Murska:

Huw paused outside the arena and looked down at the town. How to find Tankesh?
He'd been spirited away by what was probably a demon of some kind, at the least, by a
creature summoned and controlled by magic. That was a clue that he would probably
need magic to find out where Tankesh was and to get to him. A treacherous voice in
the back of his mind suggested that he barely knew the elf and had more
responsibility to Murska than to a virtual stranger, but he ignored it. All that
"greatest good for the greatest number" business was a trick. At its best, it worked
out to the greatest mediocrity of life for the greatest number, AND it deprived
individuals of responsibility for their own lives. All of which was probably as
unreliable a guide as the "greatest good" thing, because life had to be lived on a
case by case basis.
And right now, his case and responsibility was that he'd made a pact of
friendship and aid with a man who was carried off by a demon, so he'd better do what
he could to help HIM.
But Murska WAS a mess right now, and if he saw a chance to do anyone a bit of
good on the way to the magicians' quarter, he'd do it.
With a nod of relief at having that settled in his own mind, he set off at a
trot. He knew where the magicians lived, most of them. They had, well, not a
"quarter" exactly, but an area of concentration. He even knew a couple of magicians
in a casual way. They lived--oh, damn--over there where the fires looked worst.
Well, he was a gladiator, which meant he was tough and not distinguished by concern
for his own safety. He set off at a trot.
To a determined pedestrian, the streets offered little impediment despite the
chaotic look of things. He detoured twice around fires and once around an
intersection that had been turned into an abattoir for a group of citizens who had
turned on a pair of monsters. The Murskans were armed with household knives, a rug-
beater, two hatchets, and a steel-spoked umbrella, and they were getting the better
of monsters characterized by the size gorillas crossed with buffalo, impressive
fangs, patchy fur, and evident stupidity (i.e. they didn't run away). Huw grinned
and waved as he hurried past, and an old woman waved her umbrella back at him, then
returned to beating the nearest monster about the head and shoulders. He delayed
once to help chop up something that seemed to be all tentacles--no body that he could
see, and definitely no head, and once to rescue a cat from a burning building. All
of this seemed to take a long time, but in fact did not. It only took him half an
hour to reach the Street of Wands.
     Where he stopped.
It might better be called the Street of Burning Brands, now. Or the Hall of
Flames.
The arson in other parts of Murska had been haphazard, or even accidental.
This...had to be deliberate. Someone didn't want magicians interfering with their
fun-and-games.
Huw looked down the flaming corridor helplessly. What could one ordinary man do
against that?
Something touched his arm and he whirled, sword ready.
It was a small, scorched man who skipped back nimbly, both hands held in plain
sight. "You're that gladiator who visited Tregith, aren't you?"
Huw frowned. He didn't like being recognized. Anything happening around here
now was suspicious, especially if it wasn't something he expected. And Tregith...
that was the magician he knew best, not that he knew the man all that well. It all
made him feel paranoid. "Yeah. Why?"
"His house is burning, we can't get near it at all, but we think he's still
alive in there. If you could--?"
     "Walk into a burning building?"
"Well...not exactly." The man waved his soot-smudged hands. "We have to HURRY,
Tregith can't live for long in that smoke!"
Against his better judgment, Huw found himself following the man. It was
probably his urgency that did the trick. "How 'not exactly'?" he asked.
"The roof! It isn't burning yet--wasn't, anyway, when I came out here to find
someone to help. But there's a monster on the roof, and while I might..." he
hesitated, "well, I MIGHT jump from one roof to another to rescue a friend, a monster
is more than I can face." He glanced over his shoulder apologetically. "I'm a
coward about monsters, I admit it, okay? I probably should have taken a, what do
they call it? A twelve-step program to overcome the fear, but I didn't, and it's too
late now. Will you help?"
Huw sighed. He should probably say something to this little magician to make
him feel better about his fear of monsters, but he just didn't have the energy for
it. "Yes, I'll help."

                                      SPY REPORT

It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! Practice pays for HUCKLE CAT, who pummelled VETERAN MERCENARY, to
pocket 17 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, THE USEROUS MERCHANT was
winsome, after beating MR. FIXIT and seeing him lose 8 points. Like a flirtacious
debutante, MURSKA's Duelmaster TAKE COVER found himself the man of the hour, being
"invited to dance" 2 times! Duelmaster TAKE COVER from THE BEARS is going for the
gold, as he challenged FLIPPERS ARCADE's BUMP 'N' JUMP. Ooh, the excitement! Those
who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by BUMP 'N' JUMP, of FLIPPERS
ARCADE, who despite a 12-9-1 couldn't overcome MURSKA's Number 1. Word has it one
team in MURSKA is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll
bet it works.
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Like a horde of jackals fleeing from the lion, so
did the "warriors" in MURSKA avoid THE BEARS. Like a pup with its tail between its
legs, BUSY, BUSYTOWN scurried away from THE BEARS. Oh, the shame! As a confidence
booster, FATHER CAT challenged DALLOW, down 21 points. Do you also slay vicious
rodents in your spare time, FATHER CAT? FATHER CAT overcame DALLOW with a point
difference of 21. So this is what MURSKA calls a duel. This will make an
interesting tale.
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Oh hard! that
to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
All good things must come to an end. Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards
fat! Do not despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir

The Olympics have arrived!

The Mordanti Olympics, having been gone for six years, have returned to the Mordanti
Alliance, sponsored by Amicitia Primoris. Teams have competed against each other for
recognition and notoriety four times in the past. It is far past time for the fifth
Mordanti Olympics to be held. The Mordanti Olympics shall be held in the Mordant
arena (DM-1) from May 1st (T544) through Oct 30 (T557). There will be a
'registration period' lasting until T543, where teams will be allowed to register by
activating in Mordant and declaring their participation in the personals. Rules will
be posted in the Mordant arena (DM-1) newsletter no later than T543, but shall be
available online before then. An announcement will be made as to where they will be
posted. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.
