"But I CAN'T be a golem!"
Saml Tyne, wandering into the arena recruiting and registry office, raised an
eyebrow. There was a lot of passion in that statement for it to be coming from a
golem.
The man, or more likely elf, for so he could be called going by appearances, was
leaning over the counter, nose to nose with the arena official in charge. Shadrak
Tev, that would be, the General Manager and Handyman for the Xochithlan arena; he did
everything that didn't actually require him to hold a sword. "I can't be a golem!"
the man repeated. "My mother would have mentioned something like that! She'd have
noticed--"
Shadrak ruffled the wad of papers in front of him, selecting one and placing it
on top. "According to the Medical Examiner, you ARE a golem," he said. "This isn't
something he'd make a mistake about."
"But--"
"It may have been a post-natal conversion," the official went on. "We see a
fair amount of that in the arenas. Some promising youngster is, ah, noticed by a,
um, genetic engineer who makes a few changes, you could say enhancements, before
adulthood brings rigidity to the, well, to the physisical development, and then
erases the subject's memory. Nothing shows until the arena's Medical Examiner gets
to work." He shrugged. "It isn't anything to be ashamed of. Some of the most
successful gladiators have been converted--"
"But I don't WANT to--"
"Sorry, the condition is not reversible. Now if you will just sign here, here,
here, here, and here...." He held out the quill.
The young person took the quill but hesitated. "What are these papers?"
"Your registration, assignment to a team, and, um, other details. Nothing you
need to be concerned about. Just... details. And then you can go and meet your new
teammates of the Middle Way."
Saml closed his eyes and prayed for patience. Just what they needed, a new
teammate with identity issues. Interesting times ahead and no mistake!

Welcome XOCHITHLAN. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights
have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... What's with ASQUITH?
He actually beat THE MIDDLE WAY's TIMOR UNRED, and walked away with 22 more points
from the fight. Major screwup at KIWI CONNECTION. WHAKAPAPA lost 23 points to ELITE
ASSASSIN. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe WHAKAPAPA will provide more easy
wins... DEELA ELLIS was reminded on the sands why D'URVILLE is Duelmaster. Wouldn't
it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into
the uses of convicted prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports.
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Is it my imagination, or are fighters getting younger every
day? To die so young, so gloriously!
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? All
work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
