Chaler stared at her and waited. After a short period, he realized she considered the discussion concluded. "I believe I did you the honor to ask you a question," he said sharply. She took a sip of a deep red wine and reached for a cracker on which a cheese made from goat had been spread. Upon closer inspection, a dark line ran through the middle of an otherwise off-white cheese. He had no idea what that could be. She took a bite of the cracker and cheese, then a decent slug of wine and set both down, facing him with her hands folded in her lap. "Which part of 'I have no idea' are you struggling with?" "The part where you consider that an acceptable answer for the lack of a bloodfeud." "Why are you so worried about it?" "How could you not be?" "I don't see that there is anything to be done about it. What end would fretting serve? Someone wise once said the time to worry is when there is nothing else to be done." "Well?" "Rather than worry, I'm broadening my horizons through study of this novel." "What horizons would those be?" "My understanding of and appreciation for the struggle of women to advance the cause of nobility." "Really? What's the book called?" "Trollops of Murska." Chaler blinked, deciding he would get nothing further out of the discussion. "What's in that cheese, anyway? What is that dark line made of?" "Ash," she replied, taking another bite and swig of wine. "How, as in cinders? Impossible!" "Do you give me the lie?" she asked coolly. "If so, I can assure you--" A banging on the front door interrupted her. Startled, Chaler drew a dagger. Kathana satisfied herself with a glance at the door. "Vilmi! Can you get the door?" she called out. She felt, rather than heard, the new teammate striding to the door. A creak indicated his success in opening it. An extended silence caused her to frown, fearing she had inadvertently put her new friend in some sort of danger. She put her glass down and sat up. "Vilmi?" Vilmos walked in, ducking under the transom. "There was a messenger at the door," he commented. "Pray, what did he want?" Kathana asked. "He didn't say." "How, he clapped and said nothing?" "He asked if this was the guildhouse for Almost Exactly, which I assured him it was. He then gave me this." Vilmos reached into his prodigious belt. Tucked beside his dueling gloves was a folded piece of parchment with a wax seal that had, somehow, survived the tucking process intact. He plucked it out and handed it to Kathana. "It is for me?" "He didn't say." Kathana started to ask another question and then stopped, determining to pursue a different course. "Please hand me the missive, dear Vilmi." Parchment in hand, Kathana's eyebrows raised as she studied the seal. It was unbroken. The signet had left an impression of what appeared to be a coin in relief stamped with a stylized 'HW'. She frowned. "This appears to be from Howling Wolf!" "What!" exclaimed Chaler, who had still not sheathed his dagger. Kathana broke the seal, and opened the message. She read it in silence. Then she read it again. When she started in on it a third time, a cough from Chaler caused her to look up. "You seemed to have received a message, Boss." Chaler, not usually one for stating the obvious, hoped she would take his meaning. "Yes, yes. Would you like to know what is says?" she asked. With an eloquent look over at Vilmos, which was returned after a fashion, Chaler said, "That would be lovely, yes, quite." "Howling Wolf has invited me to a meeting." Chaler snorted. "I'm sure you'll be showing up to THAT meeting." "I think I shall," she responded thoughtfully. "You're kidding, right? Boss, you killed his warrior. He didn't bloodfeud you this week, so you challenged and beat another of his warriors. Good call. He couldn't possibly bear you any ill will." Chaler glanced over at Vilmos to see if the rookie got the sarcasm. He thought so but couldn't be sure. "Nonetheless," she replied, "I won't run from this." * * * * * Chaler awoke with a start to feel Vilmos shaking him roughly. He had fallen asleep on the same couch Kat had been sitting on before heading off to meet with Howling Wolf. She had refused protection. Chaler shook his head, trying to clear the fog. "Where is she, did she slip in past me?" Vilmos shook his head. "What time is it?" "Just after dawn." "She's not back?!" "No." "Are you sure?" "Yes." "How do you know?" Vilmos gave him a look. "Okay, perhaps she slipped past you and went to bed." Vilmos gave him another look. "I checked her room, she was not there." "So, you woke me up to let me know she's not in her room?" "No." "You woke me up to let me know it was dawn and she's not back?" Chaler continued hopefully. "No." "Criminy, then why DID you wake me up?" "When she didn't return by dawn, I walked over to the Foot of Pride guildhouse and knocked on the door. One of warriors came to the porch, looked me up and down, and suggested I must be there to repair the recently-damaged door. When I asked for Kathana, he looked startled and denied understanding to what I was referring." Chaler's eyes widened and he stood up quickly. "You mean to tell me that--" "Yes, Foot of Pride insists that there was no meeting and, even if there was, she never showed up." SPY REPORT Hail and well met warriors of MURSKA! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team FOOT OF PRIDE was unseated this week as HOUSE JHEREG moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with a 1-1-0 record for the round. VILMOS caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested LITTLE TOMMY and was awarded 13 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, VILMOS put down LITTLE TOMMY, causing him to lose 4 points of recognition in the process. This time victory fell to the grasp of the usurper. All hail DANNY BOY, Duelmaster of MURSKA! Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out! Many and various are the arts of battle. In MURSKA "art" is a word that has long since passed from the language! MURSKA, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of thy guilds is CHILDREN OF LLYR, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last week avoiding CHILDREN OF LLYR. Indeed it was HOUSE JHEREG. Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after TURNING BACK. Watch your back! What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his foe's mortality? Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? Sadly warriors, now longer can I keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DANNY BOY 4424 26 12 0 108 FOOT OF PRIDE (396) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME A MAN 4521 11 4 1 97 FOOT OF PRIDE (396) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME OISIN 4439 17 24 0 87 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) FIXED DRINK 4529 11 2 0 83 FOOT OF PRIDE (396) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME PALUG 4509 11 9 1 65 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) -KATHANA 3553 7 3 1 65 HOUSE JHEREG (42) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TURNING BACK 4548 10 2 0 54 FOOT OF PRIDE (396) -LOFTIS 4571 2 2 0 43 HOUSE JHEREG (42) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME CHALER 4572 5 2 0 33 HOUSE JHEREG (42) VILMOS 4579 3 0 0 33 HOUSE JHEREG (42) PADRIAG 4556 4 8 1 25 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -EXECUTUS 4537 3 1 0 22 BLACK COLOSSUS (402) LITTLE TOMMY 4566 5 4 0 19 CHILDREN OF LLYR (141) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
