"What are you so gloomy about?" Gib Holguin demanded of his teammate. "That
wretched Nagel is finally leaving--"
"Oh, no, he is not!" Ulrik Vorn said, baring his teeth in what not even a mother
would call a smile. "He has assured Egan and Gabria that he plans to 'hang around
and help us train'. I won't have that smarmy snake looking over MY shoulder!"
"How you going to stop him?"
"I'm going to start by escorting him PERSONALLY to the edge of town," Ulrik
said.
Gib turned to look at the window. Nothing could be seen beyond it, because it
was dark, and rain poured down over the glass like a waterfall. "I'm kinda surprised
he's even thinking of leaving on a night like this."
"It's probably part of some kind of plot he's got in mind." Ulrik Vorn pulled
on a rain cape of waterproofed canvas. "It won't work." He checked his sword.
"I'll kill him if I have to."
"Uh...the orders were pretty clear, I thought. No killing between teammates,
not even any fighting with un-blunted weapons."
"Myron Nagel," Ulrik said, "is, gods help us, a Lord Protector. In a very real
sense, killing him is impossible. So he goes to the Isle in a box, who cares? Once
he gets there, he won't find it so easy to come back."
Gib caught up his own cape. "I'll come too. I want to see this."
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
Gib leaned close to his teammate and shouted in his ear, hoping he could be
heard over the thunder. "This isn't the way to the stage depot!"
A burst of lightning briefly revealed their surroundings: a street with water
running ankle-deep down the middle, ruined buildings down one side dating back to the
Rirorni War fifteen years ago, on the other side a blank wall with a crenellated top,
the stones scarred and worn uneven with age. Myron Nagel was walking along close to
the wall.
     Ulrik Vorn frowned. "That's--"
"Back wall of the palace!" Gib Holguin bellowed over the next crack of thunder.
At least, he thought that's what he said, but he didn't even hear himself. The
lightning must have struck close by, maybe one of the palace towers, and thunder came
down on them like an avalanche. Just before the light winked out, he saw Nagel lean
on the wall, which produced a doorway and let him through. He hurried forward,
blinded by the darkness, and stumbled against the wall himself, in the same spot, he
hoped. He thought. And he did fall through into someplace dry, so it must be right.
Someone landed on top of him. In the darkness, he couldn't tell who it was, but it
had to be either Ulrik or Myron, didn't it?
"That wasn't Nagel," Ulrik said. He rolled off Gib. "We need to get out of
here before someone finds us where we shouldn't be--"
"A little late for that." The voice was cool, not to say cold, and the bloom of
light that accompanied it blinded them for just too long. When their eyes cleared,
they were staring into a crossbow. A loaded, cocked crossbow in a very steady hand.
"Who are you and what are you doing here?"
"We're gladiators," Gib said. "We thought we were following somebody else,
must've lost him...maybe outside the Broken Tree? There was a crowd in the street...
and picked up you instead. Nothing personal. We don't know who you are, we leave
and forget we were ever on this street."
"Gladiators." The man rolled the word on his tongue. He had an accent, one
that was unfamiliar. "I have heard that gladiators can be hired...to do jobs
involving violence."
"I guess maybe some," Gib admitted cautiously. "But our manager frowns on
that."
"Too bad, because that's what you're going to do. Unless, of course, you want
to explain to a squad of King Feyen's guards what you're doing inside the palace at
night?"

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of XOCHITHLAN! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team THE MIDDLE WAY was
unseated this week as DARQUE ANGELS moved up from 3rd ranking to take the top spot
with a 4-1-0 record for the round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around
the corner! Witness how this week CRIMINAL ELEMENT went 3-2-0 to move up 3 in the
rankings. My praise to WITLESS WONDERS for their 3-1-0 week this time out. Indeed,
it was a skillfully fought round deserving of notice! KAHR, JACK caught the eye of
many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested GIB HOLGIN and was
awarded 17 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, KAHR,
JACK put down GIB HOLGIN, causing him to lose 15 points of recognition in the
process. Most watched of the fights this week, the spotlight was on WOOD GOLEM as he
bore arms against the Dark Arena Challenge of reigning Duelmaster DUCK TAPE. The
crowds were amazed this turn, as WOOD GOLEM killed the Duelmaster, DUCK TAPE, leaving
DUCKS UNLIMITED in mourning. With bloody hand ANGELOST has ascended to the throne of
champions. Is she that one which is spoken of in the ancient texts? Informants
"close" to the city champion have told me that he never fights without pantyhose on
beneath his armor. Watch out!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. XOCHITHLAN, city of gladiators!
Mighty among the names of thy guilds is DUCKS UNLIMITED, a guild shunned and avoided
by many in the weekly duels. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been
hard pressed to find any of CRIMINAL ELEMENT last week. Busy avoiding DUCKS
UNLIMITED? Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the
knowledge that many fighters are after TYSON. Watch your back! As a gladiator gets
older, the icy grip of fear lays hold of hers heart. True, ANGELOST? Who could miss
your "brave" challenge of HOMEY CIDE? Few would not have guessed the outcome of the
bout as HOMEY CIDE was defeated by ANGELOST. Is this what passes for courage in
XOCHITHLAN? SHIFTING LION must really be harboring a grudge against the DUCKS
UNLIMITED guild! Merciless, 17 challenged down DUCK A L'ORANGE points this week to
duel with he. All the city knows the duel went in favor of SHIFTING LION. I shall
not fail to spread the word in other cities of this "mighty" victory. A match that
raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that LUMINOUS NIGHT posted a
challenge against the more highly recognized DAMOK. The results, you ask? Well, the
firebrand LUMINOUS NIGHT was defeated by DAMOK. Remember warriors, this is the
discipline of steel.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins.
In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in XOCHITHLAN. Nice atmosphere you have here! Ahh, but I can hear the
spires of a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember: a
fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing
only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

All -- Sorry for missing last turn. I lost track of the MONTH! It's been busy and I
have been without my computer for about three weeks. As a result, I've been kinda
out of the DM loop because I couldn't keep myself updated as usual. All is normal
now...well, normal is such a relative term, but I hope you understand what it is I'm
trying to say. -- Master Darque

All -- Hey everybody. I've been inactive in the personals and in filling out
strategies for a while now. Well, I'm back, at least for this month and hopefully
longer. So luck to all on the sands. -- Fizban

Jinda -- Nice three turn record. Always nice to see a pretty lady get ahead. --
Fizban

Damok -- Wow, surprising win for me. Not so good in my latter years. Probably
something to do with my inferior wit. -- Lahrs

Duck Tape -- Methinks I never had a chance. Oh well. Thanks for the learns. --
Homey Cide

Warrior No -- When I try to jack you you don't say no and whip my butt. You calmly
accept your lot in life and move on. Sheesh! Read your script. -- Kahr Jack

Wait a minute...wait one stinking minute. When I joined this team I was specifically
told that all Middle Way Warriors were putzes. So what's the deal. Did someone
forget to tell you. Ack! -- Brey Kinenyer

Hot Air Duck -- Hmm, puncturing you--which is difficult to begin with--doesn't seem
to let the hot air out and cause your collapse. Perhaps I need to find a different
approach to this.... -- Ulrik Vorn
P.S. Ice cubes, to chill you? Or will the arenamaster let me bring a blind onto the
sands? There must be something.

Duck A L'Orange -- Gosh, who color-draped you? Orange is NOT your color. It makes
your complexion look all yellow. Unless you're bilious? Horrid thought, it means
those little blue pills, and they are so nasty! Don't be sick, just get a better
color, okay? -- Quia Rayne
P.S. Mint green?
P.P.S. I didn't know ducks got caponized. How awful.

Peking Duck -- If I told you once, I told you once, I don't like Peeking Toms! Or
Ducks, either. Just don't even THINK about looking in there again! -- Gib Holguin

Brey Kinenter -- The door was unlocked, you know. We keep open house at our place.
-- Zed Arlen
