They had insisted that the maintenance man let them in, because the arena was the most defensible single structure now that the demons and monsters had gotten into the town. Now what? Huw had organized them to get here, but he'd gone off somewhere right afterward. "What we should do," Llew Llaw muttered, not quite to himself, "is get out of town while we can. If we can. Let the demons have it." Ma Gog hit him upside the head. "You're a toad, Llew," she said. "But you could keep it to yourself." "This town is dead," Llew Llaw answered. "Why should I risk my life to protect the shell?" He brushed aside the comment Ma Gog was about to make. "You heard what Huw said, there are even demons and monsters in the caves! They really are everywhere, and not enough people to fight 'em. We should leave while we can." Ma Gog turned around and hit him, knocking him sprawling. "You don't say those things. You don't even THINK those things, or else you get far away from me." "That's easy to say, Ma," Tavis Cadfalson said, "but if we're going to stay and fight, we need a plan." He paused, listening to the distant, confused sound of fighting and destruction. "And information." One of the standbys, Marid Lifraj Chardinee, emerging from a hallway leading into the bowels of the arena, heard that and groaned. "By the One and the Three, do NOT tell me that we're going to spend hours and even DAYS scouting and gathering information!" "No such thing," Tavis answered, "but we could at least look out a window from one of the upper levels. Maybe keep someone there to watch, even." "What would be the point with no way to signal?" Ma Gog asked. "Take the steward's horn up and use it for signaling," Jamoak said, showing an interest for the first time. To his credit, he did not immediately suggest himself for that safe job distant from the fighting that was or would be happening. "Work out a simple code for go right, go left, go forward, or come back, maybe?" "Something like that," Tavis agreed. "Let's take a look at things, see where the enemies are, how many, what kind. See what we could maybe hope to do. Whether there are people we could rescue, if we sallied." Chardinee nodded. "Count me in." He paused as a particularly inhuman howl echoed over the town. "At least, against monsters. I won't fight demons, mind, but monsters, yes." Near Zensu: "This is the most annoying demon--if it is a demon--that I have ever not-quite- encountered," Crystal Fireblade muttered. "What's it waiting for?" "Maybe we need to send it an engraved invitation, doll," Raoul said. "How should I know what it's waiting for? Demons and stuff, that's for managers to deal with." "They aren't here." "Shows their good sense." Raoul removed his hat and peered around the huge stump they had chosen to cover this pause in their retreat. Nothing moved in the long aisles of the forest except the slowly falling leaves, which were now mixed with snow. He pulled back, peered into his hat for a moment as a seer might peer into a crystal ball, then sighed and put it on his head. "I think we're in a lot of trouble here," he said quietly. "More than earlier?" The Lady Knight was doing her own surveying. "Yeah. You notice any squirrels, doll? Birds? Insects, even?" Crystal didn't have to look again. She knew what she would see, what he had seen. Silence and stillness. Of course, it was always still at the beginning of a snowfall, but...not like this. This was different. "Good point." Her hand went to her sword, but she didn't draw it. She glanced at her companion and raised an eyebrow. He nodded and began to move to the right, keeping low. The stump they'd been using for cover was part of a deadfall, and he was able to crawl along the fallen trunk, which was three feet thick. Crystal kept a watch along their back-trail until Raoul had time to get into a new position. Then she moved to the left, behind a thicket of close-growing saplings. They were choked with leaves that had died but not fallen. Not cracking twigs or crunching fallen leaves took most of her attention for a moment. When she looked up, the demon was there. If it was a demon. It was about eight feet tall, snouted and scaled, with a muscular tail. Roughly man-shaped, it was wearing a harness and kilt of studded leather, and carrying a short, broad-bladed sword. No aura of demonic power. If she'd met it in an arena town, she would have said, 'just another alien gladiator'. Maybe it should be classed as a monster, rather than a demon. Ah...make that 'monsters', plural. The first one was followed by another, and a third, fourth, fifth...that seemed to be all. It was enough. She was good, Raoul was good, but five monsters? Well, maybe they could handle five of these things, but it was going to take every bit of skill and luck they had. And for a beginning, they had the luck that these things didn't seem to be skilled in the woods. Limited tracking ability, so far as she could tell. Yes, the creatures were still on their trail, but some hunter truly at home in the woods would have been more suspicious. These lizards were coming straight on, with no apparent awareness of the possibility of an ambush. Maybe they wouldn't be so hard after all. No, that didn't follow. A poor woodsman could still be a deadly fighter. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 533): PUSS of ARENA FELINES (Garfield, mgr.) DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. I was surprised to see a dwarf above-ground, given that there are reliable reports of battle in the caves. But then, he's a Khalhums Dwarf, so maybe he doesn't care about the Murska tunnels? Morpeth SPY REPORT It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last week's fights. Hey everybody, watch out for MR. FIXIT, who flew up 21 points in the rankings after mashing HYPER VIPER like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. HYPER VIPER was subdued by MR. FIXIT and drops 12 points. Well, everybody's pal MORPETH moved hers record to 17-25-0 by defeating HUCKLE CAT in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 18 recognition points. Can you believe they are paying me 10 gold to deliver this stuff? Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the MURSKA arena. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, KAI would be president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle. Well, there's the manager of the MURSKA giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that 'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some tracks. Its been fun, and I'm sure you enjoyed it (boos). Now that I've got you worked up for Snide Clemens, I'll be leaving-- The Unknown Spymaster DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MORPETH 3862 17 25 0 110 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -TAKE COVER 3870 10 2 3 96 THE BEARS (253) BUMP 'N' JUMP 3929 11 8 1 94 FLIPPERS ARCADE (366) -OH OHLISH OMINAH 3912 11 6 2 93 PHILANTHROPISTS 3 (347) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DINGO DOG 3878 11 2 3 87 BUSY, BUSYTOWN (360) HUCKLE CAT 3874 11 6 0 86 BUSY, BUSYTOWN (360) FATHER CAT 3875 9 2 1 77 BUSY, BUSYTOWN (360) -GARTH THE SEAMITE 3748 15 10 1 69 PHILANTHROPISTS 3 (347) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME KAI 3873 15 20 0 65 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) DALLOW 3872 14 21 1 64 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) DIG DUG 3926 13 8 1 62 FLIPPERS ARCADE (366) VEXED VIKING 3641 9 7 0 62 PHILANTHROPISTS 2 (345) CADAL COONTZ 3901 11 16 0 61 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MR.
