Skaithvarn:

"Bound to be trouble there," Hallie O'Dene said almost cheerfully. She guided
her horse toward the half-hidden tower. "It's too pat to be anything but a trap."
"You've got that right, doll," Raoul agreed. "But it just might be a trap for
sheep. Let's see how it handles some wolves."
"It might be a perfectly innocent tower," Jeri Northwind protested.
"It MIGHT, doll, but I don't think so. It--"
"If it was a 'perfectly innocent' building, whether ruined or whole, I'd have
heard of it," Hallie said. "It's my job to hear of such things. Besides, this isn't
the first time I've been down this road, and I don't recall seeing that tower before.
Maybe--MAYBE I missed it because I didn't need it, but...."
"But it's the kind of thing you would be looking for anyway," Raoul said.
Thunder crashed suddenly. He squinted at the trees.
If there was going to be lightning, the trees might be risky shelter at best.
Of course, riding down a road with nothing nearby as tall as three gladiators on
their horses wouldn't be safe, either. The horses seemed to have their own ideas and
ran in under the trees at the edge of the road, not quite fast enough to avoid the
deluge that suddenly burst from the clouds.
Even the trees didn't provide much shelter from that driving downpour. Raoul
took off his hat and tried to shake the water from it, then shrugged and put it back
on. "Not much choice--risk the tower or drown where we sit." He urged his horse
forward. The light wasn't good now that the rain had closed over them, but he
thought he could see a door of planks weathered to almost the same gray as the
stones.
As they approached, the door moved. Opened into the black interior of the
tower.
"Probably haunted," Hallie muttered. "If we're lucky. If not...well, all the
vampires may not be in Leemith. And there are robbers, and--"
"Oh, stop!" Jeri protested. "At least not robbers--they couldn't have BUILT the
tower since you were here last, could they?"
     "If they had a wizard--"
A figure appeared in the doorway. Between the rain and the shadow of the trees
now, it was little more than a pale, moving shape until they got close. Too close
now to flee, if they had to and he was any kind of wizard.
An old man, Raoul saw, but not bent or shriveled with his age. Tall, lean as a
bone, with a narrow, hawk's face, hair more gray than red, wearing a simple robe of
natural-colored wool. He made a gesture that was half an offer of shelter, half a
command that they enter.
"Come out of the rain," he said. His voice was deep and cold, and he spoke
Fratsfan with a slight accent like none that Raoul had ever heard before. He stepped
toward the doorway ahead of them. "I have a great aversion to becoming wet."
After a brief hesitation, Raoul dismounted and moved forward, leading his horse.
"We didn't expect to find a shelter along this stretch of the coast," he said,
shaking what rain he could from his clothes before entering. The room within was
circular and large, filling the whole base of the tower. A fire burned on a hearth
to one side. It looked like the part near the door had been used to stable horses
before, and recently.
"This tower has been here a long time," the man said. He turned back at the
fireplace and watched the women enter behind Raoul. "But it has not always been...
visible."
     "You're a wizard," Hallie said.
It wasn't a question, but the man bowed his head slightly. "Perhaps the
greatest. I am Kaldrehn of Krael."
One of the women drew a breath in shock; Raoul didn't look back to see which
one. He didn't want to turn his back on this man. "It figures that a great wizard
wouldn't have been caught in the destruction of Krael," he agreed. "But I'm
surprised I haven't heard of you before. You don't have the look of a recluse."
Kaldrehn laughed. "And so I am not." His gaze shifted from Raoul to look
past--at the women, probably. "Not at all a recluse. Nor a man to endure the tedium
of the dark centuries between the fall of Krael and the present, if it could be
avoided. A man with skill enough can move behind time from one era to another, as he
wills." His smile was not reassuring. "As I willed."

                                      SPY REPORT

Much has changed in ZENSU since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts
to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Biff! Pow! ZENSU watched with
glee as WIMPS MOST FOWL got knocked off top spot by TACO GODS! Ya gotta be quick on
yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! BATTLE
SCHOOL is now ranked 7th with a 3-2-1 turn. It seems so recently people were saying
BEYOND THE PALE was washed up, finished. But 4-1-0 moved them up 2. I guess they're
washed no more... What's with MINISTRY? He actually beat WIMPS MOST FOWL's TURKEY
LURKEY, and walked away with 15 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at
BEYOND THE PALE while they watched TERIS clobber SUSAN STO HELIT. She lost 11 points
and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. LEADFOOT was reminded on the
sands why CMOT DIBBLER is Duelmaster. I suppose you want to hear some rumors and
dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. ZENSU thinks THE DISC and
their 27-18-2 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up... In my day, no
team with a 26-14-2 would scare me off! What's the problem, TACO GODS? How well I
know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior, ARNIE EL SHEW! Don't make
idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. Keep challenging up 27 points, DANZIG,
and I won't have to write about you much longer. JOPHAN always accepts those kind of
challenges... DANZIG found one way to advance: challenging JOPHAN and losing, but
getting 2 points. No brain, no pain.
Warriors of ZENSU unite. You have only your games to lose! We all knew it had
to happen sooner or later. A warrior can't stick around with a 4-5-0, and CHUNKY
MONKEY easily took care of PANDORA'S DIAPHRAGM. CRAZY LOON larned its lesson (FRY
GUY taught it well), and we right likely won't be seein' 'im fight any TACO GODS
members with the same gusto. Here's some advice: study your opponent, master many
skills, fight dirty.
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. The end
of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! Time for my
medication, so I'll leave now. Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

Ghost of Woman's Wrath -- I feel terrible. I may be crazy but I don't go around
killing the Sentinel's fighters. I assure you I was running with a moderate KD. My
guess would be that you were given a defective small shield by someone. -- Crazy Loon

Sentinel -- Did I read that Woman's Wrath down challenged Polly? Well, I am sure you
have heard of just deserts. -- Wimpy

Polly -- You are avenged. -- Wimpy

Danzig -- Speaking of down challenges, I am sure your manager made an error when he
had you challenge down a couple of points and a couple of FE. There must be someone
up a bit that a scum like you can find to fight. -- Scooter

Arnie El Shew -- Shouldn't you be thinking about retirement? -- Turkey Lurkey

Odysseus -- Not a very good match up for you. I expect we will be seeing you in the
Dark Arena very soon. -- Ducky Lucky

Menelaos -- Now that was nicely done. You took me apart just like you knew what you
were doing. I am smarter now than I was, but I am still... -- Old Biddy

Shewish Giant? What you mean I not sposed to win? -- Dud

Fry Guy -- Hmmph. Most unsatisfying. -- Susan

Aias -- Man, you must really stink...cuz I'm bad! -- Polly

Idomeneus -- Errr, hope you're okay. -- Ponder

Queensrhyche -- (sigh) The same old story.... -- Jophan, feeling a seasonal let-down
and not having much to say

Leadfoot -- My toes my never recover. -- Teris
P.S. Remind me not to dance with you.

Turkey Lurkey -- You'd better WATCH OUT. This is the season when turkeys get what's
coming to them. -- Arnie El Shew
P.S. Cornbread stuffing....

Braised Buffalo -- Curse you! May the fire over which you are being braised leap up
and burn you to charcoal briquettes. You are anti-Elf. -- Ghost of Tiger Elf

Ghost of Warrant -- Well, that action on my part was unwarranted. For what good
it'll do, you have my sincere regrets. -- Sianna

Cmot Dibbler -- How about a Braised Buffalo sausage? I hear it's the coming thing.
-- Teris

8 December 2003
Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36
