Shamu sprawled on the pile of leather and grimaced as the wagon jolted into and out of a pothole. Both Dwarves bounced and rolled. "This is just about unacceptable." "It could be worse," Smeds offered. "They could be GREEN hides instead of tanned ones!" "Yuck," the Cliffhomer said absently. "But that wasn't what I meant--the road. How can we expect to send dozens, maybe even scores of wagons over a road like this? They'd be shaken to bits if they hurried, and the ice would melt if they didn't." "These are the roads we've got to work with," Smeds answered. "And they aren't THAT bad." An especially deep set of ruts sent them bounding wildly over the back of the wagon. "Okay, maybe they ARE that bad, but they're STILL the roads we have to work with." He was silent for a moment, then shrugged--and grabbed for the side of the wagon as it rocked and tilted over more ruts. "This wouldn't be so bad if we hadn't had two weeks of rain to make really big muddy ruts, and then a couple of months dry, you know. Maybe if it rains again--" "Oh, joy, wagons stuck in the mud from Khalhums to Valamantis." Shamu frowned at the road and at the forest passing on the left (the Feyranse River was on the right). There was nothing like a technical problem to get a Dwarf thinking. "We need to corduroy the road. There are trees enough. Organize parties to work out of Mordant in both directions, and the road might be passable by the time the ice wagons are coming down." "A corduroy road won't last," Smeds warned, "not where the ground's as wet as it is here. The logs will rot." "It'll last all summer, at least, and that's all we need. If we haven't gotten enough cold water to Old Valamantis to wash out those bloodstains by then, we're going to be in too much trouble to worry about the road." Smeds sighed and then laughed. "I can't BELIEVE we're taking Debby Tonte's advice on this!" "Well, nobody else had any suggestions at all." Nobody paid attention to them when they entered the resurrected city of Old Valamantis, but that wasn't reassuring. There were a lot of people around, more than they'd expected, and somebody SHOULD be paying attention. "It's a trap," Ka D'Argo muttered. "They know something we don't. Something that means we're walking right into the frying pan." "So what?" Goblin asked. "We know something THEY don't, too. Something that means anybody who attacks US is in for a really big surprise." The Kaltosian gladiator fingered his sword and bared his pointed teeth in a hungry grin. "I hope they start something SOON." "I don't," Sputter grumbled. "Better to put off till tomorrow the blows you can avoid today. And spells are even worse." "They won't attack us until we get near the arena," Tensekai said. The Silver Mage squinted at the sky, which was a dome of glaring white haze, and then at the battered wall of the Bloodgames arena looming over the lesser structures a mile away. "Okay, they might attack physically before then, but...I think they'd rather have our blood spilled close to the center of their spell-working." "So our blood can feed their spells, too? Great, just great. What I always wanted to do," Lavender Lance said. She sighed heavily. "And I'm SURE they won't appreciate us properly." She drew herself up into a stance that had made more than one male gladiator falter at the wrong moment as pearly flesh strained against violet lace. "I've heard that wizards are BLIND to the finer nuances." Tensekai coughed and wrenched his gaze away, blushing. "Not all of us," he said in a strangled voice. "Not...BLIND, anyway." "I really don't think we should be doing this," Alta Chess muttered. She looked back over her shoulder at the patchwork wall of modern Valamantis longingly. "I don't WANT to be doing this...." "Nonsense! Don't be such a coward, Alta," Chip Enser said. "This is ADVENTURE. Things are HAPPENING in Old Valamantis. Do you want to be nothing more than a SPECTATOR?" "Wizard things," his teammate countered. "And what do we know about wizard stuff? Yeah, I'd lots rather be just a spectator. Lots rather." "There's gladiators involved in this; it isn't ALL wizards. And not all of them are Lord Protectors, either." Chip sighed ostentatiously. "I suppose I couldn't expect better from a GIRL. But we can at least get close enough to WATCH, can't we?" * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 499): TALON of FLOYDS FAN CLUB (Talon Volksie, mgr.) Surprise to all, I'm still here, but it was Miss Con Duck who was sent to the sin bin on the Isle of the Eye. Her all so exciting particulars are 9-11(1)-10-14(1)-18(1)- 12-13 Parry Strike, with AdEx's in Decise (-1) and Parry (mode), nothing else on 49 learned skills. Favourites are Broadsword (Doesn't quite have the Strength for that yet), Very Low-Moderate, learning Decise skills. She will be off to retirement on the great pond around the Isle. Duck Tape Ducks Unlimited Still holding this place together SPY REPORT Hail XOCHITHLAN! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your deeds. It seems the training can make the difference, as ATMAN PROJECT is pushed out of top team by THE MIDDLE WAY, who came from 3rd with a 5-0-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for ATMAN PROJECT, whose 1-4-0 this turn dropped them by 5 into 6th. WITLESS WONDERS stable has parlayed this turn's 4-0-0 into a 3 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 5th place. Good work, guys! The THE MIDDLE WAY guild has had a 5-0-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, PEKING DUCK fought SOLL I. TARRY and gained 17 points and contributed to DUCKS UNLIMITED's 3-2-1. BREY KINENTER has lost to QUIA RAYNE, falling 14 points, while helping make CRIMINAL ELEMENT a 1-4-0 turn. This week's Duelmaster bout was between MYRON NAGEL and our Duelmaster DUCK TAPE, making a challenge. And all eyes were on MYRON NAGEL this turn as he ascended to the throne of Duelmaster. XOCHITHLAN has a new victor! By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The Warty Toad? I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher friend of mine assures me this is true. ATMAN PROJECT has cause to stand tall, as they were XOCHITHLAN's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who avoided ATMAN PROJECT stable the most? Believe it or not, it was BEDOUIN KNIGHTS. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that ULRIK VORN from THE MIDDLE WAY was XOCHITHLAN's most challenged warrior this turn. The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace. Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. Had I not seen it, it would be hard to believe. MISS CON DUCK was sent to the Dark Arena and lived to tell about it! Makes you think, no? I guess it was coming sooner or later, DARQUE ANGELS has lost NAJENA, and XOCHITHLAN is bound to miss her. For a little while, at least. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well. Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare to fight bravely. Always good to rest in XOCHITHLAN, but never good to wear out my welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in XOCHITHLAN again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MYRON NAGEL 3316 28 21 0 118 THE MIDDLE WAY (385) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DUCK TAPE 3283 12 10 2 98 DUCKS UNLIMITED (143) ANGELOST 3415 12 5 1 93 DARQUE ANGELS (402) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME HOMEY CIDE 3594 11 5 1 89 CRIMINAL ELEMENT (379) OUTLAW STAR 3550 9 3 0 86 DARQUE ANGELS (402) LAHRS ENNY 3400 16 16 0 84 CRIMINAL ELEMENT (379) DAMOK 3538 12 12 0 82 WITLESS WONDERS (419) ULRIK VORN 3556 13 11 1 68 THE MIDDLE WAY (385) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME HOT AIR DUCK 3451 10 5 0 66 DUCKS UNLIMITED (143) FAISEL THE WISE 2580 7 4 0 61 BEDOUIN KNIGHTS (294) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LUMINOUS NIGHT 3340 10 14 1 56 ATMAN PROJECT (391) HABIB THE SLOW 2589 4 0 1 52 BEDOUIN KNIGHTS (294) WARRIOR NO 3417 7 5 0 47 ATMAN PROJECT (391) -THE FALLEN ONE 3416 8 8 2 44 DARQUE ANGELS (402) ABDUL THE VICIOUS 2521 6 5 0 44 BEDOUIN KNIGHTS (294) SHIFTING LION 3427 7 4 1 40 ATMAN PROJECT (391) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TYSON 3592 1 2 0 32 WITLESS WONDERS (419) QUIA RAYNE 3636 2 6 0 31 THE MIDDLE WAY (385) ABU THE TRICKY 2524 4 9 0 27 BEDOUIN KNIGHTS (294) DUCK A L'ORANGE 3607 2 5 0 27 DUCKS UNLIMITED (143) GIB HOLGIN 3611 4 7 0 26 THE MIDDLE WAY (385) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME PEKING DUCK 3632 1 0 0 17 DUCKS UNLIMITED (143) COWTOWN SNIPER 3660 1 0 0 15 WITLESS WONDERS (419) -ETRIGAN 3596 2 2 0 14 DARQUE ANGELS (402) ANUDDA BLOUD 3659 1 0 0 14 WITLESS WONDERS (419) KAHR, JACK 3637 3 3 1 13 CRIMINAL ELEMENT (379) POINT ZERO 3638 3 2 0 11 ATMAN PROJECT (391) ZED ARLEN 3653 2 1 0 11 THE MIDDLE WAY (385) BREY KINENTER 3650 2 2 0 9 CRIMINAL ELEMENT (379) -CLEO 3570 0 1 0 9 WITLESS WONDERS (419) SOLL I. I desperately need help with this. What I need are style, favorite rhythm (ex.: hi/low), favorite weapons, and tactics. What would be great is if you could send me a copy of the invite with the warrior's name, id#, and arena blacked out. This way, I can verify that this is an actual warrior. Minis will work, too! For those interested, I have both a challenge style vs. style and a match-up style vs. style chart. There's about 250 fights calculated in these charts, and I'll be happy to send a copy to anyone who asks. You can contact me (if you're a free world player) at: Rick Stringer, Merit/East, SCI, P.O.
