Deep within the underground fortress known as the Pit. A silver vertical slash opens in a heavily sealed room. The straight line of the slash rotates into an opening in the air. A hooded and cloaked figure steps out of the newly formed gateway and as soon as he clears it the line snaps shut. A quick glance at the thick dust on everything lets him know even without feeling for the weave of the wards he left to protect his private rooms that no one has disturbed them in the seven months that he has been away. A wave of his hand and the dust seems to sweep itself away. He strides across the room to a chair almost large enough to be a throne and sits down. He takes a deep breath of the newly cleaned room and thinks to himself, "Ahh, my precious Jhans. I have missed her." He reflects on the circumstances that have brought him back to his favored stomping grounds. A call from his Confederate Baphomet (how he had found him in the plane that he was currently inhabiting still befuddled him.) asking for his aid to resurrect their failing city. It had taken him all of two seconds to pledge his aid. He smiled. He really had missed Jhans. A sudden loud sound carrying from the depths of the fortress brought him out of his musings. He allowed the power to fill him as he stood up and unraveled the weaves of the wards holding the doors closed. As he stepped out of the room, the power filling him increased his senses far beyond his normal limits. And with it he realized what he was hearing, his warriors, his Fallen, still following the training schedule that he had set for them. He couldn't help but smile. He would have to give them all raises. As he entered the training grounds the ever alert Formel looked up from her sparring with the heavily muscled Raziel and cried out, "My Lord!" The whole team stopped what they were doing and turned, dropping to their knee with the opposite hand's knuckles pressed into the dirt. Azrael looked them over and, grinning, said, "Rise." And as his warriors came to their feet he asked his First, Raziel, "Where is Libel? Is she injured?" Raziel responded with an extremely disgusted look on his face, "She left my Lord. Felt that she did not have time to wait for your return to climb to her destiny." "No matter. She is easily replaced. As you have no doubt noticed, I have returned. The Alliance returns. We are going to rebuild our city into what it was, into what we had started to make it before the kLk/DOOMcorps war tore it apart. I pledge to you, my Faithful, my Fallen, that I am here for the duration. I allowed things to...shall we just say annoy?...me into leaving before. I will not allow the Commission to get to me again. I will not allow my anger to make me abandon what is mine. No. What is OURS, again. You have my oath on this. Now I ask you, will you still serve me? I will understand if you wish to leave. Any who do I will grant you enough money that you need not worry for yourself or your family again. So, will you stand with me?" As one the four warriors step forward and declare, "We are the Lord High Commander Azrael's forever. We live but to serve. Our life for your life." "And my life for yours," Azrael replied formally. "Now come to the briefing room, we have plans to make." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * The Ring of Crowned Kings Cosmo sunk deeper into the leather chair and continued to casually expel smoke rings into the mahogany paneled room. He savored the after taste from what he thought must be one of the finest Andorian Cigars he had ever purchased in blood. Searching for a clue he replayed the chain of events leading up to this evening's slaughter in his mind. He wondered how they could have so conveniently lined most of their forces along the exact wall he and his Imperial Guards would attack. Cosmo quickly snapped from his brooding when the spindly kobold scampered into the room, leaping off of furniture and vaulting through rafters. !ll.kid.k abandoned the time worn tome and looked up with a smile as the creature slid to a stop and leapt onto the table before him. "Ah, Gakkin, my dependable friend," cheered !ll.kid.k with arms in the air. A toothy grin spread across the kobold's face. He shook a fist in the air while jumping up and down in a dance of triumph. The kobold stretched his closed fist out toward !ll.kid.k, "For you, my liege!" !ll.kid.k beamed at the kobold, plucked the thick silver ring from his tiny hand, and then gave him a gentle pat on the head. !ll.kid.k nodded, "Excellent work as usual, Gakkin. You shall soon be rewarded for your hard work!" !ll.kid.k briefly examined the archaic markings on the ring and then went back to pouring over the tattered codex he had previously dismissed. Cosmo stood, tossed back his shot of bourbon, returned the cigar the corner of his mouth then verified, "Is it authentic?" Keeping his eyes on his work !ll.kid.k replied, "Yar, it would appear our plan was executed flawlessly. That is if Angus returns uncompromised." "Compromised? I thought you gentlemen had more faith in my talents than to believe that any so called 'noble' Andorian swine could outwit me," sneered Angus as he and his guards filed into the great hall. "I will admit that our plan was not fool proof due to the presence of a most unexpected and equally unbeknownst mage. However, I must say my charade was rather convincing and their curiosity was satiated once I fed them one additional morsel of information." "That's it," declared Cosmo as realization washed over him. "That is why they stacked the southern wall with their most fierce troops! I knew my guard and I slipped in undetected! Dammit, Angus, we had to slaughter an entire battalion and we almost lost good men in the shield wall!" "Bah, Cosmo, there was no doubt that an Imperial Guard as proficient in killing as yours would be overwhelmingly successful. Why do you think your guard was chosen for this leg of the mission," countered Angus, knowing that Cosmo would be soothed by the compliment. "I take it we were able to recover the artifact?" "Yar, it has been authenticated and it's almost ready for attunement and then the extraction. We were waiting for your controversial arrival and for Polarius to stop playing with his toy soldiers over there," snickered !ll.kid.k. "Well, when my ingenious stratagem allows us to claim the Village of Idiots... err...Tobir you will no longer refer to them as toys," retorted Polarius as he waved a hand over the miniature battle map. Polarius reached into a pocket of his brown leather long cloak and produced a thick, short fork. !ll.kid.k accepted the fork and the Warlords gathered around a rune covered, obsidian table that stood in the dead center of the great hall. The table was approximately four feet tall and six feet in diameter. It was covered in intricate runes carved deeply and with flawless precision. The runes seemed to be drawn from the table's center and marched outward to its edges. The center piece was about six inches in diameter and formed a perfect cone. !ll.kid.k struck the ring with the tuning fork, held it to his ear and listened intently for a long moment. Obviously not satisfied with his examination he struck the ring a second time, waited for the overtones to die out, then held it to his ear a second time. Satisfied with his analysis he handed the ring and fork to Polarius. Polarius struck the ring, paused, and then waved the fork hastily past his ear and nodded. !ll.kid.k raised an inquisitive eyebrow at Polarius, "Are you certain?" Polarius donned his trademark grin of sarcasm, "Are you being dismissive of my tuning abilities?" "Bah, enough with your puerile taunts. I have the utmost respect for your abilities and now that we have a better idea of its magical properties let's begin the extraction. Gakkin, my friend, it is time for your reward." !ll.kid.k waved the impish creature over, "Come, friend, bring a stool and place a steady hand flat on the table." The Warlords and the kobold all placed one palm flat on the table while facing the other palm toward the center cone. !ll.kid.k stood the ring on the cone's apex and it immediately began to spin backwards while simultaneously twisting counter clockwise. Each man pushed his eyelids tighter together as the ring spun and twisted faster and faster. Magic began to visibly arc off the ring and course down the deep trenches of table's runes after several minutes of intense channeling. The kobold flinched as he began to feel a sharp tingling sensation in his palm, next his chest, and then throughout his veins. The Warlords were all in a trance-like state as the extraction process continued for little over an hour. Sweat drenched them, their temperatures spiked, their nociceptors fired, their heads pounded, and their hearts raced as the magic surged through them. Finally the ring slowed to a stop, fell from the table's point, rolled around a few times like a roulette piece then teetered into impassivity. Polarius wiped the sweat from his brow, slapped three astrums down on the table and thanked it with a wink and a smile. Finally he snagged the ring from the obsidian slab and struck it with the fork one last time. "It would appear we've extracted a majority of the ring's power. It is still an extremely potent artifact, although, its yield has been significantly diminished." "Did the inhibitors properly amalgamate," inquired Angus with concern stitched across his sweat soaked brow. "Aye, they did. As did all our other special ingredients," snickered Polarius mischievously. "What should we do with it now," asked Cosmo as he tapped the ash off his pungent cigar. "Put it back in play," proclaimed !ll.kid.k knowingly. "Hmm.." Cosmo perplexed, "what is its current capacity?" "Its primary properties are still intact but at a much lower potential. The Ring of Crowned Kings is largely known for its ability to amass a grand army on behalf of its possessor. Considering the current state of Jhans I think it's only fitting that we give back to the arena during her grave time of need." A roguish smile dashed across !ll.kid.k's face, "Besides, we've respun the ring with some interesting snares." !ll.kid.k nodded to Gakkin who looked emboldened with power and new found knowledge, "Dispatch the criers, old friend." "Yes, my liege," complied the creature with crisp articulation and radiating confidence. As Polarius flipped the ring into the air the kobold leapt into the rafters, deftly caught the ring behind his back, bowed to the Warlords and bolted from the great hall. A New Tradition The hand bell rung out across the town square, bringing the day's mundane hustle and bustle to an abrupt halt. The man in the red robe and black breeches fought his way to the usual spot in front of the fountain. Tradesmen hocking wares slowly trailed off into hushed tones as the man slipped the bell into his pocket. He plucked his tricorne off his head, smoothed his hair back and unfurled the scroll. "Oyez, Oyez! From this day forth a new tradition will stand within these city walls. The men known as DOOMcorps have brought Jhans a treasure that many believed was a mere wives' tale. The Warlords have ordered that this treasure should not sit neglected among dust and cobwebs. They have demanded that this treasure not be locked away for only the greedy monks to behold. Their adjudication is to freely offer the Ring of Crowned Kings to any man willing to give his life for it on the killing floor of Jhans! The rules are simple; to possess it you must FIGHT for it!" The Rules Winning: To capture the R.O.C.K. you must possess it upon getting your invitation to the Isle and you must successfully defend the R.O.C.K. for at least one turn prior to leaving for the Isle. Turnovers: Dark Arena losses, losses to stand-ins, tournament deaths, successful captures, and inactivity will cause the R.O.C.K. to drop to the lowest ranked warrior in the arena that turn. Foul Shots: Ahh, treachery abound! It wouldn't be a DOOMcorps event without a little something for the haters! We present to you the ultimate denial: Any graduating warrior that strips the R.O.C.K. from a defender on their last turn in the arena is not eligible to defend and capture the R.O.C.K. Therefore, the R.O.C.K. drops to the lowest ranked warrior in the arena that turn. Scorekeeping: DOOMcorps will actively monitor the progress of the R.O.C.K. but we will not inform the arena of its status on a turn by turn basis. We will keep a running list of who held the R.O.C.K. each turn for historical purposes on our website. However, both methods of tracking are done at our leisure. If you want the R.O.C.K. it's your job to know who currently possess it. Laying Claim: It is your right to claim your fortunes along with your fame upon successfully capturing the R.O.C.K. When we say it's your right we actually mean it's your duty. DOOMcorps will not proactively chase you down to award you with your prize. After capturing the R.O.C.K. you have until the duedate of the next turn to claim your prize via the Jhans PA's or the DOOMcorps.com Forums. There will be no exceptions to this rule and the methods previously mentioned are publicly viewable with timestamps. Prizes: The legend foretells that he who possesses the Ring of Crowned Kings will amass a grand army. DOOMcorps was able to translate the legend into more technical terms and it seems that a grand army equates to 20 team roll ups. Give or take a few depending on whether any of them have double 21's or our opinion of you! What other arena actually pays you back for kicking ass? Wanna be a R.O.C.K. Star? It's easy; all you have to do is pick it up and take it to the hizzy! SPY REPORT It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last week's fights. For every winner there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at BABES, who went down to 3rd from 10th. Life is tough. Coming up with a solid 3-1-1 outing, THE FALLEN has advanced 3 places in the rankings. Going for the gusto and coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was THE CRAFT's PRINCE OF LIES, who was turned away from the Duelmastership by OBSIDIAN. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay. Here is other news that is of note. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid THE FALLEN, please raise you hand. Wow. Does JHANS really have that many liars? For those of you who like math, try this one: THE FALLEN + Weapons That go Boom = LEGENDARY BASTARDS + Avoid City. Well just about everybody wants a piece of HURLEY OAKJAW, who was this week's most challenged warrior. In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, FORMEL went after CHINGO BLING, who was higher by 20 points. Well, when the dust settled, FORMEL won victory over CHINGO BLING. Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! This round goes to VOW TO DESTROY, their 9-5-2 warrior, OBSIDIAN slew the 8-2-0 PRINCE OF LIES. Stay tuned next week to see what happens. Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what happens. I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. Hasta la bye-bye.
