"That's torn it," he repeated. "But they must see that what Bluesnake has proposed is the same thing he told them you would do--that HE be the one to hold the Sword and decide on its use," Ghost Dancer protested. "Of course they don't see it!" The speaker was Rain Caller of the Haimgedai, the oldest shaman present. "Bluesnake is appealing to their emotions, not their minds. If they have any minds," he added bitterly. "It was like this before, when the Great Khan said he would make all the tribes great and lead them to trample Alastari under their horses' hooves. Some tribes were completely destroyed in that war. Many will never be so strong as they once were. Where are the Tilvagedai today, or the Skaevalgedai?" "We cannot go back and change the past," Wolf said. His tone was so sharp that Ghost Dancer wondered if that had been suggested to him at some point. "We can only learn from it." Rain Caller glared at him from under snow-white brows. "Easy to say, hard to do. What is your plan?" Wolf turned to scan the whole assembly of shamans before speaking. Then he shrugged. "If I thought we could kill Bluesnake, here and now, I would attempt it. At this moment, he is a greater enemy to us than Volundagh and the Sword." "The others wouldn't stand for--" the old man began. "Which is why I'm not doing it." Wolf glanced at the group around the Saarda again, and his lip curled into a sneer worthy of his totem animal. "Did you think I held off out of fear of Bluesnake?" Rain Caller snorted. "None think that who know what happened at the Buffalo Gate." Then he sighed and added, "But many of the young men do NOT know of that." Wolf swept that away with a gesture and turned to his younger companion. "Go find Redfox, Ghost Dancer. Bring him to me here." Ghost Dancer went, but reluctantly. He had never heard of a Buffalo Gate, and he had hoped that one or the other would tell that story. How could he learn if such information was not passed along? + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Darque Tale #6 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Xochithlan: Raigavor stared up at the wall and counted from the corner, "A turret, a turret, a downspout, a turret, two gargoyles, and... there!" He stepped forward and tapped gently on a stone at shoulder level which differed from the ones around it only in a faint shadow-pattern that seemed to underlie the surface. No, Master Darque decided it was actually a fossil of something like a snail with tentacles, maybe two inches across. There was a soft musical note, enough delayed that it didn't seem to belong to the tapping. Raigavor tapped again, several taps with irregular spacing, probably a code. The half-demon memorized it automatically; you never knew when you might need somebody else's identifying code. The wall shimmered next to the stone and became an archway. Raigavor stepped through. Darque hesitated--no telling what was beyond, and was he supposed to follow blindly?--then stepped through behind him, a bolt of power gathered and ready to launch at need. A woman was standing in the space beyond the wall. A typical Shagornan elf, slender, moderately tall, haughty-featured, dark of skin and hair. She frowned at Raigavor. "I was not expecting you, wizard." Her tone made it an accusation. The Red Wizard shrugged. "I know. I like it that way. We've come to lend you a hand in your intrigues." Master Darque frowned. Why should he aid this woman? And he hated palace intrigue, unless it would increase HIS power. "Nothing more can be done without a master sigil," the woman snapped. Raigavor smiled, an expression that would have sent a normal human into screaming retreat. "I am aware of that. This gentleman possesses a master sigil. So if you have the assassins at hand--" Raigavor paused and shook his head. "I think you're unwise, Illayina. Kill your King Feyn if you wish--no loss there, but leave King Feyen alive here. The trouble that will be stirred up--" "The king of the two cities owes me a death," the woman said. "FEYEN owes me a death for killing my sister-self, Illaina. And the politics of Xochithlan and Kochilfan are not your concern. Do not meddle." Raigavor looked at her in silence for several minutes, his lips pressed together in a hard line and a frown gathering. "By killing Feyen," he said finally, "you will cause one of two things to happen--or both of them. You will increase Feyn's personal power, or you will precipitate a disaster in both cities. Or both. I do not see how either outcome can further your own desire to rule Kochilfan." Darque watched the argument develop with the academic interest of a spectator at a sporting event. From his studies he knew that certain parts of Alastari were "twinned" in an adjacent universe; clearly the sigil that he held in his mind had something to do with the linking of the two worlds. Well and good. It was not a common occurrence, but it did happen sometimes. The woman's motives he understood completely: revenge and a desire for power, though her ambition seemed curiously limited in scope. Only one city? And her disregard for the consequences of disturbing the linkage was short-sighted. Too obsessed with her revenge, no doubt. Raigavor was less obvious. He did not seem to want to rule the city--or any other that had been mentioned--himself. Thinking it over, Darque decided that Raigavor had spent too long as a court wizard. His motives were contaminated by that battle cry of good rulers and bane of ambitious magicians everywhere, "concern for the common weal." That was good to know; it was a weakness in the wizard that could be exploited at need. Good. Sooner or later, Darque knew that he would part company and purposes with Raigavor, and he did not like the idea of leaving an unneutralized enemy behind him. "Don't MEDDLE, wizard!" the woman said. Raigavor sighed and shrugged. "Do as you wish, then, Illayina. There's no separating a fool from her folly." He held up a hand to forestall another comment from her. "Let us just get on with our business." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 528): BRICK WALL of HOMICIDAL MANIACS (Nick, mgr.) Only four teams left here in Xochitlan, which is a quacking shame. The boss was not too pleased with the current flock of ducks we have here, and he was ready to simply graduate a couple of us and fold up the nest, but the last two additions are "interesting" to say the least, so for now, we will continue on. If I can hold the throne, it will be interesting to see just how long I can stay here and continue to fight. Duck A L'Orange Ducks Unlimited SPY REPORT Hail and well met warriors of XOCHITHLAN! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team LITERATI was unseated this week as CRIMINAL ELEMENT moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with a 3-1-0 record for the round. MANN SLAUGHTER caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested THE FALLEN ONE and was awarded 24 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, MATT RISIDE put down BEOWULF, causing him to lose 19 points of recognition in the process. This time victory fell to the grasp of the usurper. All hail OUTLAW STAR, Duelmaster of XOCHITHLAN! No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps? Many and various are the arts of battle. In XOCHITHLAN "art" is a word that has long since passed from the language! I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this week's challenge seeking began. LITERATI is feared. This much I can say. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last week avoiding LITERATI. Indeed it was DUCKS UNLIMITED. Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. MS D. MEENER take warning! You have more than a few enemies in XOCHITHLAN. Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more than its fair share of red in recent times. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME OUTLAW STAR 3550 12 7 1 103 DARQUE ANGELS (402) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME HOT AIR DUCK 3451 16 8 0 99 DUCKS UNLIMITED (143) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DUCK A L'ORANGE 3607 9 7 1 90 DUCKS UNLIMITED (143) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME ETRIGAN 3596 8 3 0 66 DARQUE ANGELS (402) QUIA RAYNE 3636 9 15 0 65 THE MIDDLE WAY (385) PEKING DUCK 3632 9 1 0 65 DUCKS UNLIMITED (143) MANN SLAUGHTER 3688 8 3 2 60 CRIMINAL ELEMENT (379) MATT RISIDE 3705 8 1 0 60 CRIMINAL ELEMENT (379) THE FALLEN ONE 3416 12 11 2 59 DARQUE ANGELS (402) ANACONDA 3382 8 3 0 59 OPHIDIAN ORDER (328) KAHR, JACK 3637 12 10 1 58 CRIMINAL ELEMENT (379) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MS D. What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of selected arenas has become a far from fun experience. In other words Hammer has had it! The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from his planned sponsorship of any future contests. There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors. Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the time, effort and money spent over the past several years. May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today. Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history. 19 September 2005 I'd like to say hello to everyone I know that is still around after my being gone for five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord Xiang, D2-101 5 October 2005 To those once of Willaf -- It's time to come back to the sands.
