It was one of those days when nobody was doing much or wanted to. Spring in the
air, maybe, but not strong enough to get people up and moving around outside. The
gladiators of the Middle Way were sprawled around the common room of their
guildhouse, on furniture that was shabby but comfortable. The door was open on the
yard behind the building, letting in lazy warm air and the distant sound of people in
other houses or out on the street. They all had mugs or glasses.
"We should maybe do a little practicing," Saml Tyne mentioned. He didn't get up
to begin, and when Xyokor Yahl came around with the bottle, he held his mug out for a
refill.
"What's the point?" Deela Ellis asked. "We'll either fight Kiwis and lose, or
standbys and win, and practicing won't make much difference."
"It's the principle of the thing." Saml didn't sound sure of that, or maybe he
just didn't care about it. "Too bad there isn't anything interesting going on."
Ohtar Paes sat up sharply, splashing his drink onto the floor; he ignored that
and it soaked into the worn boards quickly. A long way up, since he was a Shew.
"Don't SAY that! You could curse us all with an adventure."
"In a two-team arena?" Deela snorted. "Get real, Ohtar, there isn't a chance
of an adventure here. It's like that old saying, something about if a tree falls in
the forest and there's no one to notice, does it happen? Adventures don't happen in
two-team arenas. Not a chance."
"You don't need to sound so pleased about it," Saml said. "If something doesn't
happen, people will come along and bury us because we appear to be dead."
"You're so hot to do something," Deela said, taking a swallow from her glass,
"maybe you could go out and locate our new recruit who was SUPPOSED to have turned up
a month ago and didn't. Dirty work there, I bet."

SPY REPORT
I can't believe the violence in XOCHITHLAN! I still haven't told Mom I'm
writing Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... MVP award for TIMOR
UNRED? THE MIDDLE WAY's proud of him after beating IPSWICH and getting 19 points.
Talk about yer major upsets! IPSWICH's match with TIMOR UNRED cost him a loss of 11
points! This Duelmaster is like something else! D'URVILLE stopped DEELA ELLIS dead
in hers tracks! Who was the wiseguy that said XOCHITHLAN's Duelmaster was paying for
drinks at The Dripping Blade? Don't look at me!
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All XOCHITHLAN ever talks about is fighting!
Me, I'm more laid back. What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out
of a job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I gotta leave. XOCHITHLAN is like such a dump, and you guys
smell too much! Its been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

PERSONAL ADS
D'Urville -- I am stunned, I say, totally stunned, to have been matched against you
and to have lost. How can this possibly have come about? What is the secret inner
meaning of it all? -- Deela Ellis
Collingwood -- There's a Calling Wood out east of town, any relation of yours? You
know, that grove where the aqueduct makes the bend for no obvious reason? That's the
Calling Wood. Named for some birds, I think. -- Xyokor Yahl
If the Rirorni Horseman wants to bring his horse into the arena, and the Commission
allows this, why do *I* have to clean up after him? It wasn't MY horse. -- Saml Tyne
P.S. But it damned near broke my toe, stepping on me.
Ipswich -- I heard about you, and the Ipswich Vial and all. Tricky, how'd you get it
into the arena? Really threw me for a loop. -- Ohtar Paes
Anonymous Commenter -- Name yourself so we can have a conversation! And no, I didn't
want to do a flagstone, they leave me feeling all flat. -- Deela Ellis
Do you have anything interesting to talk about? -- Shadrak Tev, Arena Manager
and General Handiman
