                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, warriors of XOCHITHLAN! Once again I've been called out of
retirement for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Up 'n down. Up 'n down.
Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, FEVER PITCH's
5th moved them up to 2-2-0 place. It seems so recently people were saying STEEL
WOLVES 2 was washed up, finished. But 4-1-1 moved them up 1. I guess they're washed
no more... What's with MATAI? She actually beat FEVER PITCH's PORK RIND, and walked
away with 19 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at STEEL WOLVES 2 while
they watched SYLAH VENTRESS clobber HABBIBOULIN. It lost 10 points and got bruised
from objects thrown from the stands. Try as he might, RIRORNI OFFICER wasn't good
enough at persuading MASSEY to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... Wouldn't it
be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the
uses of convicted prisoners.
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. I hate going to the effort
of writing about the kind of fights that MORGANA BLACK gets in. She fights people
like MAHOVLICH, 8 points below. I thought MORGANA BLACK showed great skill and
promise when she bested MAHOVLICH. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? So FEVER PITCH sent FLESH GORDON to the Dark Arena. Big deal.
Plenty more fighters where FLESH GORDON came from. Dime a dozen... Now,
Spyreporters... How long have I been here? I got people to see, places to go...
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. All work
and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and
good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen

Beltina chin -- Personally, I don't think it was 'mismatched' as the reports say.
Though I tried my best (but did I think I'd win? Not really). -- Desslock Cain

Hotham -- I'll send you a coupon for some anger management sessions. Thank me later.
-- Morgana Black

Mahovlich -- Don't think this is going to e a regular thing. -- Sylah Ventress

Habbiboulin -- You sealed my fate. Goodbye, cruel world! -- Jalobhaus Xho

All -- Wow, brutal 1-4 turn. I even lost to the CLEARLY inferior Roughriders squad.
*he he* I used to have a bit of patience with fighters, but Xho's days are over. In
case anyone was wondering, he's a st with the following stats: 17-7-16-15-13-3-13.
the 3 speed probably was his downfall. Oh well. I can't recall his starting roll-
up, but I do rememer maxing out his wt and wl; hindsight probably better to have
raised sp a bit. -- Lobo, mgr SW2

Hokowhitu -- That was quite a battle! My manager is quite proud of me. We'll meet
again, but I still need to recover first. -- Selaane

Sylah Ventress -- I think you may have challenged the wrong opponent. Selaane is
insulted; I'm confused. We can't imagine how you feel. How's your head? -- Mahovlih

Jalabhaus Xho -- Well, that was kind of embarrasing for both of us. But hey, a
victory is still a victory! -- Habbiboulin

Wovern Yansy -- Thanks for the advice. I made some adjustments, tried a new weapon.
It seems to have worked last time. Mind you, I was only fighting Jalabhaus Xho. --
Habbiboulin

Salome Torene -- Guess I left my guard down at the wrong time. One devastating blow
to my abdomen while I'm trying to protect my left leg. Dang! -- Svoboda

Brunei -- Ouch! What was that? Where did you come from? More to the point, why
pick on me? -- Koivu

Ah... personals to answer! Conversation! This is great.

Jalabhaus Xho -- Never trust logic. Any dumb cluck can argue "logically," but most
of 'em don't know beans. Or rice, either. -- Wovern Yansy

Lobo -- Probably others will answer, too, but just in case they don't:

Losing or burning skills: There are six types of skills, and a warrior is able to
learn (eventually) twenty skills in each type on top of whatever his base skills are.
The normal way to do this is by training skills. When you have trained and gained
all twenty skills in some type, you are "maxed" in that type and cannot learn more of
that type of skill by training skill. However, it is also possible to learn skills
by training stats, and these skills are part of the twenty mentioned above.
Except... if you max the relevant skill by training skills FIRST and THEN train
stats, you get MORE skills than the originally expected twenty. Managers are greedy
for these extra skills, which may make a difference in high-end play, and they advise
other managers not to train stats early and risk "burning" those skills.

It's my opinion that this advice is too narrow. In Basic play, and most gladiators,
even if they graduate, do not go beyond Basic, you are really unlikely to max the
skills, and yet, those extra skills derived from trained stats would stand you in
good stead. Train the stat, stay alive, win fights, and retire upon graduation.

What it comes down to is deciding where you generally want to play: in Basic, in
"lower Advanced" (dm 100, 101, and the regionals), high-end (Primus), or tourneys.
Different styles and long-term management strategies are needed for each level of
play. Different choices of style: aimed blows for high-end, for instance, where in
Basic, aimed blows are well known for their tendency to die. Bashers for Basic,
because they start strong and then do poorly at the high end. Train stats and burn
skills for Basic, don't if you're aiming for the high end. That kind of thing. My
own preference is for the Basic arenas, though I do also run some warriors in the
lower Advanced arenas (someone's got to write the personals).

A TV is a "tourney victor," someone who went for at least eight wins (and survived)
in a recent tourney. This gets them a TV challenge, which lasts six months and takes
priority over everything but a bloodfeud challenge. Besides having the TV challenge,
you can be certain that this gladiator has at least eight "hidden" tourney fights,
fights that don't show in his regular win/loss record. He will probably have learned
some skills at the tourney, maybe trained a stat or two. This is considered to give
him a bit of an edge, and no doubt it does. Often (not always) gladiators with TVs
are *primarily* tourney warriors and will tend to pop in and out of the regular
arenas on a schedule that suits their tourney-preparation needs. This can be
annoying, but so can lots of other things in life, and I'd rather have tourney
warriors popping in an out of a regular arena than have the arena close. -- Jorja

Desslock Cain -- Ah, that "has exhausted his strength" business half way through?
You might want to consider a strategy that allows you to slow down if the fight
doesn't end after the first couple of minutes. Conserve your energy, then come back
strong when (if you're lucky) your opponent has gotten tired. -- Bettina Chim

Hobson -- Hey! Believe it. -- Ulrik Venn, hoping his luck has changed

You ever wonder what blooper the Shaman's Assistant committed to end up in the arena?
-- Horvanth Irnde

Svoboda -- You might want to learn to smooth down those rough edges. Sometimes a
little courtesy works better. -- Salome Torene

Dumb Rirorni Chieftan. -- Wovern Yansy
