In his experience, which had been extensive, the first thing enemies did when they caught you was take away your weapons. And while his memory of the recent past was a little blurred (damn being hit on the head, it always made problems, not least of which was that right now his head ached ferociously), he did remember very distinctly that some enemy had been involved in his arrival here. Or somewhere that led to here. Just to be on the safe side, he pulled it out of its scabbard to make sure the hilt had a blade attached. Some villains would think it funny to let him assume he had a sword when he didn't. No, it was there. He ran his fingers along the flat of the blade, savoring the smooth, cold steel. If he found something to fight, he could fight it. He hoped he WOULD find someone to fight. He wanted to hit someone. Or choke someone. He flexed his fingers. They were stiff. That would be the cold, he supposed. Faint reddish light rippled across his vision. He had encountered the effects of darkness on sight before now, and knew it was an illusion of some kind. A trick his understimulated eyes were playing on him. He blinked, hoping to clear them, in case something real came along. The light remained. He blinked again. Maybe it was real. He took three eager steps, almost running, and paused. Even if it was real, it could be a trap or just plain dangerous. It took all his willpower, but he slowed his advance. Reddish light, and a faint vibration in the air that would be sound when he got closer. Or maybe this was too low-pitched for his ears. That didn't matter. What was causing it didn't matter, friend or foe, mechanism, or force of nature. It meant he was getting somewhere. And about time! Tankesh hurried onward. Not running, but he hurried. The vibration became sound. Too confused to interpret. Screams, roars, mechanical sounds. Stones hitting other stones. His mind, which seemed to have been wandering in limbo for years, pulled itself together, shook out a few last wrinkles, and began to take in details. There was fire up ahead, and a battle. Sounded like dwarves and some kind of beast or demon, or perhaps a demonic beast. A monster, anyway. Something that had to be destroyed, and he could help. He drew his sword. The tunnel he was in came to an end in the wall of a large cavern, about ten feet off the floor. A river rushed across the center of the floor, with a waterwheel turning in it, and several bridges crossed the stream. Which was now running red with blood as some of the dwarves below were thrown against the wheel, gathered up by the paddles, and forced down under the water and into some hidden mechanism. The demonic beast was between him and the wheel, and it was that monster which was throwing the dwarves to their destruction. It was hard to see the thing clearly. There was haze in the cavern, but that wasn't the real problem. His eyes and his mind rejected the shape of the creature. They insisted that what he was seeing was not real, could not be real. Nothing could be shaped like that. It was not an experience he'd encountered often, but he knew what it meant. This...thing was distorting space-time around itself, was only partly in this world. It might be possible to damage it, maybe even enough to make it withdraw, but it couldn't be destroyed here. Too bad. He felt like destroying something. He squinted at the creature, trying to make out some useful detail. It was wrapped, or embedded, in red light that pulsed and flickered and throbbed, suggesting flame. And heat seemed to be coming from it. What would happen if the part of it in this world, in this cave, was forced into the stream? It would probably explode. An explosion confined to this cave, which was big but not THAT big, could be hazardous. Did he care? Well...yeah. And so would the dwarves trying to fight the thing down there. Still, he couldn't just ignore the situation. Okay. First point, he was too far away to do anything. No easy way down from this ledge that he could see, and it was only ten feet...he could jump that. Tankesh sheathed his sword and jumped, landing cat-like on all fours, then springing up. It was HOT down here near the monster. A quick glance showed that there were no dwarves left alive on this side of the stream. A dwarf on the other side was waving sword and shield, probably trying to get his attention. He moved sideways as far from the monster as he could get and waved back. No telling what he wanted. The dwarf turned a side toward him and moved along the river to face him. Ah... what SHE wanted, then. That was definitely a breast plate. Even at the far end of the cave, there was thirty or forty feet of underground river between them, and the noise level was high. She seemed to be saying... "Force the monster into the wheel." Meaning into the river, too. "It'll explode!" he yelled back. "Into the WHEEL, not the river!" * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 534): PUSS of ARENA FELINES (Garfield, mgr.) Fare you well here in the future, and don't let the demons in the streets eat you. Morpeth P.S. Statistics and favorites available upon request. SPY REPORT Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in MURSKA this turn, and let's start with a look at some of the teams. THE BEARS stable has parlayed this turn's 2-0-0 into a 3 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 4th place. Good work, guys! And let's see, CADAL COONTZ fought HUCKLE CAT and gained 27 points and contributed to CHILDREN OF LLYR's 3-2-0. HUCKLE CAT has lost to CADAL COONTZ, falling 23 points, while helping make BUSY, BUSYTOWN a 2-2-0 turn. TAKE COVER challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone CHILDREN OF LLYR's warrior. And all eyes were on TAKE COVER this turn as he ascended to the throne of Duelmaster. MURSKA has a new victor! By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The Dragon's Hangover? I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher friend of mine assures me this is true. PHILANTHROPISTS 3 has cause to stand tall, as they were MURSKA's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who avoided PHILANTHROPISTS 3 stable the most? Believe it or not, it was THE BEARS. Anyone surprised? A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare to fight bravely. Always good to rest in MURSKA, but never good to wear out my welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in MURSKA again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TAKE COVER 3870 11 2 3 108 THE BEARS (253) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BUMP 'N' JUMP 3929 12 8 1 103 FLIPPERS ARCADE (366) -OH OHLISH OMINAH 3912 11 6 2 93 PHILANTHROPISTS 3 (347) DINGO DOG 3878 12 2 3 92 BUSY, BUSYTOWN (360) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME FATHER CAT 3875 10 2 1 89 BUSY, BUSYTOWN (360) CADAL COONTZ 3901 12 16 0 88 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) DIG DUG 3926 14 8 1 71 FLIPPERS ARCADE (366) -GARTH THE SEAMITE 3748 15 10 1 69 PHILANTHROPISTS 3 (347) DALLOW 3872 15 21 1 68 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME KAI 3873 15 21 0 66 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) HUCKLE CAT 3874 11 7 0 63 BUSY, BUSYTOWN (360) -VEXED VIKING 3641 9 7 0 62 PHILANTHROPISTS 2 (345) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME Q*BERT 3928 14 7 4 56 FLIPPERS ARCADE (366) MR.
