Redfox had an impulse to hug someone--Young Joan or Necroma for choice--but hesitated. Joan he knew slightly, and she was not one to allow liberties. She grinned and hugged him quickly, then the Blackwind had no such qualms and threw a friendly arm around Necroma. He looked at Wolf and Lord Malcorn. "What happens now?" Malcorn looked across the valley at the Door. It was huge, twenty or thirty feet tall and nearly as wide, the two halves standing open on flame-shot darkness. No living creatures were visible. "Now we shut the Door," he said, "and there will be re "Should you say that?" Necroma asked. "Expectations shape what we meet in the Spirit Land, and you could be creating trouble just by expecting it." "Some trouble exists here without a mortal's expectations," Uncle Wolf said. "And we are no longer precisely in the Spirit Lands. Here in the Valley, the rules change again." She groaned. "I really hate that. I wish the rules would just... be what they are, whatever they are, and not change when someone takes two steps in a different direction! How can you plan anything if--" "You develop a knack for it," the old shaman said, "or you get into a different line of work." Blackwind saw that the young woman was going to argue further and spoke quickly to cut her off; they didn't need arguments here and now. "One thing I've been wondering. I understand about the different routes to make sure at least some of us got he "You would have figured something out," Uncle Wolf said. "Each of you was chosen--by me or by circumstances--because you are a person who finishes any job he begins. Or she begins," he added quickly, seeing Young Joan frown. Lord Malcorn sighed and straightened, seeming even taller now than his seven-and-a-half foot height. Darker than his black hair and swarthy skin had seemed when Blackwind had seen him on the streets back in Malcorn. There, he had been affectionatel "They're coming," he said. Without thought, responding to the same trained impulse, every gladiator present drew his or her sword, turning to face outward from their group. Blackwind more than half expected to see floods demons and monsters pouring toward them from every direction. If so, they must be invisible, all he could see were the shadows that filled the valley. He squinted. "Is it my imagination, or is it getting darker here?" That would be bad. Darkness would make it harder to fight. "Valley of Shadow," Math op Owain said. "We should have realized--" "So you should," Uncle Wolf answered. "In this place, the shadows are as dangerous as what casts them." "More dangerous," Lord Malcorn corrected. The old shaman shrugged and nodded. "Perhaps. At that level of danger, the distinction is unimportant." "How do we fight shadows?" Redfox asked. "You must have had something in mind, or you wouldn't have drawn us here." "The light is behind the... creatures that cast the shadows," Wolf pointed out. "That makes the shadows advance toward you, ahead of the creatures. You must make of yourselves lights to drive the shadows back on their creators." "How can we--?" "No, 'Fox, I think I see what he means!" Math drew the gladiators aside. "Come over out of the way, and I'll tell you. Let them deal with the Door." "He's right," Necroma said before Math could begin his explanation. "We *are* lights if we know it." She paused, selecting words. "Here, even if it isn't exactly the Spirit Lands, the spirit is what matters the most. Sure, we're here physically-- and we can die physically--but just as the body dominates in the Mortal World, so the spirit dominates here. If our spirits are strong and bright, they'll be like lights here!" "That's easy to *say*, and it sounds good," Blackwind objected, "but what are we supposed to *do*?" "It's like... ah! Like the meditation exercises they teach us on the Isle, to increase our Will or our Wit," Math said. "That kind of focus, but we concentrate on light and life and warmth--" "Well put," Necroma said. "And we'd better do it right now." "Not forgetting," Young Joan was actually beginning to glow as she concentrated, "that we will have to deal with physical creatures once we have vanquished the shadows." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 652): HOMESTAR of HOMESTAR & CO (Otto X Frothingslosh, mgr.) SPY REPORT Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day, I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! Practice pays for LYNN O'HAREC, who pummelled EVER SEE JULY, to pocket 20 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, STARGAZER was winsome, after beating ST MAGDALENE and seeing her lose 14 points. Well, Duelmaster PELICAN EEL Dark Arena Challenged DARK ARENA's MOUNTAIN TROLL. Is a 13-4-1 good enough? PELICAN EEL successfully staved off a grab for the roses by MOUNTAIN TROLL of DARK ARENA. Does MURSKA have no one talented enough to dethrone him? Word has it one team in MURSKA is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works. My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter. But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! To quell some nasty rumors, the guys in SEA DOGS are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em. The warriors of SEA DOGS found their efforts at combat frustrated as ON THE ROCKS apparently had more important things to do than fight. Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and MAIRE MCANGUS is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't CHILDREN OF LLYR proud! Willing to win at any cost is ICICLE, who challenged MAIRE MCANGUS, 11 points junior. Our sympathies, MAIRE MCANGUS! I thought ICICLE showed great skill and promise when it overcame MAIRE MCANGUS. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! MOUNTAIN TROLL in the Dark Arena wasn't enough for PELICAN EEL of SEA DOGS. Maybe that certain serving girl(?) at The Fire Dragon Inn will be! More than one waitress at The Fire Dragon Inn was spilling more drinks than usual last week, as EVER SEE JULY's early demise became known. What will URBAN JUNGLE do??? Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen into an unconscious stupor. All good things must come to an end. As the seasons change, and the creatures of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. Like a mixed metaphor, and an overtaxed simile, I now bid MURSKA farewell-- Novgorodny Vir DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME ICICLE 4118 14 11 1 113 URBAN JUNGLE (259) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BRENDAL 4082 20 25 0 102 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) -GRINCH 4184 11 2 1 97 BAD GUYS (381) SCAPA 4198 8 3 0 96 ON THE ROCKS (175) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SAZERAC 4185 10 8 1 89 ON THE ROCKS (175) MAIRE MCANGUS 4105 19 21 1 87 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) STARGAZER 4130 11 4 0 86 SEA DOGS (377) TAMRA KAI 4109 18 17 0 77 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) ST MAGDALENE 4144 13 13 0 76 ON THE ROCKS (175) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LORD SNOW 4200 7 3 0 66 URBAN JUNGLE (259) HAMMERHEAD 4129 14 11 2 65 SEA DOGS (377) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME KAILIE RHINN 4195 4 10 0 54 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) ABEL BROWN 4191 4 5 0 48 SEA DOGS (377) -VOLDEMORT 4194 5 1 0 44 BAD GUYS (381) -SECOND WATCH 4166 7 4 0 43 SEA DOGS (377) -TED BUNDY 4180 6 3 0 37 BAD GUYS (381) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BANFF 4203 5 3 3 33 ON THE ROCKS (175) DECEMBRE 4197 7 4 1 30 URBAN JUNGLE (259) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -THE JOKER 4176 5 6 0 27 BAD GUYS (381) -WICKED WITCH 4179 5 5 0 25 BAD GUYS (381) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LYNN O'HAREC 4214 1 0 1 20 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) OBAN 4213 1 0 0 16 ON THE ROCKS (175) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn. Welcome Oban! -- Bartender, mgr On the Rocks Jugger -- You are right. I have had some luck with the RUGs here in Murska and have gotten really great warriors like Sazerac and Scapa. However, whenever I don't get a great rollup I always seem to get a really lousy one. There's just nothing in between. -- Bartender Icicle -- I await your challenge. I guess it's the only way for you to run away from the other challenger champs. -- Banff Tamra Kai -- Ha. Ha. -- St. Magdalene, parry-rip style-master Pelican Eel -- Not a very smart thing to do, killing Loony, if you want there to be any teams left in the arena. But I guess you don't care, being invited and all. Congrats on that, by the way. -- Bartender Khalums Dwarf -- Geez. We will GIVE a Free Rollup to any manager willing to agree to fight in Arvat for the next 10 turns. We have a number of VERY solid arena teams stockpiled, and while we don't promise tournament godlings, we are certain we can come up with teams with 3, 4 or even 5 solid arena warriors to start out with. In addition we'll honor any no-challenge requests by relatively new managers to help you get off on the right foot. If interested, please contact the Devil Advocates via Diplo or contact theDarkOne via IM on the www DOT reality DOT com site. We will even give a choice of teams available if requested. 21 August 2010 *********************************************************************** *********************************************************************** ALLIANCES OF ALASTARI *********************************************************************** *********************************************************************** *********************************************************************** COME ONE, COME ALL MEET NEW FRIENDS AND FORM NEW TEAMS WIN ROLLUP CERTS AND RSI SPONSORED PRIZES ************************************************************************************* THE TURF WAR IS HERE AGAIN!!!!! ************************************************************************************* *TURF WAR VII RULES* Starting Nov 2010 (12 turns) Bring acclaim and glory to the North Fork (DM47) arena. Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances created solely to compete in the Turf War! To participate, each alliance must: 1. Announce the Captain of the alliance in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter. 2. Indicate in the newsletter which Captain/alliance you will join. 3. Announcements made on the D2 Forums or elsewhere will not be accepted. Captains are responsible for: 1. Verifying/authorizing, in the North Fork newsletter those who wish to participate under the banner of their alliance. (Lack of participant indication of joining and/or lack of lack of Captain confirmation will delay a team's participation in the Turf War.) 2. Distribution of prizes should their alliance win the Turf War. 3. Submit two (2) RSI Roll-Up Certificates to participate. (Note: Captains may, if they wish, submit certs for all potential members of their alliance.) Participating managers who are not Captains must: 1. Submit two (2) RSI Roll-Up Certificates to participate (Unless already submitted by Captain. Note: extras will not be returned, but will go into the winning pool of prizes.) 2. Announce their intent to compete with manager name, team name, and alliance they will represent in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter. Announcement made on the D2 Forums will not be accepted. a. No scores will be tabulated until an RSI Gift Certificate is received, and participant indication and captain confirmation are posted in the North Fork newsletter. NO EXCEPTIONS. b. Before a manager can compete, he/she must declare themselves in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter as stated above AND be verified in the newsletter by the alliance Captain they will represent. c. Only one (1) team per player may compete. No multiple teams or aliases will be allowed. Violations will result in immediate disqualification (including team point adjustments) from the Turf War (so be sure to take any multiple teams OFF of Team Maintenance and be certain not to run any other team warriors). d. Scoring will NOT be retroactive for teams/alliances that do not properly declare or get captain confirmation or fail to send a Gift Certificate by Turn 1. In other words, if your Gift Certificate is not received until Turn 3 of the Turf War, and you have fought on Turns 1 and 2, your score will not begin until Turn 3. All conditions must be met before scoring will begin--declaration, verification, and Gift Certificate received. e. No declarations or verifications will be accepted after Turn 5 of the Turf War. f. For purposes of scoring, the moderators will score the Turf War and settle any and all disputes as they arise. Their decisions will be final. (Note: the intent is to have a very thorough set of rules so that few decisions, if any, are required from the moderators.) Scoring will be as follows for Fights: Win Loss Kill Die Up Challenge +2 -2 +5 -5 Down Challenge 0 -2 0 -5 Match Up +1 -1 +1 -5 Bloodfeud Challenge (Up or Down) +2 -5 +5 -10 Champion ** x2 x2 x2 x2 Dark Arena* +10 -5 xx xx Tournament Death*** -5 Halfway (6 round total) best alliance win/loss percentage **** Final (12 round total) alliance w/l% percentage **** *After 2nd win in DA, warrior scores no additional points for wins, ** A Champion's double score applies to his score only -- not to the opponent. *** No warrior may be substituted without the proper use of the DA or arena death or death in a tournament. There must be a maximum of five only on a team at any point and time. (The penalty for such substitution is -10 points.) Points awarded for tournament participation are 5 for any entrant, 15 for a TV and 25 for a TC. Death in a tournament negates any tournament points gained and results in a-5 score. ***** Halfway points scored are 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 5, 5 (etc) for 1st, 2nd, 3rd (etc). (to qualify for any of these points the alliance must have fought 75% of its possible fights.) Final 12 Round points scored are 40, 30, 20, 15, 10, 5, 5, 5 (etc) for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd (etc). (to qualify for any of these points the alliance must have fought 75% of its possible fights.) Special Scoring Considerations for the Turf War are as follows: Spy Report mention (team name only) +2 1. No matter how many mentions or stylemasters, an individual team can score only +2 in each category per round Style Master +2 1. No matter how many mentions or stylemasters, an individual team can score only +2 in each category per round Duelmaster +2 Champions: 1. A Champion may be declared, but one is not mandatory. 2. Only one Champion allowed per manager at any given time. 3. Champions that graduate or are killed by another warrior in the arena, but not the Dark Arena, may be replaced. 4. Champions must have fought at least one previous fight in the North Fork (DM47 arena) to be able to be declared a champion. Bloodfeuds: 1. Bloodfeuds will score points on all four (4) turns. 2. There is no limit to which warrior may bloodfeud or how often. Tournament Considerations: 1. Tournament participation is ALLOWED and encouraged. 2. Tournament Victors won during the course of the contest will gain a one (1) time bonus of 25 15 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a warrior(s) wins such status. 3. Tournament Champions won during the course of the contest will gain a one (1) time bonus of 50 25 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a warrior(s) win such status. 4. Points awarded for tournament participation are 5 for any entrant, (15 total for a TV and 25 total for a TC.) However, death in a tournament will result in a -5 score for that tournament. (If a warrior TV's and is subsequently killed in a tournament the points scored are -5 for that tournament.) 5. Points for TVs and TCs and tournament deaths will be applied the Turn after RSI posts tournament results in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter (i.e., if the results post on North Fork turn 275, points will be credited on North Fork turn 276 to the applicable teams). Special Considerations: 1. Each alliance begins the Turf War with zero (0) points. 2. There will be NO alliance or team changes once the contest has begun. If you begin the Turf War with Alliance A, you must end the Turf War with Alliance A. If you begin the Turf War with Team A, you must end the Turf War with Team A. 3. There will be a maximum of five (5) teams allowed per alliance for the Turf War VII. 4. The Dark Arena may be used on the first turn only, of every warrior, without penalty. Prizes: The Turf War is normally a "winner take all" contest. However, for TWVII, a prize will be awarded each of the twelve turns to the individual team/manager that fights five fights and has the best w/l record that turn. (Tiebreakers are in order - kills, recognition points earned.) All prizes and 100% of the Gift Certificates will be awarded to the Captain of the winning alliance at the end of the competition. It is the responsibility of the Captain to distribute Gift Certificates. Moderators will submit a list of each manager on the winning alliance to RSI at the completion of the contest for the non-Certificate prizes. All entry fees (rollup certs) are awarded to the winning alliance, except for the twelve reserved for the individual winning manager each week.) The following prizes have been secured from RSI: 1. Renaming of the North Fork (DM 47) arena; 2. Renaming of all Dark Arena Monsters (two for each manager in the winning alliance); 3. Known Favorites for one warrior on each team of the winning alliance (warrior must be ranked Initiate or above, must be alive, and must have at least one DM47 arena fight to receive this award). 4. +1 Skill bonus potion for each manager on the winning alliance. Bonus potion must be applied to a living warrior from (DM 47) 5. +1 Skill bonus potion (one) for each and every individual manager who fights in all 12 rounds AND 54 fights of the Turf War. Bonus potion must be applied to a living warrior from (DM 47) These RSI awards will be listed by the Moderator for claiming from RSI (Lee) within 4 turns of the end of TW VI. The certs will be mailed to the winning alliance by the Moderators within two weeks of the end of the TW. Moderators: The Moderators for this event will be Oz and Master Darque. They will arbitrate all dealings during the course of the contest. Their decisions will be final. All questions, comments, and scoring disputes may be directed to Land of Oz or Darque Forces via diplo in DM 47. Managers with internet access may send a private message to [The Consortium] or [Darque] on the Duel2 Forums. Lastly, you may also email questions, comments, and scoring disputes to rebelnerfherder at yahoo dot com or wfms101 at aol dot com. Please note there have been rule changes from the last Turf War.
