Her mentors had told Quita--more than once, over and over again--that the winter
solstice was a time for thinking serious thoughts. They had been firm about that,
less firm about what constituted a serious thought. But she did try, every year.
This year, she was thinking about Time. And the differences in the way humans
and elves thought about time. Although given her involvement with the arena, and her
human teammates, Quita felt less and less like an elf these days. Maybe thought less
like an elf, even.
She was pretty sure that elves, generally, did not see Time as an enemy, or a
trap. Elves were not immortal, as some humans believed, nothing was truly immortal,
not even the mountains. But when your life expectancy is measured in centuries
rather than decades, when there is TIME to pursue many interests to the point of
competency instead of just one-- Well, she could understand the human frustrations
better now. Better than her clan Elders could, certainly. She looked at the scroll
in her hand and sighed, then put it on the fire. Humans could understand,
intellectually, the need for certain long-term projects, they were as intelligent as
elves, most of them. But they didn't feel it in their blood.
Two hundred years to rebuild the Shagornan Forest, if it could be done at all?
Probably an accurate estimate, and Quita knew that there would be humans who would
help. But not with the same urgency as elves who could expect to be around for the
whole project. She shook her head and sighed again. The Elders didn't deal with
humans, and they wouldn't understand that.
     Oh, well....
     Time.
The time that mattered was now. She opened the door and stepped out into the
crisp coldness of the winter morning. Squinted at the sunlight reflecting of
untrodden snow--which was unusual but not unknown in Xochithlan. More common than it
used to be, in fact. Maybe the climate was changing... global cooling? She could
ask one of the Elders who studied weather patterns, perhaps. Tomorrow, she could
ask. Today, she was just going to enjoy the day. The cold, the bright, the very
clean.
     The Now.
     It was enough.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

The Rirorni Assassin was carried to the Infirmary, where he recovered. That
seems to me just... wrong. Why are we preserving this... person? Either he should
be punished for his bad career choice, which I gather his standby duties are, or he
should go free--and surely, this many years after the end of the Rirorni War, he has
paid in full? Provided he doesn't go back to serving as an assassin, of course. But
there must be something constructive he could do.

                                   Quita Rosala

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of XOCHITHLAN! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team PROPHETIC OMENS was
unseated this week as THE MIDDLE WAY moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot
with a 3-2-0 record for the round. UDARN VOYL caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested RIRORNI HORSEMAN and was awarded 21
points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, TERROR-DACTYL put
down MISTY FORM, causing her to lose 9 points of recognition in the process. Our
last turn's Duelmaster has lost, folks, lost to ELITE ASSASSIN, and QUITA ROSALA has
made the way for a new Duelmaster! With QUITA ROSALA clearing the throne, THE MIDDLE
WAY of TIMOR UNRED takes a proud seat as XOCHITHLAN's new Duelmaster, by virtue of
recognition points. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has
gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps?
Many and various are the arts of battle. In XOCHITHLAN "art" is a word that has
long since passed from the language!
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing
is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in XOCHITHLAN. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I
keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari
await me! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a
maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Udarn Voyl -- Ah... But if we all had good beer, everyone would claim to have

Where did I go wrong? Not inorganic enough for a date with the beloved computer. I
was chewed up and spit out. Sorry for all my beloved followers and admirers for my
untimely missing person imitation last time. May you all enjoy my next performance
as recompense. -- Ripple Causer
