Near Zensu:

"I'm just a servant!" the little mage said quickly. "I'm just following
order--!"
Raoul's fingers tightened on his neck again.
     The prisoner squeaked and thrashed.
"You will speak TO THE POINT, or you will die," Crystal said. "I don't much
care which." She nodded for her partner to allow him to speak again.
"Lord Hermes sent me to make sure you don't interfere," he whined. "I didn't
mean you any harm! But Fratsfa and Zensu are going to be attacked almost at once by
demons and things. That's what I heard! I don't know anything about it. *I* don't
do demons and things! I'm just a serv--"
"A worm," Raoul said. "No point in keeping him alive, eh, doll?" He winked at
Crystal.
"No, a useless worm. Still...he should be submitted to the King's Justice in
the proper way. Let usurpers and invaders play about with unrestrained violence. We
shall not stoop to it, we represent a kingdom of laws." She paused, eyeing the
little twerp's terror and hope. He was amazingly repellant. "Still, as a knight in
direct service to His Majesty, I am authorized to deal out summary justice at need,
and we don't have time to oversee a prisoner who will be constantly attempting to
escape...."
"I won't! No escaping, I promise! Please don't kill me!"
It was all Crystal Fireblade could do not to laugh. Not at the worthless little
mage--probably a mere apprentice, come to that--but at Raoul's expression. He looked
like someone who could barely make himself hang onto the greasy little weasel,
someone who would kill him as a simple act to reduce the pollution level. "We dare
not leave him behind," she said. "Even petty spite can be a danger."
"I've got rope in my pack. Tie him up, drag him along, and if he strangles in
the process, I won't weep." Gerfel's Friend shook the worm hard and threw him down,
pulled rope from his backpack, and set to work.
After that, they walked fast for fifteen minutes, until the apprentice mage was
gasping and staggering.
"We'll have to either kill him or leave him, doll," Raoul said quietly to
Crystal. "He can't begin to keep the pace we need."
She nodded. "Even if he hasn't much magic, he probably has some--"
"And he's a worm, through and through. But it goes against the grain to just
kill him out of hand."
Crystal nodded again. "We looped around the settled areas when we were being
chased by those lizards," she said. "But I remember we crossed a grass ride not too
far from here, and it should lead to a village or a manor. If we can get him that
far, we can leave him with people who will watch him."
"And get horses for ourselves, as well," Raoul agreed. "We couldn't make it
Fratsfa in time to do much good, but we might be able to do something at Zensu."

                                      SPY REPORT

Welcome MURSKA. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights have
I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... What's with FARON? He
actually beat BUSY, BUSYTOWN's MR. FIXIT, and walked away with 21 more points from
the fight. CADAL COONTZ was reminded on the sands why BUMP 'N' JUMP is Duelmaster.
Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is
looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports.
MURSKA thinks THE BEARS and their 367-273-26 is too much! If at first you don't
succeed, give up... The bums at BUSY, BUSYTOWN couldn't face the challenges from THE
BEARS! No excuse for that! How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged
warrior, DALLOW! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. Fighting
is a better craft than farming, DALLOW, but you have to pay your dues. Being
challenged by FATHER CAT, 23 points above you, is dues. I have to get this off my
chest. What a low dog, FATHER CAT! He can't set himself up in a real match. I was
sorry to see DALLOW lose. KAI didn't quite know what to make of a challenge he
received from DINGO DOG of BUSY, BUSYTOWN, who is 22 points below him. DINGO DOG
perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he overcame KAI and ended up with 94
recognition points.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. DALLOW, with his forgettable 15-25-1, was put to
death by FATHER CAT in a forgettable match. CHILDREN OF LLYR didn't seem to mind
very much. FATHER CAT had a sure-fire victory when he challenged DALLOW, 23 points
below him. Was anyone really surprised when DALLOW bit it? Here's some advice:
study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty.
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. All work
and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Practice,
practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

A few notes about e-mailed personals:

You may submit personal ads, columns, spotlights, etc. electronically, either via e-
mail to ads at reality dot com (which doesn't need any more spam, thank you) or on
the web at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Ads. When you submit
something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get a
receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination
any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body
of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to
make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see
that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather
simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name
or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti
appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that
may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes
things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all.
If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn. Happy
writing! -- Ed.

To all those lookin' for some easy pickins: I, Elfwine, manager of The Shallowship,
the most feared team in all of Jhelum, invite all who seek wide open spaces for pubs
and other such establishments of limited debauchery, to visit this deserted city and
help me clear up some of the dust. I'm just about ready to have my guys face off
against each other to get some new action. Guess I'd better join a tournament or
something...hmmmm, there's a thought.
