                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

There were tears in her eyes as he made his way unsteadily away from both her
and the table. The din of the inn continued around her as she used the heel of her
palm to drive away the traces of despair that threatened to make their way down her
cheeks as they engulfed her. The back of his head disappeared into the crowd that
congregated in the back by the hall that led to the restrooms. Around her, people
were generally engaged in the act of making merry, the volume of conversation
speaking volumes, if you will, about the volume of alcohol that had been consumed.
It had taken a lot for her to even consider the opportunity, if you could call
it such, when it had quite literally recently knocked on her door for a second time,
defying all the rules about opportunities and knocking. She had answered that door
years ago. And, after a brief fandango into the unknown, returned. She had not,
truth be told, looked back except on the occasional odd late night when she found
herself both awake and alone which, over the course of the last few years, had been
an increasing occurrence.
He returned to the table and eased himself onto the dark wood of the bench while
signaling over the waitress. Then he remembered the band and twisted around to look
at them while she made her way over to the table, serving tray in hand.
"Can I get you all another round?"
"Absolutely, I'll have another glass. Honey? She'll have another," he said,
not waiting for a reply.
     "I'm good, no thanks."
He looked at her, annoyance contracting his brows almost involuntarily as the
waitress went off towards the bartender.
"Aren't you having a good time?"
She had collected herself during his absence and looked across the table at him.
"I'm worried about you," she offered quietly as the band, Cats Laughing, hit
both a chorus and crescendo. She had passively watched him progress down this same
path on numerous other nights, unwilling to make decisions for another adult, even
one she loved. "I can't do this."
     "What?"
"Why don't we head home, baby? You'll be more comfortable," she said a little
louder. Enticing him with other means had become less and less effective. "We have
some good wine at home."
"Maybe in a bit," he replied, looking back at the band and, to his reckoning,
ending the discussion.
She looked at him. Her left hand twitched involuntarily and she looked down at
it and the ring it bore. The waitress sat another glass of Harbinger Cabernet down
on the dark wood, glancing at her with a raised eyebrow. Once again, she shook her
head and the waitress headed off.
"Have you given any thought to what we talked about?"
     He pretended not to hear.
     "Baby?"
"Do we have to talk about this now?" He picked up the cab and downed one third
of the glass. "I'm here to have a good time."
"When do you suggest we talk about it? You keep saying--"
"Not tonight. Get another glass and lighten up." He looked at her briefly,
grin forced, and turned back to the band. "Let's have a good time."
She looked at him, silently willing him to turn back to her. To look at her and
finally understand. To see the widening chasm and step away from the edge. Her left
hand twitched again, but she wouldn't dignify it by looking down. Sweeping up broken
glass, sleeping through a snore that would wake the dead, forgotten conversations
from just the night before, before she'd retired and he had opened another bottle.
"Great band, eh,?" he said, drinking more wine. She knew what came next, so she
looked away with wet eyes when he glanced her way.
"Yeah," she nodded. After a few surreptitious deep breaths to allow her eyes to
dry up, she looked back over at him. Perhaps a minute later, he looked over at her
as she stared at him. She waited.
"I mean it," he said, looking intently at her.
Somewhat startled, she tilted her head and raised her eyebrows, her heart
beating that much more quickly.
"What?" She leaned forward, making sure not to miss his next words.
"This is a phenomenal band!" He turned back, set his glass down and signaled
the waitress.
The waitress stepped to the side as she smoothly rose from the booth. She
looked down at him, noting again his rugged good looks, startlingly blue eyes and
full lips that she knew so well. Her head swiveled away from the table as she looked
around the bar, seeing nothing and hearing less. A staggered breath was drawn and
released forcefully through pursed lips. She looked back again to find him eyeing
her. Seconds went by like minutes. He opened his mouth and she paused.
"Another round," he said, turning to and winking at the waitress. "Make sure to
bring a Woody White for my lady."
She stepped around the waitress and steadily walked towards the restrooms, left
hand clenching and unclenching. It felt odd but she was determined to ignore it.
She passed the men's room on the right and approached the women's room on the left.
The waitress sashayed through the crowd, serving tray loaded with several drinks
skillfully held above her head. One of her regulars was "on the nods" as she liked
to call it. Head slowly sinking to his chest then, with a start, snapping back up.
One of his eyes squinted involuntarily, making him look a bit like a pirate. Or a
drunk. He tipped well, though. She set the Harbinger down in front of him, and then
the Woody White on his wife's side of the table. He grinned at her as he picked up
his new glass.
After a few minutes, he glanced down at his empty glass then over at her
untouched chardonnay. She hadn't returned from the restroom yet, so he would just
order her another glass. He reached over to poach the chardonnay and stopped, his
head snapping towards the restrooms and back to her glass. Next to it, the diamond
wedding ring winked at him in the relative darkness.

                           *         *        *      *

He sat on the park bench, looking over the waves on the lake. A few mallards
and an unusually fearless white duck fought over shredded pieces of wheat bread that
he threw to them. This would be the third, and last, afternoon he waited. He wasn't
a quitter, but, in the end, he had to respect the decisions of others. As much as he
wanted her back, there really wasn't much likelihood. Years ago, about twenty years
ago to be almost exactly precise, she had first stepped out on the sands of Alastari
for him. And done well, sending opponent after opponent to their knees. Such anger.
Such white hot, tightly controlled anger. And, though he didn't know the equivalent
length of time on this world, he was pretty sure it was no more than a handful of
years.
He was dressed in the usual black and grey, boots laced up high though missing
his preferred cloak. Not appropriate here, due both to the current weather and sense
of fashion. After all, he wouldn't want to stand out. Getting himself noticed here
would be, at best, ill-advised. More likely, it would be disastrous.
The sound of footsteps triggered a desire to look up, which he squelched. After
all, anyone could be wandering through the park at this time of day. It wasn't until
the shadow crept across his features and stopped there that he looked up, squinting
into the sun behind her.
     "I'd about given up on--"
     "Shut. Up."

                                      SPY REPORT

I can't believe the violence in MURSKA! I still haven't told Mom I'm writing
Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... MVP award for CHALER? HOUSE
JHEREG's proud of it after beating PERSISTENT BEGGAR and getting 14 points. Talk
about yer major upsets! COLLEEN's match with THE CHROME HORSE cost her a loss of 6
points! And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!) Oh well,
welcome OISIN. Aren't CHILDREN OF LLYR proud. (Oh, my.) Who was the wiseguy that
said MURSKA's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Fire Dragon Inn? Don't look at
me!
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it.
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All MURSKA ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a
job, that's what!!!
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. Remember
you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Later, Debby Tonte
