                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

        + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Mountains of Night #1 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

It was a night with no moon, and no stars. Not the kind of night that welcomed
a returning traveler. Huw ap Huw, once a gladiator of Murska, stopped where his path
crested the last ridge and looked down on the valley that held the Welgin Tei and
Murska. A few lights showed in the town, looking as far away as the stars, and a
lace of white foam shimmered on the river.
Not enough light to descend the hillside in safety. Huw touched the unlit
lantern he carried, then took his hand away. Better to wait for dawn, or even to
attempt the path in the dark than to announce his coming with a light. His memory
suggested a cluster of rocks that nearly formed a cave somewhere off to his left. It
would do to pass the rest of the night in. If it wasn't already occupied. He
shifted his grip on his staff and tapped the ground in that direction like a blind
man, feeling for the edge of the cliff, the rocks, the cave, anything that might be
there.
"You're too far to your right."
He froze, his other hand going to his sword.
"Relax, if I wanted you dead, it would already have happened."
"True enough, I s'pose," Huw admitted. "What are you, a dwarf, or an elf, to
see in the dark?"
     "Does it matter?"
     "It might."
There was a brief silence. "Elf. Andorian, though I haven't been back there in
years. My name's Tankesh. You?"
"Huw. From here originally, well, from the woods just north of here." He
advanced cautiously, feeling his way with the staff, and met a strong hand that
guided him into the shelter of the rocks.
"This is not a safe place to be at night," Tankesh said.
Huw snorted. "You're here. Is it safer for you?"
A faint laugh. "Not hardly. The Black Kaliv's demons are pursuing me."
"Something's chasing me, too," Huw admitted. "Damned if I know what it is.
Coming from the east, though, not out of the north." The Black Kaliv, he knew, was
the name by which the ruler of Kurukar was now known, for his embracing of the
darkest kinds of magic. "Maybe it'll take on the Black One's demons, and they'll
kill each other."
     "Dream on."
"I can hope!" Huw settled to the ground, shifting his scabbarded sword so that
it would be easy to reach and letting his shoulder satchel slip down. "I've got
bread and cheese, and some decent wine, if you're hungry."
"Traveling in style! I'll take you up on that, and thanks! I ran out of
supplies three days ago, and I haven't dared stop at any village or farm with the
demons behind me."
Huw handed over a slab of dark bread and a wedge of cheese, then offered the
wine flask. "What did you do to stir up the Black One?"
"Tried to rescue a girl he planned on sacrificing." The elf's voice darkened.
"I couldn't save her life," he said very quietly, "but at least her soul wasn't eaten
by the demons. Who are now hungry for mine."
Huw nodded, not sure if the elf could see that, but didn't answer. What could
he say? Being a hero was a hard job, and sometimes you lost. And if you could shrug
off such a defeat and the death of an innocent, you were no hero. "I picked up
trouble just this side of Malcorn, when I came on a dead traveler and buried him. I
thought it was bandits, but they wouldn't follow this far, especially after I left
the road. I know these woods. That's got to be some kind of special tracker to
still be on my trail." He was silent for a moment, then said, "I'm nothing special,
but I'm too stupid to back down. If I can help you, I will."
"Too stupid to back down," Tankesh repeated. He laughed. "I wonder how many
'heroes' that describes. A fair offer, and I'll take you up on it. And if I can
help you, I will."
Huw stuck out his hand, Tankesh met it, and they shook on a partnership.

        + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Mountains of Night #2 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Raoul, one of Gerfel's Friends from Aruak City, looked around the one room cabin
and sighed. "It isn't much, doll, but it'll have to do."
"It's fine," Crystal Fireblade said. "Shelter, and a chance to rest, what more
can we ask?" She lowered her pack to the floor, which was of rough planks, and
stretched. "Any idea where we are?"
"Somewhere between Zensu and Murska is the best I can do." He moved to the
fireplace, noting the full woodbox with approval, and began to lay a fire. "I wish I
knew what we've got following us, though."
     "Demons."
"Yeah, but did you get the impression back in Fratsfa that Khaldren's converts
used demons? They were regular hired bravos that we fought."
"True, but we killed them. Maybe the next step is demons." The Lady Knight
looked at the bread and cheese in her hands, then passed it to Raoul to toast. "What
else could it mean? You think there's some OTHER power-mad magician at work, too?"
"There are rumors about the kaliv of Kurukar."
"I've heard them, but surely his arm isn't this long? And anyway, Andoria has
its protections--"
Raoul shrugged, looking around uneasily. "The protections, such as they are,
focus on the person of the king, and who's seen him lately?"
"He spends a lot of time on the Isle of the Eye...."
"Which doesn't do Andoria much good. Sometimes I wonder if people are right
about him being under the Greywand's thumb."
Crystal Fireblade stood, squaring her shoulders, and looked down at her
companion sternly. "That's fool talk, and practically treasonous."
"And they say Fratsfa has its own protections," Raoul went on as though she
hadn't spoken. "But those only work against...." He shrugged. "If the majority of
the magicians of Fratsfa choose to ignore a danger, then the protections do, too.
And if Khaldren has suborned them--"
"That would still leave the protections in place against Kurukar," Crystal said,
sitting down again.
Raoul shrugged again. "Well, if we can catch one of the demons alive, we can
ask who sent him."

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly ZENSU games. There were bitter words at EXOTIC
TASTES' guildhouse after a 0-0-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 6th.
Dark Arena anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner!
Witness how this week BLOOD ANGELS went 3-0-0 to move up 4 in the rankings. DRIZZT
caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested THE
USEROUS MERCHANT and was awarded 19 points in recognition. In one of the week's more
notable duels, SANGUINE put down CRAZY TRAIN, causing him to lose 9 points of
recognition in the process. Although JENIPHER made a valiant effort, it did not
suffice to topple the reign of victorious CASSIUS. Informants "close" to the city
champion have told me that he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor.
Watch out!
Many and various are the arts of battle. In ZENSU "art" is a word that has long
since passed from the language! ZENSU, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names
of thy guilds is BATTLE SCHOOL, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly
duels. Apparently the stalwarts of BLOOD ANGELS are catching the bulk of jests down
at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Loose talk at the
arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are
after BLOOD BATH. Watch your back! As a gladiator gets older, the icy grip of fear
lays hold of his heart. True, VIRULENT? Who could miss your "brave" challenge of
BLOOD BATH? Few would not have guessed the outcome of the bout as BLOOD BATH was
defeated by VIRULENT. Is this what passes for courage in ZENSU?
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena
there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Sadly warriors, now longer can I keep thy
company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till we meet
again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a
lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes
