                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

How could someone be so stupid as to miss their Dark Arena challenge?
The noise of the Last Laugh Tavern hummed around her. She sat at the bar,
nursing a decent chardonnay and ruminating on the team's performance since Vlad
headed off to Sunset to pursue the literal red X on a map. She had found some
promising recruits. And she had trained them based on her expertise from just a few
years ago--well, 20 years ago local time--and had watched them march into the arena
at the ready.
     And fail miserably.
That was putting it mildly. They had had their asses handed to them. They had
had their milkshakes drunk, their kitties littered, their yings yanged. They were
the little sisters of the poor. Srahi had even managed to stand around long enough
to miss the dark arena challenges and get picked off by a challenger. Pathetic. It
was Kat's responsibility to see their milkshakes restored, their kitties resupplied
with litter and their yings yanked. And she had no idea where to start.
"An Omlivet Peach Brandy, if you would be so kind," came a voice from beside
her. He was of slight build, light skinned and handsome.
"Why the brandy?" she asked, seeking distraction and turning to engage him
whilst the bartender reached up to the top shelf.
He turned to her and effectuated a frown of recognition, complete with a
furrowing of brow.
     "Kathana?"
Her natural reaction, for reasons she didn't care to examine was one of defense.
"What of it? What if I am? I don't recognize you." She sat back and
considered him, mentally shrugged, and turned away. "Never mind, enjoy your drink."
"You misunderstand me. Please accept my apologies if I have somehow given
offence." He settled onto the barstool beside her, removed and set his chapeau on
the bar. "You might as well call me Jonathan." The bartender spit into and wiped
out a shot glass, carefully poured the brandy into it from a bottle with a faded
label. Jonathan saluted the bartender, sipped the brandy and suggested that another
shot, in the company of some ice water, would not be unwelcome in due time.
She stared into her glass, swirling the chardonnay and wondering if something
stronger might be appropriate.
"You are ill equipped," He said, holding up the brandy to the light of the
candelabra.
"You are ill informed," She replied, wondering how she had gotten into this
discussion in the first place. "You are also ill mannered."
"Come, you are trying to resurrect a team from the ashes of over 20 years. Do
you pretend this presents no challenges?"
     "None I can't overcome."
     "Consider my brandy."
"I'd rather not." After all, if she'd wanted to consult with a drunkard, she
could have stayed at home.
"Then perhaps we can consider your chardonnay?"
     "What of it?"
"It is Tamber Boyd, is it not? Come now, I saw the bottle. Quite good, for a
chardonnay. It was bottled 3 years ago and, despite being a fine vintage, reflects
the age of both the grape and vineyard aswell as the short distillation process. Oak
casks, five years."
     "And?"
     "Consider my brandy."
"I already told you I had no interest in tasting it."
"Ah, but there is the artificial chasm you are creating. I am not asking you to
taste it. I asked you to consider it. It has been aged twenty-five years and
reflects a purity that your Tamber could not begin to approach. Consider that in
light of your current situation."
"I consider this conversation concluded." She drained her glass and signaled
the bartender that she was ready to settle the score.
"Very well," he replied, also signaling the barkeep but with different
intention. To the barkeep's credit, he interpreted both gestures without the need
for further expounding. "I wish you all the luck in your future endeavors because,
the Gods know, I can't in reality or good conscience proffer that you will enjoy
success."
"How dare you?!" she stammered, ignoring her earlier dismissal. "You suggest we
will continue to fail?"
"I am telling you it is inevitable," he replied, scooting to the back of his
stool in case her response included physical punctuation. "Has not your team gone 3-
7 since returning? Was not at least one of those precious wins against the arena
stooges?" He pointed to her empty glass and then at his brandy. "You are trying to
apply twenty-five year old stratagems on a world that has changed considerably since
you were last on it. The managers and warriors that are left here are those whose
stratagems, like my Omlivet, have been refining and improving over those years."
"Bah, we are simply getting our sea legs again," she replied with a snort.
"Besides, the pool of recruits is lacking. We used to be able to find better in the
compost pile."
"Perhaps you are correct. Let us leave aside your team and new recruits. How
have you done since returning?"
She twitched as if stung. Her mouth opened and closed, eyes narrowing. The
bartender set another brandy in front of the arrogant gentleman and turned to her.
"That'll be 2 and 3, miss, for the wine," he said, referring to the locally-accepted
denominations of currency. She reached into her pants, sorting out the appropriate
coinage and slapped it on the bar.
"Two and three. How apropros. Isn't that how your team did this week?"
Ignoring him, she stood, nodded to the bartender and walked out into the moonlight.
The bastard was right. House Jhereg had some catching up to do and she had
better get on it.

                                      SPY REPORT

Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! HOUSE JHEREG had cause to celebrate, after
LOFTIS got 18 points by beating AMBITIOUS GUARD. A MAN successfully staved off a
grab for the roses by THE CHROME HORSE of VAR'S FAV BARS. Does MURSKA have no one
talented enough to dethrone him? So who's the team that's been walking into taverns
last week and ordering milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me.
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Like a horde of jackals fleeing from
the lion, so did the "warriors" in MURSKA avoid SEA DOGS. The warriors of SEA DOGS
found their efforts at combat frustrated as HOUSE JHEREG apparently had more
important things to do than fight. Is it charming personality? Conversational
abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, PALUG is the most challenged warrior.
Willing to win at any cost is KATHANA, who challenged PALUG, 9 points junior. Our
sympathies, PALUG! I thought KATHANA showed great skill and promise when she was
bested by PALUG. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Questions are being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the
arena. A certain tavern in MURSKA would I avoid!
Do not think spyreporting in MURSKA is the highlight of my life. Keep those
sands bloody and the buzzards fat! MURSKA, I leave you now. The Duelmaster has
agreed to foot my bill at The Victory Tavern. 'Til next time-- Novgorodny Vir

SLAUGHTER CHALLENGE 2

Several years ago I ran a contest known as the "Slaughter Challenge" which was the
idea of a member of my alliance at the time. We unfortunately lost him during a
robbery attempt at the store he worked at. This November will mark the 10th
anniversary of his passing so I have decided to run the Slaughter Challenge again in
remembrance of him.

Rich Hammes was a member of my alliance, the Vendetta Cartel, and had sponsored me
into the alliance. Rich was a common poster to both the Yahoo Duelmasters group as
well as the Duel2 boards and our Alliance's Yahoo group. He went by the handle
GameOgre on the Duel2 boards and was known by the name Abarsis, the Slaughter Priest.
He was a very kind and thoughtful man who always had time to talk with not only his
alliance-mates but anyone else who wanted to discuss Duelmasters. He also had time

to talk with anyone about personal life issues if he felt he could help. He was a
daily, and prolific, poster to these sites and seemed to enjoy the interaction with
others regarding this game that he loved so much.

I would also like everyone to know that he spent several years in the US Navy serving
on a Nuclear attack Submarine in protection of our nation. He was well loved, and
well known, by the community in which he lived even spending time at a local Ice
Cream Shop around closing time to assure that the lady who owned the store was safe
as she was often alone when she closed her shop. He was a well known and much loved
member of his local community. His death was grieved by his local San Diego
community where they held a candle-light vigil for him and many expressed their
disbelief that he was gone. These are just a scant few examples of what a kind and
caring man he was and why not only our gaming community lost a great deal on that
fateful day, but also shows why there was tremendous sadness among the community in
which he lived.

It is near to 10 years since his passing and there are many times I wonder, "What
would Rich think about this...." I miss my friend dearly to this day and I hope you
will come join us in this contest idea which he himself came up with. He thought we
should all learn to appreciate what Jorja does to keep our smaller arenas alive and
populated!

The contest will be held in Morya, arena 28, beginning on the turn that is due on
November 6th, 2014 (turn 378 I believe). Tourney participation is not allowed during
the contest but the contest will start after the fall Mailer so you can get your
warriors a few fight experience should you choose to. The timing of the contest was
done to allow entry into the fall mailer.

The rules are fairly simple and inspired to let us all feel what it is like to run
warriors like Jorja does. Her teams across Alastari may sometimes be taken for
granted so this contest will allow us to appreciate her teams a little better as they
populate the arenas we fight in.

The Rules--

There are no challenges, avoids, bloodfeuds, or tourneys allowed and only one single
use of the Dark Arena is allowed after the contest begins. Win or lose the Dark
Arena is allowed but once, so if you want your warrior dead be sure and throw the
fight!

The contest will last for 12 turns. May I point out that if you use your Dark Arena
fight you will get either 2 points, for winning, or -2, for losing, and ALL fights
count in the scoring. It matters not if you fight a non-contest warrior or a stand-
in; they still count as much as fighting a contest warrior. This will be a test of
basic strategy with a touch of luck added in as well.

If anyone should break the no tourney rule they will lose 5 points for each warrior
entered and those warriors, and any subsequent warriors who replace them in death,
cannot score points! The one exception are the dead tourneys. Should you wish you
may enter your warriors in dead tourneys, since they are not a member of your team,
or even the living, at the time. The warrior may even return to the contest if a
natural opening can be found for it, or you choose to use your Dark Arena fight to
make that opening (if you still have that option left). Break the no DA, challenge,
or avoid rules and you will be DQed as soon as the transgression is discovered. To
keep the contest playing field as level as possible, we will have no messing with
these rules. Of course you may DA the one time, just as a clarification, but the
second time gets you DQed. This also counts if it is found you bring a second team
in for the purpose of making challenges; you will be DQed.

Scoring is as follows:

1 point for winning
1 point for killing (giving 2 in total, 1 for the win and 1 for the kill)
1 point for at least one of your warriors writing a personal (regardless of number of
personals beyond one you still only get one point). Make sure it is written from
one of your team's warriors and not simply the manager entity or you will not get
  the point.
-1 point for losing
-1 point for being killed (giving -2 in total, -1 for losing and -1 for being killed)
-5 points and the loss of that warrior's slot for scoring the remainder of the
contest for entering a warrior into a REGULAR tourney (again DEAD tourney is open)

The Prizes:
1st place -- +1 bonus to one warrior on the team, 1 resurrection potion, and 1
  favorite knowledge
2nd place -- +1 bonus for one warrior, 1 favorites knowledge
3rd place -- +1 bonus for one warrior

Iron Manager Award -- Run 54 of the possible 60 fights and get a +1 bonus potion

The bonus potions and favorites knowledge must be used on warriors with 5 FE or more
and MUST be used within 2 turns of the end of the contest. The resurrection potion
must be used within 6 months of the end of the contest but may be used on any warrior
regardless of FE. ALL prizes must be used on the contest team, they are NOT
transferable to another team!
