived the fall?" Rake asked. "And the look on the arenamaster's face?" Hammer asked. Rake nodded. It was classic. "He got up and still had his beer mug in his hand, stumbling around and yelling incoherently." Rake wiped away tears of laughter. "Remember, that's when he got the nickname General Girlpants due to his unfortunate shortcomings." Hammer nodded. "Okay, okay, enough laughter. You know I don't enjoy humor at the expense of others," Hammer stated. "What's so important that you requested I come all the way out here?" "Okay, okay, I asked you to come out here so I could talk you into reactivating your team." A flash of irritation flashed across Hammer's face. "You could have just asked me that in a letter," he stated. "Yeah, but I thought I'd have a better chance in talking you into it face to face," Rake replied. "You'll 'talk me into' nothing," Hammer growled. "I'll reactivate if I choose to or I won't, and no smooth-talking swashbuckler is gonna make up my mind for me. Besides, this island's dead, no money here anymore." "Calm down, my large friend, I wouldn't say Niatoli is dead." "Dying, then," Hammer cut in. "Yes, but dying is not dead," Rake replied. "Niatoli was dying ten years ago until a new manager by the name of Hammer went on a very productive recruiting mission and brought in twenty teams. You can do it again, my friend." Hammer sat in silence, thinking about what the Rake said. It was true what he said, but that was a lot of work. Did he really want to do it again? Would it be worth it? Meanwhile, the fights started. The Rake's good humor ended as he watched Head Hunter's scimitar shatter against Ranger's shield. Again, he thought. Another weapon break. "That's been happening to me a lot lately," Rake said, "and all against the Ravaged Queens." "Sounds like you have a problem," Hammer said. Indeed, Rake thought. More broken weapons in the past few turns than I've had in my entire career. He narrowed his eyes as he stared across the arena to the General's owner's box and watched as General Ikillyu crazily jumped up and down and chugged his beer in one swallow when Ranger finally won the fight. "Could that idiot have found a way to replace my weapons with weakened ones?" Rake wondered out loud. Hammer shrugged. "Like I said, seems you have a problem, or bad luck." Rake nodded and they watched the rest of the fights. The General was having a real good time and did a lot of dancing. Finally the championship fight came. The Rake's fighter Pitt was challenging The Mongol for the duelmaster's crown. The fight started and was over in less than a minute. Pitt destroyed Mongol and became the new champ. No surprise there, and Rake's humor didn't improve. "Well, I have to go," Hammer stated. "Congratulations on another champion." And he walked out. Rake stared across at General Ikillyu (who was beating his head against a wall) and again asked himself if that idiot found a way to switch his weapons. From the shadows stepped out a lithe figure. "Do you need my services?" asked a melodic female voice. "Find out if I have a problem or I'm just unlucky," Rake replied. "Of course, lover," was the humorous reply. And the figure slid away. Rake grimaced, knowing her services were never cheap. He continued to sit in silence and watched as the hoi polloi filed out. A last look at General Girlpants lightened his mood as he recalled the General falling out of his box, and once gain laughter rolled out of the owner's box. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 619): KEEL HAULER of SEA DOGS (One-Armed Bandit, mgr.) Looks like this will be the last time you'll be seeing me. I'm hoping to be able to defend against a Ravished Queen in my last battle here on Niatoli. Maybe one of them will have the stones to challenge me before I go instead of all avoiding me again. Your Duelmaster, Pitt SPY REPORT I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit the road, Debby Tonte. NIATOLI ISLAND needs a spyreport." Oh, well. MVP award for CAROLINA LILY? THE SEWING CIRCLE's proud of her after beating RANGER and getting 22 points. Talk about yer big time losers! RANGER got smashed by CAROLINA LILY, and lost 18 points! This Duelmaster is like something else! PITT stopped M. CHARDINEE dead in his tracks! Who was the wiseguy that said NIATOLI ISLAND's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Don't Drop Inn? Don't look at me! AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. Like, is THE MONGOL popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of NIATOLI ISLAND! He's got a 12-13-2, is that good? Some fights are really unfair. How do you think KOBALT feels about being challenged by DARK JOURNEY, 25 points above him? If DARK JOURNEY can't beat a warrior 25 points below herself, that she CHALLENGED, she oughtta be selling food in the stands! See if I ever talk to TEMPEST again! THE MONGOL was so low when She challenged she. Hhmph! TEMPEST beat THE MONGOL. No surprise about that. Really I'm not surprised TEMPEST would do such a scummy thing, either. Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give it a break? What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!! Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand wash. I gotta leave. NIATOLI ISLAND is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much! Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! We hope you're all looking forward to the tournament and that we will see you there! Daydream Believer You once thought of me, As a white knight on a steed. Now you know how happy I can be... It's true. I'm gone. I've punched my ticket to Immortality and I'm off to the Isle. I know a lot of you are wondering what it is about me that has made me so successful. I wish I knew for sure. I think it has more to do with intangibles (knack) than it does with design, bonuses and favorites. I'll let you decide. Sigh...I prefer to think my physical characteristics are ideally suited for a finesse style. As for my bases, I know they aren't much to look at. After all, I am a PR. I'm fortunate to be blessed where I need it the most--attack and parry. Okay, so I've got nice bases with bonuses in the right spots. What about favorites? Did I know them in advance or did I change them? The answer is no, I had no idea what they were for sure until I recieved my graduation announcement. I would be happy to tell you what my favorites are but I don't think my clone, Jumpinjack Flash, would be very happy with me if I did. Let's just say that from the moment I stepped on the sands as a Rookie I used the same strategy in EVERY fight. The only thing I ever changed was armor (early on vs. TP's) and attack/defend locations. That should give those of you who have faced me more than once something to think about. You may be interested to know that I am all natural. I haven't had a prize of any type used on me. I'm a freak of nature. It just goes to show you never know when a guy like me will walk into your guildhouse looking for work as a gladiator. It's up to you to spot the potential and nuture it along. I'm going to list my tourney results and records versus each style. It isn't meant to be a brag--I just thought you might find it interesting and a lot easier than looking it up yourself. Enjoy! I was 1-5 vs Marv, 0-1 vs Marv Jr and 0-3 vs Soulsnare.
