DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
It was 12 years ago when I first fought here. Back then there were long running
teams in Jhans with 600 fights and 20 kills. They were Legendary Bastards, 5440 of
Fight, Helter Skelter and Anarkysts. Some of the famous managers back then were Doc
Steele, Maddog, Shadowgate, Rascally Rabbit, Anarchist and Terrablood. I guess that
is before Terrablood retired to run his website full time. Anyway, my brother
Khavaras went off to fight in Talahya and my manager decided that Valakoth and I
could retire. At first it was all fun. We went to the inn every night and drank
ourselves stupid. But the next thing we knew we were both married and had a family
full of kids to care for. There is nothing that makes you want to fight in the arena
more than being stuck in a small house with young children in the middle of winter.
Therefore, I have come out of retirement to see if I still know how to swing a sword.
Now I want to fight someone who has some actually talent. I tire with boring
adventurers and merchants. Jorja, let me battle Chester Grell so that we can see who
the best warrior in Jhans truly is! -- Rhakaras, Duelmaster, Temple of Steel
SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of JHANS! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team MIDDLE WAY 17 was unseated
this week as DEVIATION moved up from 3rd ranking to take the top spot with a 4-1-0
record for the round. GORAN KOBLINZ caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as he skillfully bested MEGATRON and was awarded 14 points in recognition.
In one of the week's more notable duels, GORAN KOBLINZ put down MEGATRON, causing him
to lose 13 points of recognition in the process. Not for nothing has RHAKARAS in the
past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week he's proven his combat
skill yet again. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained
their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps?
Many and various are the arts of battle. In JHANS "art" is a word that has long
since passed from the language! JHANS, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names
of thy guilds is TEMPLE OF STEEL, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly
duels. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the
better part of last week avoiding TEMPLE OF STEEL. Indeed it was SERPENTS HOLD.
Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that
many fighters are after HILDRETH LAMONT. Watch your back!
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Some say a warrior is judged by the way
he bears arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!

"DARK ARENA" -- The Novel
For centuries, the Shagornan Elves have been forced to live underground.
Human invaders, the Delarquans, burned their forests, sparking a war of elven
annihilation. The elders told tales that when the Delarquans marched to war
against the elves, the land itself bled as they passed. Since the war, the
elves have dwindled with every passing year, while the humans multiply like
rodents across the land of Alastari.
Now, the Delarquans have disappeared. Some say they departed, others indicate
it.s a ruse, but there have been whispered rumors of another greater threat
looming in the region. Khyron of the Shagornan Elves has been tasked to
determine the cause, realizing that failure is probable and at the end of the
road death could be the only reward.
Khyron has known only the safety of the caves, but now he must journey to the
world above...the World with No Ceiling.
Throughout the years, many fine writers have played Duelmasters/Duel II and have
contributed greatly to the history and background of the world of Alastari. One very
intense period, during the early '90's, was during the Rocanis War, when authors from
both the Delarquan and Free Blades arenas collaborated on writing the history of the
invasion of the arena-city of Rocanis. Mark Manley (aka Grimwood) is a long-time
manager in Rocanis, and was one of the writers who contributed so much to this
history. Over the subsequent years, he has worked to bring his novelization to life
and make the story of the War and the preceding events which led to it available to
the greater public. Many Rocanis legends appear in the book: Itoz Trollbane,
Sandstorm, and others. The novel is a treat to read--even more so if you are familiar
with the game!
