TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Kathana stepped out onto the porch and paused to get a sense of the city.
Looking around, she gauged the passersby and otherwise breathed in the mood. She
checked the time, walked down the porch steps and sauntered off in the direction of
the Foot of Pride Guildhouse, knowing she had plenty of time to get there. A wine
might be in order to help her gather her nerves.
She had a problem, besides the obvious. The team had begun to right the ship,
as it were, winning some close contests in the arena; however, House Jhereg was still
out of business. They had been gone over twenty years and, sadly, the "exotic"
trades had not sat idly by, awaiting their return. Her path took her by established
businesses she remembered owning a piece of in the past as well as shop fronts she
would bet her favorite longsword concealed some illegitimate business behind the
external facade. She wasn't sure how she knew, but, much as you suspected someone
who had done 'work', there were signs if you looked in the right places, often for
what was missing as much as what was present.
Here, the Sulchin 'Hotel' sat on the corner of Twovine and Sulchar--the former's
namesake, Sulchin, being the slightly less successful, though prosperous, founder of
the hotel and the twin brother of the latter, Sulchar, a city dignitary--with its
doors thrown open and a good mix of passersby going in and out. Despite it being a
hotel, one never seemed to be able to get an overnight room. This, of course, was
owing to the fact that the rooms were generally paid for hourly by the clientele of
the brothel contained within the building. The doors being open, one could rest
assured the city guard had been paid and that no one seeking company within would be
unceremoniously hauled without and arrested in the street proper.
House Jhereg had once held an interest in that hotel. As well as a number of
other businesses in this area.
Shanky's was further along Twovine and had a whole wall full of dusty bottles of
wine, many of them cabernet. Kathana stepped down three steps, entered and wound her
way to the long wooden bar that lined the right side of the room. A few long tables,
as well as a couple quads and deuces, defined the room. The fireplace, currently
roasting a group of sausages as well as what looked like goose, sat opposite the bar
and was sporting a nice blaze of seasoned oak, the heat a welcome addition this late
in the fall.
She settled onto an open barstool and grinned at the barkeep, who looked a
question at her.
"Do you have Chanticleer?" she asked, resting her elbows on the bar and looking
meaningfully at the wall behind him.
The barkeep frowned and drew what appeared to be a practiced breath. "My dear
woman, I would need you to be at once more discerning and specific as this house is
blessed with several varietals, including the 256 through 259 cabernet, the 257
through 264 merlot, the--"
"My apologies, Goodman. Can you recommend a Chanticleer red for my obviously
unsophisticated palette?"
He looked at her to see if, perhaps, she was mocking him. She held his gaze
with a friendly grin and raised set of eyebrows. His discerning eyes took in not
only the cut of her clothes but also the sword at her belt and the purse at her hip.
"Good madam," he replied, "I would suggest a Chanticleer blend. Shanky's is the
only place in Murksa that...." The Goodman droned on for quite some time praising
the vineyard, the bar and his good taste in selecting the particular vintage until,
after a sufficient period of time to allow him his wind, as it were, she agreed with
a curt nod.
She sat, sipped and practiced silent soliloquy, considering her meeting with
Howling Wolf. The wine was good and, as best as she could tell, there was a hole in
her glass. She still had some time, so she gestured over to the barkeep who, as luck
would have it, was already approaching with the bottle. With a practiced flair, he
drew a handheld contraption and poured the wine through it, where it gushed frothy
into her glass below. He then reached for a second glass, set it in front of her and
filled it just as effectively as he had the first.
"Thank you, Goodman," she said, "but I have neither time nor coordination for
two glasses at once."
He studied her for a moment. "You are expected and welcomed to join someone in
the second back room on the left as you pass through the curtain," he said, nodding
towards the back. "He had suggested a glass of his own would not be unwelcome."
Well, shit.
With a confidence she displayed if didn't feel, she took both glasses and
wandered down the long table. She needn't have bothered, all of the patrons were
carefully ignoring her. She strode to the curtain that hung in the back and passed
through it. The first door down the hallway on the left was open and the room was
thick with shadows that merrily played with the candles on the table in the room.
The second door, which sat past the stairs leading to the second story, was closed
but opened as she approached it. Pausing at the door, she perceived that, with two
glasses of wine, she would be delayed in bringing any arguments to bear should they
be required. With a mental shrug, she passed within and glanced over the candles to
the man that sat at the table beyond them.
The figure, whose hands rested easily on the table, wore a cowl which
effectively hid his features. There was something familiar about the build but she
couldn't place it. Frowning, she set the wine down and put her hands on her hips,
which was as close as she wanted to come to drawing without additional provocation.
"Well?" she said. "You pretend you have some business with me?"
The figure threw back his hood and stood. Her eyes widened involuntarily before
a hand from behind was clamped over her mouth and another secured her wrists.
SPY REPORT

FOOT OF PRIDE is the top team these days, buddies! HERO ALLIANCE had cause to
celebrate, after NICHOLAS got 13 points by beating MORDANT DESERTER. Win some, lose
some. Speaking of which, TURNING BACK was winsome, after beating LOFTIS and seeing
it lose 5 points. Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by
FREAKAZOID, of HERO ALLIANCE, who despite a 12-5-1 couldn't overcome MURSKA's Number
1. Word has it one team in MURSKA is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a
charmed life!
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the
mountaintops, so stand the warriors of BLACK COLOSSUS, alone and unchallenged. As a
woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of HOUSE JHEREG, so did that sorry team
shy from BLACK COLOSSUS OISIN found himself challenged by a warrior 22 below:
