Well, the kontest is officially over and it looks like we are going to have a run-off
between Legendary Bastards and Kamikazi for the win. Good luck, guys.
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Dark and Stormy Night ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
Artebas Le Bhas stepped down from his perch on Tarzak's hand and looked around
with satisfaction. This was, indeed, the entrance for which he had searched. He
turned to make a comment to the creature, a sort of genie, he had decided, but Tarzak
had vanished. Well, it had done what he asked. He didn't need it any more.
With one hand he pulled the parchment out of his shirt, with the other he traced
the carvings on the face of the key stone. He looked up the height of the stone in
the diffused light, marveling at how clear the inscriptions were after all these
years.... Odd, the stone appeared to be at least seven feet high, why hadn't he seen
it before when he scouted the hilltop by daylight? How could he have missed it? He
looked around for other landmarks.
And recognized nothing at all.
There were no bushes, no tangled grasses, not even a hillside! The stone stood
on a gently sloping plain under a featureless, faintly luminous, steel-colored sky,
and the only other landmarks were lesser stones forming a circle around it at least a
hundred yards across. Some other dimension, that must be the answer. He fought down
panic; what did he know about other dimensions?
What had he said to that cursed genie? The Gate of Lorthkan, that was it, and
the Seal of Koth. Was this a test of some kind, to see if he really HAD done those
things? Anger whirled through him: what business had the genie to test him? It was
a servant, nothing more!
But he had told it to bring him to the entrance to the Catacombs of Jehrans, and
whatever else it did, the thing had to obey him, did it not? Of course it did.
Everyone knew that much about genies. So this must be the entrance, or at least one
entrance, and once he was inside the catacombs and had gained the treasure, he could
find the proper way out onto the hillside across from Jhans. Or he could summon
Tarzak again and demand to be taken back. Either way would be fine. He was okay
here.
Artebas patted his roll of parchment, smiled, and stepped closer to the stone.
Barudai the Rirorni moved sideways until he could put one shoulder against all
that remained of his shelter. From here he could watch the tunnel that had appeared
in the hillside behind him and the wall of water that fell from the sky in front.
The tunnel beckoned with dryness and warmth, but he was not such a fool as trust
himself to a magical passage. It was bound to be a trap. Better to run out into the
storm than to venture into the depths of the hill.
A disturbance in the glassy smoothness of the falling rain claimed his full
attention. A man stepped through it, gaunt, clad in a few rain-soaked ribbons and
draggled feathers, clutching a deeply carved staff. His face and body were tattooed
with the symbols that marked him as a dark shaman, a follower of Mytori. The priests
of Mytori had spells that could overpower the most accomplished swordsman, but
Barudai raised his sword anyway, prepared to sell his life as dearly as he could.
The shaman never looked at him. The burning eyes were fixed on the tunnel, the
thin-lipped mouth stretched wide in the smile of a man who sees his dearest wish made
real in front of him. The shaman prostrated himself at the entrance to the tunnel,
began to chant, rose and entered it.
Which meant that Barudai could escape his pursuer, but he was not as happy about
that as he had expected to be. Whatever the shaman thought to find down there could
not be good news for the ordinary people of the plains.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Bow down, suckas! I'm about to get Ber-ZER-ker up in this piece because I ain't got
time to give, yo. First off, let me tell these peoples about Badda Boop. He's fat,
nasty, and WEAK! That's right; I'm putting it down like that. Why do you think
Badda Boop doesn't wear armor? It's because he can't FIT in any! Seriously, he'd be
standing there with his belly hanging out from under some crusty ass, gravy stained
chestplate and one foot hanging half way out his solleret. Unfortunately, I won't be
able to embarrass Badda Boop on the sands this turn due to other priorities. Moving
right along to what really matters in Jhans, City of DOOM! I would like to
officially congratulate Iver and his bloodthirsty Anarkysts! They have reached a
truly impressive milestone by breaking 800 fights in Jhans! Only one other team has
been such a feared presence in the history of our fine arena so Iver is now one of
the true Legendary Bastards. Despite his maintenance butchered win-loss he has
managed to rack up a record breaking 38 kills! They don't call the man The Sexorcist
for nothing. Iver and his Anarkysts are always stabbin' their way to the top!
Speaking of death I have a commitment to keep and some fools to represent on!

SPY REPORT
Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for JHANS. I don't wanna hurt anybody's
feelings or anything, but SHOUT HEY HAMMERZ really goofed with their 0-0-0. One team
deserves special mention 'cause they moved up 1 after going 4-1-0. Keep it up,
SUICIDAL DREAMS! MVP award for WU JEN? SWORD SAINTS' proud of him after beating
MOON CRICKET and getting 17 points. Talk about yer big time losers! JAIMBE got
smashed by CLOVER, and lost 14 points! Like DARK ARENA's PUPPETMA$TER is sweating
since he got Dark Arena Challenged by Duelmaster SASQUATCH COWBOY! Don't you think
the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think SASQUATCH COWBOY should let PUPPETMA$TER be
Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. I hear the top team insists all
their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? LEGENDARY BASTARDS was the most avoided team. Is a
326-303-25 record really that scary? I don't know what MEMPHIS MAFIA II's been
doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from LEGENDARY BASTARDS,
that's fer sher. Like, is HOOKFANG SHANKER popular, or what? He was challenged the
most in all of JHANS! He's got a 3-3-0, is that good? GAMBIT is being unfair.
She's challenged down 16 against RECOUNT. I don't know why they let this stuff go
on. (I'd better shut up) Is this how MEMPHIS MAFIA II advances, by having their
members (GAMBIT) fight people that are really below them (RECOUNT)? Some fights are
really unfair. How do you think URBAN HEBREW feels about being challenged by KALISTA
J'NAE, 19 points above him? I was sorry to see such an unfair "fight" in JHANS.
KALISTA J'NAE got 7 points after beating URBAN HEBREW, 19 points below her. See if I
ever talk to GUNNIN' GOLDSTEIN again! DARK ANGEL was so low when He challenged he.
Hhmph! DARK ANGEL is a real man! He was challenged by GUNNIN' GOLDSTEIN, 20 points
above, and BEAT him! Dark Arena, anyone? For sure, I was holding my breath when I
found out KENSAI challenged BANE. After all, haven't SWORD SAINTS and PORTAL had a
long standing duel in JHANS? It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but BANE
wants me to write about it since he lost to KENSAI. Satisfied?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All JHANS ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. Like, who is this beast??? SASQUATCH COWBOY gets sent to the
Dark Arena, battles PUPPETMA$TER, and returns to tell of it!!! I bet LEGENDARY
BASTARDS manager is surprised! Hey! Quit laughing! Just because JIGSAW KILLER had
7-10-1 was no reason for LEGENDARY BASTARDS to send him to the Dark Arena! Stop it!
Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or
have someone write for you.)
