They were in a tricky situation, no doubt about that. If this man wasn't prepared to believe the innocence of their presence, what chance would they have of convincing a bunch of guards who were professionally paranoid? But if they were required to commit some violent crime to conceal their presence here, he'd just as soon the crime in question was the killing of this man. After all, he'd been sneaking around, too, and he'd entered the palace compound in a suspicious manner. Yeah, maybe a pact of mutual non-talking about the encounter would get them-- "It would be an honor to serve you, Prince Veythan," Ulrik Vorn said. If the situation had been less grim, less balanced on the hair trigger of the crossbow, Gib would have cursed. He'd never seen Prince Veythan, but he knew the name. King Feyen's brother and rival, the man who had tried to usurp the throne of Xochithlan at the end of the Rirorni War, and had nearly succeeded. Being found inside the palace without authorization would be bad; being found in the company of Veythan would be fatal. From the lack of storm-sound, Gib figured the hidden door they'd come in by must be shut. It had been invisible on the outer side, would he be able to see it--and get it open quickly--if he whirled now? "Your friend is less certain of the honor," Veythan said. Ulrik turned suddenly and drove his fist into his teammate's belly. As Gib folded up, Ulrik hit him on the head with the pommel of his sword. Gib collapsed. "He is of no consequence," Ulrik said. "Lock him up somewhere until a spell of forgetfulness can be arranged." "I see I was correctly informed," the Prince said. "You gladiators are decisive and violent. Very well, I will accept your service. Follow me, and bring that fool with you. Even fools have their uses." They walked for a long time, or so it seemed to Ulrik Vorn, who was carrying his much larger teammate. Sometimes they crossed open courtyards in the pouring rain, though not often, sometimes they walked through wide but dusty halls. More often, they moved along narrow, ill-lit passages concealed in the thick walls of the palace complex. The place was a maze, but Prince Veythan never hesitated. Of course, he'd grown up in this palace. There were a lot of steps down, many more than there had been steps up. It seemed likely that they were underground by now. As a rule, elves had no use for subterranean construction, but Ulrik remembered his teammates mentioning the discovery of a system of tunnels and cisterns under the area. And a ruler always needed dungeons. "What I want from YOU, dear boy, is a report." Queen Arilie frowned prettily. In fact, all her expressions were pretty, because she was pretty, very pretty in a candy-box sort of way, blue eyes and golden hair and rosebud lips and skin like fresh cream. She even had the "blonde manner." Unfortunately for those who crossed her, all this prettiness concealed a will of iron and a ruthless self-interest. Prince Veythan shrugged. He supposed he did owe Arilie something, since she had allowed him to use her court as place of asylum after the failure--due to the interference of gladiators, curse them!--of his attempt to seize the throne of Xochithlan fifteen years ago. But he had repaid her several times over for that, by squelching--decisively--attempts by HER relatives to seize HER throne. If she didn't start treating him as an equal, he would-- He checked his thoughts quickly and shot a glance out of the corner of his eye at Pogo, the Queen's Magician. Gods, the things royalty were reduced to these days! Pogo--that was probably not his real name, but it was the kind of nickname Arilie WOULD come up with--was, not to put to fine a point on it, a savage. He didn't know where Arilie had found the creature, some southern jungle, probably. With the decay of the Arcanum, only a prancing savage slaughtering chickens could be sure of the results of his spell. It was very nearly enough to make a person give up the use of magic entirely. Whether the witch-doctor could read his thoughts, Veythan didn't know, but he was taking no chances. "I have verified my means of access to the palace," Veythan said. "When the time is right, I will be able to reach Feyen with... whatever gifts we have for him. That is, I think, all you need to know... dear lady." "You haven't told me HOW you got in, though!" "Certainly not! The secrets of the palace of Xochithlan are the property of the ruling house of Xochithlan. I would be remiss if I were to reveal them to an outsider, however well disposed she might be." He smiled. "When I am king in Xochithlan and you are my queen, it will be a different matter. Then, nothing shall be hidden from you." Including, he vowed silently, the inside of the dungeons. "But I don't remember!" Gib Holgin wailed. He winced in anticipation as one of the guards reached for a club. "I was at a party at the Broken Tree, and there was a fight, and that is absolutely the last thing I remember! Look, get a mage or something, someone who can tell you that I'm not lying!" The captain of the guards, an elf with a cheesy little mustache copied from that of King Feyen, curled his lip in a magnificent sneer. "A safe thing to say, when no mage can tell the time of in a clock tower!" The elf slapped the end of his club against the palm of his own hand, winced, and shifted to swinging it back and forth. "You're probably in league with terrorists, or worse--" "What's worse than terrorists?" another guard asked. "It's a figure of speech," the captain snarled. "Shut up!" "Ducks are worse," Gib said, adding quickly, "I am not in league with Ducks--the only good Duck is dinner." "A likely story." But the guard captain's attention had been diverted from accusation. He leaned closer to his prisoner. "There's a rumor about that Ducks are going to attempt to dethrone King Feyen and take over the city. They say that some Ducks have become gladiators, and they're going to be the shock troops for this avian invasion. You're a gladiator, have you heard anything of it?" Gib blinked and improvised quickly. "Nothing to be sure of, but... there ARE a lot of Ducks becoming gladiators these days. I'm not in their confidence, of course, but one hears bits and pieces in the locker rooms at the arena--not that the Ducks have much use for hot showers! Oily birds." He lowered his voice for greater conviction. "They seem to be up to something...." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 507): THINREDONE of LAB EXPERIMENTS (The Mun, mgr.) It is I, Angelost, your friendly neigborhood Duelmistress with an address for the people of Xoch. . .X-town. We really should do something about getting an easier name to pronounce! To the people of X-town, I have to say you have a wonderful place here. I have yet to learn how to say the name, but I have never been the linguist. Master Darque is at a loss also. He can spout off ancient elven words, extra-planar mumbo jumbo, and arcane incantations, but the common tongue escapes him at times. For now, I'll just stick with X-town. To Homey Cide, I say this, sorry about the challenge, love. Master Darque needs to pay more attention to rankings and alliance mates. You know how easily confused he gets sometimes, actually most of the time, but I better not address that any further. He may get wind of this and turn me into a newt or some other unsavory creature. Not that I have anything against newts mind you, I just like me the way I am. My challenge goes to Lahrs Enny this time out. No surprise to anyone since he is the only Challenger Champion. We have met previously, but this should be a battle for the ages. If I am atop the throne once more, I will speak further. Until then, I bid adieu. Your Duelmistress, Angelost Darque Angels -- Vendetta Cartel -- Cosa Nostra SPY REPORT Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport. I doubt XOCHITHLAN will ever be the same. It seems the training can make the difference, as DARQUE ANGELS is pushed out of top team by CRIMINAL ELEMENT, who came from 2nd with a 4-0-0 this turn. And let's see, OPARA PERSI fought BLACK GUARD and gained 15 points and contributed to THE MIDDLE WAY's 2-3-0. ULRIK VORN has lost to OUTLAW STAR, falling 9 points, while helping make THE MIDDLE WAY a 2-3-0 turn. This week's Duelmaster bout was between LAHRS ENNY and our Duelmaster ANGELOST, making a challenge. We should ask LAHRS ENNY about the thrill of victory, and what being the new Duelmaster does for a warrior, he's now the one to ask. By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The Swinging Aardvark? Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.' Inscrutable, but true. I also notice that the ATMAN PROJECT stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on XOCHITHLAN, what are you afraid of? And guess who avoided ATMAN PROJECT stable the most? Believe it or not, it was DARQUE ANGELS. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that DAMOK from WITLESS WONDERS was XOCHITHLAN's most challenged warrior this turn. A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. I like this place, XOCHITHLAN, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. If you haven't ever TC'd at a tourney before, here is your chance. The contest will start Wednesday, December 1, 2004, but a chance will be given November 17 to dark arena, only, any warrior that you do not see fit to run in the contest. So now that I have your attention, here are the rules (like you didn't know they were coming sooner or later). 1. Any manager participating can enter one team, only. 2. No sandbagging whatsoever. (I will keep up with it, every turn.) 3. No teams or warriors will be allowed to run after contest starts. 4. All warriors will run until they lose three times, after three losses they are eliminated. 5. If a warrior sits out a turn, they are accounted with a loss in the contest. This is to keep warriors with winning records from sitting out until the end of the contest. 6. If a warrior is killed during the contest, the replacement cannot enter the contest. 7. If a warrior is killed, bloodfeuding is allowed, but only by a warrior that is active in the contest. 8. If a warrior is run after being eliminated, the manager is disqualified from the contest, no questions asked. 9. Challenges are legal, up or down. 10. Contest will keep going until 1 warrior is left without three losses, and that warrior, of course, is accounted the winner. 11. All managers participating will be asked to purchase a rollup certificate, to be awarded to the winners of the contest. <<<PRIZES>>> As I have already said, and according to participation, rollups will be awarded to the first and second place managers. So the majority and minority of the rollups will be determined when all are accumulated. Contest Champion--2 Faves prizes, and majority of rollup certificates Contest Runner-up--1 Faves prize, and minority of rollup certificates So once again I invite all managers old and new to participate in what should be a fierce and challenging contest. <<<REMEMBER, FIRST OFFICIAL TURN OF THE CONTEST IS DECEMBER THE FIRST, AND AS I SAID BEFORE, THE TURN BEFORE (NOVEMBER 17TH) YOU MAY DARK ARENA CHALLENGE ONLY!!! ANY WARRIOR WITH ANY FE (FIGHT EXPERIENCE) WHEN THE CONTEST STARTS WILL BE ELIMINATED FROM THE CONTEST.
