"Egan, you can't leave!" Gabria Hand snatched a folded shirt out of Egan's
traveling bag and shoved it back into a drawer.
He moved the satchel out of her reach. "Why would I want to stay here?"
"To help me keep a lid on Myron and Ulrik. They just keep getting worse and
worse--"
"Send 'em to the Dark Arena, then. But I didn't know you cared about the team
record that much," Egan said.
"What? The RECORD? Of course I don't care about that! Well, not much, anyway.
It would be good if we could break even here, pay all the bills and not have to live
on credit so much. I hate that."
"Yeah, well, so do I. That's why I want to leave," the new Lord Protector
retorted. "I don't like having to look over my shoulder half the time, wondering if
some loan shark will be sending his knee-breakers after us."
"They wouldn't do that...would they? If someone gets hurt so bad they can't
fight, there'd be NO way to pay them off, after all."
"Like hell there wouldn't," Egan growled. "There's sharks around here that
would just LOVE to get their hands on a slave gladiator. Which is what anyone would
be who got too deeply into debt."
"But--"
"They'd throw fights so far you'd need a pack of hounds to find 'em." Seeing
his friend's blank look, Egan explained, "They want to throw fights and bet on sure
things. But for that, they need gladiators who are absolutely in their power."
After a moment's pause for thought, he added, "Or a really crooked manager...."
Gabria frowned. "I don't believe there are any managers here that would do
that. Or let it be done against them, for that matter. So--"
"Probably not, even if we have got a Criminal Element and a bunch of Darque
warriors in the arena here. But on an individual basis, I think it might be
happening."
"Surely the managers wouldn't allow--"
"Surely a gladiator that got into a deep bind for cash wouldn't TELL his...or
her manager!" Egan was silent for a moment, then said, "You might want to talk to
Sela."

"I can't! I can't do that," Sela protested. She always felt like a moth on a
pin when she had to come here. She stood in a cone of light in the middle, at least
she thought it was the middle, of a dark room. She had never seen the man she talked
to. Sometimes she thought it might be a different man at different times, but his,
or their, voices were oddly distorted.
"You know that we will not tolerate disobedience," the man said. His voice was
calm, and very, very cold.
She knew. "It isn't that," she protested. "Sure, I can lose so you can bet on
the other warrior. But winning isn't something I can turn on and off. Losing is
easy. I don't know if I have the skill to win."
"Here is something that will help," the man said. A packet landed at her feet.
"The root must be chewed. Do so half an hour before the fight, and leave the rest to
us."
SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly XOCHITHLAN games. Former top team THE MIDDLE WAY was
unseated this week as CHEAP SHOTS moved up from 5th ranking to take the top spot with
a 4-1-0 record for the round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the
corner! Witness how this week CHEAP SHOTS went 4-1-0 to move up 4 in the rankings.
DAMOK caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested
ULRIK VORN and was awarded 18 points in recognition. In one of the week's more
notable duels, DAMOK put down ULRIK VORN, causing him to lose 15 points of
recognition in the process. Although ANGELOST made a valiant effort, it did not
suffice to topple the reign of victorious B.A. TURRY. Informants "close" to the city
champion have told me that he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor.
Watch out!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. My inside sources tell me that the
team to beat in XOCHITHLAN these days is CRIMINAL ELEMENT. At least, most blades in
town are looking to avoid them. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been
hard pressed to find any of CHEAP SHOTS last week. Busy avoiding CRIMINAL ELEMENT?
Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. ZOOLANDER take
warning! You have more than a few enemies in XOCHITHLAN.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. The warrior's path is harsh. For
mediocrity there is but one reward--death. This past week WALLEN YO, at 5-6-0,
departed XOCHITHLAN forever. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable
with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Sadly warriors, now longer can I keep thy
company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till next we

An Announcement Concerning the Brotherhood of the Blade Alliance:
I have chosen to withdraw my membership from the Brotherhood of the Blade
alliance. The years I have spent in the alliance have been the best of my DM career.
I leave the alliance with many great friends and will always remain close to my
former brethren.
The Brotherhood of the Blade will not skip a beat without my membership. It
remains in very capable hands and its roster is among the strongest in the game.
With the return on some of its founding members to DM, I know the BOB will continue
