He should have remained in Morya till morning, but the storm had come up with no warning. Not even magical warning. It was an insult. He should have been warned. He should have KNOWN there was a storm brewing, especially one like this, clouds laced with magic, sizzling with raw spell energy. How had it been possible? The half-demon frowned, pulling his hooded cloak more firmly around himself against the ripping gusts. Could his Enemy have obscured the early stages of the build-up, especially to trick him into leaving shelter? Master Darque had many enemies, of course, that was a sign of his success. But at this moment, THE Enemy was only one person--the wizard Nishtar in Monuntial. "They" said he was a half-elf, but what was the other half? Could he be dealing with the machinations of another demon-born? It was beginning to seem all too likely. His mount stumbled. He hadn't wanted to ride a horse, but there had been no boats leaving Morya for the upriver ports. The horse hadn't wanted him to ride it, either, but no lesser animal was going to cause problems when Master Darque did not want problems. So if it was stumbling now-- Ah, hailstones. His cloak was proof against such simple missiles, but the horse had no such protection. "Master!" One of his dwarves rode up beside him and leaned close enough to be heard. "Master Darque, they say there are caves in those hills yonder!" He gestured at some low hills barely visible between the road and the shore. "They?" Darque's voice dripped scorn. Tyre, or it might be Sidon, in this murk, who could tell? knew better than quote an unspecified "they" as an authority. "The people in the last town, at the stable where we stopped for fresh horses." "Ah. You think we should seek this possible shelter, do you?" Darque squinted against a sudden burst of lightning. That was actually not a bad idea. He didn't enjoy the weather, even when his cloak and his powers protected him from the worst effects. And a demon had to think of his followers just as much as a man did; treat them badly, and the wretches would return the favor. "Very well. Let us seek one of these caves, then. Lead on." Caves. Pfui! A resort for beasts. At least, being dwarves, his guards should have an instinct for this sort of thing. They'd probably feel quite at home in a cave. The dwarf rode ahead. Tyre and Sidon had been as reluctant to mount horses as he had himself. Ah, well, if worst came to worst, they could always eat the beasts. A cheering thought. The one in the lead signaled to the other almost at once. Darque nodded. They DID have an instinct for these things. There were trees and uneven ground as soon as they left the road. The horses didn't seem to mind. And then the slopes of hillsides, tipped this way and that. And then shelter from the wind and the rain, so suddenly that it was a shock. Darque sensed enclosure, smelled the raw stone. A cave, as promised. He removed himself from his horse, leaving it for his bodyguards to tend in whatever way seemed appropriate, and turned to look back out at the storm. The cave was near the lake and had a view out across the water. Just now, the view of the storm was impressive, if one cared for storms. Master Darque did not. He found the sight of all that power going to waste on a mere natural phenomenon offensive. Especially now, when the Arcanum was in such a desperate state. Especially when he could tell that a good portion of the power being expended in sheets of violet lightning was magical. Could Nishtar be so profligate? No. He didn't have that much power to waste, whatever his parentage. NO wizard had that much power to waste. The image of a city that was not Morya hung over the raging waves, rippling like a painting on silk. Darque studied it for several minutes. He had heard of the "ghost city" of Lake Moruchei. It was said to have appeared several times in the past few years. But it did nothing, portended nothing, and he had not pursued the matter. Still, since it was here in front of him, and he had nothing better to do while he waited for the storm to cease, he would learn what he could. Definitely it was not Morya. The buildings were of some white stone, marble, probably, which most of Morya was not. And the architecture was different. Lighter, more graceful. More "elvish," as humans would say. Slender towers, airy bridges between them, fluttering banners. That sort of thing. No people were visible, but they wouldn't be at this scale. The Ghost City was probably as far away, visually, as the center of the lake from here, ten or fifteen miles, he supposed. The lightning flashed around and between the towers. It struck one of the delicate bridges, which shattered. Darque's eyebrows rose. Amazing. The storm, which was definitely in the world of Ghea and Lake Moruchei, was ALSO in the world where the Ghost City existed. Because the city must exist, or it could not suffer destruction of that kind. And if the city existed, somewhere, then it was worth knowing more about. The half-demon glanced around for a place to sit. His two bodyguards were staring past the horses, deeper into the cave; they were silhouetted against a greenish light. If there was power there, it was "cool"; he could sense nothing from the light. Curious. Very curious. Darque made a gesture of warding, in case there was more to the light than he could detect. Well, there must be more to it, if it was there at all. He left the cave's mouth and moved past the dwarves and the horses, deeper into the green-lit darkness. The source of the light was easy to find, around the first bend. It came from a symbol inlaid into the wall of the cave. It was not a symbol he had ever seen before, and his knowledge was extensive. There was a slight resemblance to some sigils he had seen in a Folstrom manuscript that was four thousand years old. But this was less cluttered and, he suspected, more powerful. What did it do, and why had no one seen it before now? Or had it been discovered in the past, and its discoverers destroyed? Moryan peasants might have found this cave, perhaps. Darque snorted. He had skills and protections that no Moryan peasant could match. A bolt of lightning as brilliant as the sun struck behind him, wrapped in its thunder, and filled the cave with white light, blinding him even though he was turned away from it. Tyre or Sidon cried out, and the horses screamed in terror. Darque knew that none of them had been injured, or he would smell the burned flesh. He waited for his eyes to recover. The brilliant afterimage faded, leaving darkness just brushed with red light from behind. A glance behind showed him that a tree just outside the cave was burning. Looking back into the depths of the cave there was only darkness. The symbol had vanished. No matter, it was burned into his memory. He stretched out the toe of one small foot and traced the symbol in the sandy floor of the cave. Yes. That was correct. There was an extensive library in the palace in Xochithlan, more extensive than most people knew. He would look for the symbol there, in the oldest scrolls. This journey had seemed tedious in the beginning, a duty visit to his teams in Morya, Xochithlan, and Illis. Now...now he was looking forward to it. Uncle Wolf squinted at the sky. It was pale a blue as a bird's egg, washed clean by the storm. The lake reflected it as a sheet of silver. "You'd think there'd never been a storm, not so much as a sprinkle of rain," he said. Ghost Dancer reined his pony to one side of the road, which was a smooth and shining ribbon of mud. He had already ridden into one such patch, and his horse's legs were muddy to the knees. "I wouldn't think it. Why are we out this early?" "What's wrong with being up early? You getting soft on the Isle, boy? Or up too late last night, partying?" "Uncle Wolf...." The old man shrugged. "I don't know why you're here, but I'm out here because I need to be. I don't know why, exactly. But I haven't survived forty-five years as a shaman by not listening when my bones talk to me." Ghost Dancer looked around uneasily. Fields and orchards were emerging from the early mist on their right. On the left, the surface of the lake rippled as ducks settled into the water. There was no breeze. No other people out yet, nor any sign of human activity beyond the road itself, and the fence rows. It should be peaceful. After a moment, he indicated a tree-clad hill near the shore. "There's something over there." "Not now," Wolf said. "But there was something last night. Or someone." His shoulders twitched. "Something that made a ripple in the Spirit Land. That's what you're feeling." He urged his horse toward the trees. "That's what got us out here." "If it's gone, whatever it was, what can we do?" Ghost Dancer asked, following. The old shaman shrugged. "We'll see." Master Darque glared at the horse. "We'll abandon it." Before Tyre could speak, he added, "And yours and Sidon's as well. I will convey us to Xochithlan magically." "I thought that took a lot of magical power," Tyre said, looking up from his examination of the horse's leg. "You said you wanted to save it for--" "For the moment when I decide to use it. That moment is now. Get anything you want off your saddles and we'll go now." Darque frowned into the distance. There was no point in cursing the state of the Arcanum. It had already been cursed, by the Grey Witch's mismanagement. "We're in line-of-sight of Spirit Ridge near Rocanis, that will help. We'll be in Xochithlan by tomorrow." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 512): GOOEYDUCK of LAB EXPERIMENTS (The Mun, mgr.) Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your deeds. The DUCKS UNLIMITED guild has had a 3-1-1 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, DUCK A L'ORANGE fought SOLL I. TARRY and gained 13 points and contributed to DUCKS UNLIMITED's 3-1-1. SOLL I. TARRY has lost to DUCK A L'ORANGE, falling 12 points, while helping make CRIMINAL ELEMENT a 3-2-1 turn. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and HOMEY CIDE remains XOCHITHLAN's top warrior for another turn. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Welcome Wench until they win. Maybe? Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.' Inscrutable, but true. CRIMINAL ELEMENT has cause to stand tall, as they were XOCHITHLAN's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who avoided CRIMINAL ELEMENT stable the most? Believe it or not, it was DARQUE ANGELS. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that QUIA RAYNE from THE MIDDLE WAY was XOCHITHLAN's most challenged warrior this turn. In a brave attempt, MAGUA from MY UNDOING challenged up 23 points to fight ZED ARLEN from the THE MIDDLE WAY stable. MAGUA perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was beat by ZED ARLEN and ended up with 9 recognition points. A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. I like this place, XOCHITHLAN, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy.
