Rocanis:

     "No, you don't understand," Barudai the Scout said.  "This is what I found out,
and no one takes time to LISTEN.  Volundagh THOUGHT he had the Black Sword.  But--"
     Rain Caller, the old shaman of the southern Rirorni tribe of the Haimgedai,
stared.  "He LOST it?"
     The young scout shrugged.  "No one knows exactly what happened, but the priest
of Mytori who was sent to get it...didn't come back with it."
     "Did he come back at all?" Uncle Wolf asked.
     "No.  But the other priests don't think he took the Sword himself and, er, did
anything.  They didn't seem to know whether he couldn't find it, or had it taken from
him after he did find it, or just, well, lost it himself."
     "Hmm."  Wolf half-shut his eyes, listening to things that only another shaman
could hear.  "The Sword is awake, there is no question there."
     The other shamans, Rain Caller and Windrider, nodded.  "We hear it, too."
     "But it is not yet...active.  Has not chosen its Hand and gone to war,"
Windrider added.  "There is time to find it and stop it."
     "Find it, yes.  We must, of course," Wolf agreed.  "As to stopping it...how?  We
can't destroy the thing, it's the sword of a god.  It is beyond the strength of any
mortal."
     "Bind it and hide it--" Rain Caller began.
     "That is what was done before, according to the tradition I learned," Wolf said.
"It does not seem to have worked."
     "It worked for a while, for three generations," the older shaman said.  "That
may be all we can do, and it is better than doing nothing."
     "Better than letting Bluesnake get hold of it," Windrider added.
     After a moment of silent resistance, Wolf sighed and bowed his head.  "This is
true," he admitted.  "I could wish for a way to make a complete end to it, but there
is none that we could encompass."  He turned to the scout.  "What have you learned
that might suggest where to look for the sword?"
     The young man shrugged, looking uncomfortable with what he would have to say.
"It has been said that it was found near Taegskel some years ago, and then lost
again, or taken into hiding."
     The others all nodded.  Taegskel was a den of thieves on the coast south of
Bonsur; there were many renegade and refugee Rirorni there.  A few years ago, there
had been some very strange rumors about the place, but nothing obvious had come of
them, and the talk had died down.
     "After that, last summer it would have been, talk started about Volundagh and
what a great leader he could be, how he could unite the tribes and sweep the
Alastarians away--"
     "We tried that, fifteen years ago," Rain Caller said.  "It did not prove so
easy."
     "People want to believe it," Wolf said.  "And the young men now, those who are
seeking to establish their names, they don't remember that time."
     Barudai shrugged.  He barely remembered it himself, he had been no more than
five summers when the War had ended.  "The priests of Mytori said that a sign had
been given that Volundagh was blessed by their god--you heard?"
     "It was what started our worries again," Rain Caller said.  "We--I, at least,
hoped that the rumors of the Sword before were just talk."
     "It has still been no more than talk," Barudai said.  He sounded unconvinced, as
though he was only saying those words to be fair, not because he believed them.
     "So you did not see the Black Sword," Wolf said, "and you believe that no one
else in Volundagh's camp has seen it?"  When the scout nodded, he went on, "We must
find it before they do, and you may be sure they are looking."
     "If we go rushing off, it will look suspicious.  To Bluesnake if to not others.
We dare not raise questions," Rain Caller said.
     "WE cannot go rushing off," Wolf said, baring his teeth in something too hard to
be a smile.  "But...if a few gladiators were to go off, who would notice?  Gladiators
do that.  Especially those who have become Lord Protectors."  He fixed his eyes on
Redfox, who had been silent up to now.  "If you, and...two or three others, were to
go off, who would notice or care, eh?"
     "I knew this was coming," Redfox muttered.  He sighed.  "Okay.  I could probably
find some others.  Shanks Pony here in Rocanis--he's too young to realize what he
would be getting into, or too reckless, but he's graduated from the arena and is
available.  And I might find somebody else here, or in Trocar, or....  Hmm.  Yeah, I
can find the men, young enough to be willing, old enough to be of some use.  Where
would we go?"
     "Start at Taegskel.  You will have to track the sword by rumor, and by the signs
of its passage--by the men it has killed."  Wolf glanced around and bared his teeth
again.  "And take Ghost Dancer.  He is no shaman yet, but he knows enough to be of
use."

On the plains:

     Redfox turned in his saddle to look back toward Rocanis, but it had already
fallen out of sight behind the curve of the last hills.  There was nothing to see
except that rolling of the grassy land in all directions, nothing moving that he
could see.  A bird, maybe, at the limit of his vision.  He twitched his shoulders,
not quite a shrug.  "I think it's probably safe to talk now," he said.  He raised an
eyebrow at Barudai.
     Barudai, who called himself a scout and had functioned as a spy at need,
shrugged.  "We have to take some chances anyway," he said.  "But for the moment, yes,
probably no spies to hear us here."  He looked at Redfox, the oldest of the four
Rirorni.  "The shamans put you in charge.  What is our plan?"
     The older man laughed.  It sounded bitter.  "Plan?  You can't have a plan
without some facts."  He sighed and rubbed his face.  "Sorry, not your fault.  I
suppose we head for the last known location of the damned sword."
     "Taegskel?"  Shanks Pony sat a little straighter in his saddle.  "I've always
wanted to see that place."
     "Get a spyglass and turn it wrong way around, then look at a midden or an
anthill...or both," Ghost Dancer suggested.  "I have seen it, and I am not eager to
return there."
     "Then why go?  We're all volunteers," Shanks Pony began.  The other three
laughed.  He looked from one to another.  "We're not?"
     Ghost Dancer smiled a little.  "You are."
     "But--"
     "I've been on an 'adventure' before," Redfox said.
     "Right, that's why Uncle Wolf wanted you to go.  I heard him say so," Pony said.
     "Yeah, but you didn't hear me volunteering, did you?"
     "That's a selfish attitude," Shanks Pony said, but he sounded unsure of it.
     "No.  There are tens of thousands of gladiators on the Isle," Ghost Dancer said.
"Packed in like sardines in some parts of Talahya, and it would be GOOD for them to
get out and adventure, instead of leaving it to us few."
     Redfox laughed suddenly.  "No, if that's what they--or their managers--want to
do, I say let 'em do it.  They aren't hurting anyone else.  The Grey Witch seems to
be okay with it.  As for us...we're probably going to get into deep trouble at some
point, but today the sun is shining, it isn't cold or hot, we've got a lot of open
country to cover and good horses to cover it on, so let's enjoy--  Look out!"
     At which point Redfox, with better reflexes than many warriors his age could
boast, threw himself off his horse as a dark shape came screaming down out of the
sky.  The other three hit the ground seconds later, and their horses bolted, leaving
them afoot.
     Shanks Pony rolled over, trying to drag his sword free of its scabbard, and his
eyes widened.  It was big for a bird, but it had never hatched out of any natural
egg.  A flying war machine, maybe, made by a demented magician.  Vaguely bird-shaped,
claws like grappling hooks, even at the outer joint of the wings, and its wing-
feathers glittered along their edges like sword blades.  At least there was only one,
and the other three members of their party might be able to kill it while it was
destroying its first target.

     The room that Darque saw when the haze of transit cleared was unchanged.  Had
the Gate failed in its function?  No, the texture of the Arcanum was different.
Stronger, for one thing.  He tapped the nearest power-flow and savored the richness
and the full-spectrum flavor.  This is what an Arcanum SHOULD be like.  This world
was well-suited to his desires.  He would make it his own.
     He would.  But each step would be taken in its own proper time.  He had no
patience with those of his demon kin who embraced and exalted chaos.  In the long
run, Chaos was as much an enemy as Order, Good as much his enemy as Evil.  A balanced
neutrality and a close eye on his own benefit, that was what a world-conqueror
needed.  Not that he had any intention of engaging in the cruder forms of physical
conquest, at least, not personally.  That was for the minions.  He spared a moment to
regret leaving Tyre and Sidon, his bodyguards, behind.  There were probably local
creatures suitable for that role.  But he was used to the two dwarves, and as soon as
he was established here, he would bring them to him.
     So.  First?  Ah, first he would need...a haven.  A secure base and place of
refuge, in case there were problems, or simply to be able to rest and think without
interference.  Then, spies and minions.  He could zar the presence of many people,
oh, very many! within his range of perception.  Hundreds.  Enemies, or future
subjects of his rule?
     Time to go see.
     He swept a last look around the Gate room and found nothing there requiring
attention or retrieval.  He took a moment to fix the location of the place in his
mind, noting as he did so that the sigil was now gone.  But the Gate was...he could
only call it "alive."  So he wouldn't need the sigil, even if he decided to use the
Gate again--such as to bring Tyre and Sidon to this world.
     Getting out of the palace had not been difficult, although getting back in might
be.  Not finding his way, for a half-demon of his ability, that would be simple.  But
there were shells of protective energies.  They didn't exactly match any defensive
spells he knew, but that would have surprised him.  Details always varied from world
to world.  It was the strength of the spells, and their passive solidity that was
unexpected.  A quick investigation, cut short when he realized he was approaching an
alarm of some kind, suggested that these defenses were rooted in the Arcanum itself,
the magical bedrock of the world.  How odd.  Not a usual arrangement, and he could be
wrong due to turning aside before he triggered the alarm, but...how odd.  This was a
variant worth learning.  He would like to protect his own sanctum, once he found it,
with such impassable defenses.
     He gave a passing thought to Raigavor, who probably knew something about this.
In fact, almost certainly the Red Wizard knew; the defenses on his tower had been of
this type, now that Darque took a moment to study them in memory.  Although in that
case, also, his study had been less complete than he would have wished.  All the more
reason to begin his domination of this world without delay!  It was intolerable that
people should prevent him studying anything that intrigued him.
     He exited the palace into an alley much like the one that he and Raigavor had
used to approach it in that other world.  Cleaner, perhaps.  Less of the battered-
and-never-repaired look that was so depressing in Xochithlan.  If this city had
sustained something like the Rirorni War that had ravaged southern Alastari, there
had been more rebuilding.  All to the good, he would much prefer to rule a world in
good working condition.  It was more fun, and why else would a being seek such rule?
Master Darque was half-demon by birth and did not need a human's rationalization that
he would be doing it "for the good of all" or any other reason than because he wanted
to.
     Also, it was daytime, which he did not realize until he reached the mouth of the
alley and noted the traffic on the minor street.  His senses were adaptable to any
level of light or darkness and adjusted automatically so that an area was always
light enough for his needs, and he simply hadn't noticed.  He chided himself on that.
For now, until he was firmly established as a powerful player in the game of Control,
he would need to pay attention to ALL details.
     And one of those details was obvious now that he had a segment of the local
population under his eye.  There were other demons here!  None that he could zar were
as powerful as he was, but there were several near by.  And also beings of an exotic
nature:  reptilian bipeds, presumably intelligent.  Bimorphs of more than one kind:
werecats, werewolves, and more unusual forms.  Exotics for whom he had no categories.
And an uncountable horde of humans and elves.
     Excellent!  He would fit in well here, not attracting attention until he had his
lines of power firmly developed.  This world would be HIS.
     He wondered what Raigavor was doing,

     So why do I have this bag over my head?  Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and 
I'm going to give you a spy report!.  Coming up with a solid 0-0-0 outing, EVIL INC 
has advanced 4 places in the rankings.  Hey everybody, watch out for OPARA PERSI, who 
flew up 26 points in the rankings after mashing MS D. MEENER like a melon.  Keep your 
eye on this gal.  Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands.  MS D. 
MEENER was subdued by OPARA PERSI and drops 23 points.  Our battling duelmaster MATT 
RISIDE has managed to hold the title, fending off CHUCKLE's none too subtle advances. 
Better luck next time, CHEAP SHOTS.  Advice to bashers--never force anything, just 
get a bigger halberd!   
     Here is other news that is of note.  And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't 
avoid CRIMINAL ELEMENT, please raise you hand.  Wow.  Does XOCHITHLAN really have 
that many liars?  Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch CHEAP SHOTS' act in the 
arena.  Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from CRIMINAL ELEMENT.  Well 
dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, QUIA RAYNE would be president.  Although it 
may be a contest she doesn't want to win.   
     Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the 
most interesting, though!  Here's some advice:  warriors with little wit and will may 
encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.   
     Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in XOCHITHLAN have no 
sense of humor.  Or maybe that they were senseless.  Well, there goes another Spy

The Olympics have arrived!

The Mordanti Olympics, having been gone for six years, have returned to the Mordanti
Alliance, sponsored by Amicitia Primoris.  Teams have competed against each other for
recognition and notoriety four times in the past.  It is far past time for the fifth
Mordanti Olympics to be held.  The Mordanti Olympics shall be held in the Mordant
arena (DM-1) from May 1st (T544) through Oct 30 (T557).  There will be a
'registration period' lasting until T543, where teams will be allowed to register by
activating in Mordant and declaring their participation in the personals.  Rules will
be posted in the Mordant arena (DM-1) newsletter no later than T543, but shall be
available online before then.  An announcement will be made as to where they will be
posted.  Prizes will be awarded to the winners.
