It was true that he resented the demands of Lord Korneth, any magician worth his grimoire would resent them. Any magician above the skill required to pull a rabbit out of a hat would have been as resentful and would have had as much trouble as he had trying to make that pathetic golem believable as the king of the Andorian League. He wondered again if Korneth was deliberately setting him up to fail. It would be just like that untrustworthy schemer! But he, Herlas of Zensu, had been, well, not to put too fine a point on it, rightfully called a "renegade mage" for years, more years than he cared to count. Which meant that the declaration he was about to make went against a lifetime of custom. It wasn't easy. He sighed. "Yes," he said, "I will join you in wholly supporting the 'good of the Andorian League' by whatever means necessary. And pray I don't die in the doing, because my ancestors would disown me and turn me out of the family tomb." "Are you always this gloomy?" Crystal asked. "Gods, woman! This isn't gloom, it's a reasonable appreciation of the commitment, the risks, and the entanglements I'm undertaking." "Not all the consequences will be bad," she said. "For you, perhaps. I'm sure life is much simpler for a warrior. But for a magician--" She snorted. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" He paused in his pacing and drew himself up to his full height. Took a deep breath, held it for a moment, then blew it out. "I do like a little drama from time to time," he admitted. "There's nothing wrong with that, is there?" "So long as it doesn't get in the way of doing the job." "Ah. Yes. The job.... Let's be specific here. What, exactly, do you see as my part in this 'job'?" She looked away, silent for the space of three breaths. Then she sighed. "I'm almost certain that the king is gone... or dead. As certain as I can be without seeing his body. But if there's any way you could make sure we're right in that-- scrying or something? Magic mirrors?" "Well, maybe. Not the Isle of the Eye, though, that's completely shielded." "You can make sure he isn't hidden in the palace, though, right? Or anywhere around, any estate or--" "Yes, I could check those," Herlas said after a moment's thought. "I could do that now. But it would be best if you left before I started." "Why?" Damn the woman, she was too suspicious. Well, perhaps not without cause, but still. "Because it's dangerous--" He held up his hand to stop her protest. "I'm sure you aren't afraid of danger, but why take an unnecessary chance? Using magic is like lighting a fire on a dark night, suddenly the magician is visible to any other mage around. And vulnerable, because it isn't possible to project any kind of spell through a shield, so I will be making an unprotected target of myself... and anyone near me. Better to avoid that, don't you think?" "That assumes there's another magician around who cares what you do," she pointed out. "I haven't heard of one, or seen any sign of one." "Nor have I, but there must be some other magician. Some of the things that have happened--" He shrugged. "I have no proof, I suppose, but I can feel the presence of another magician, I can taste his interest in this business." She frowned, still suspicious, but finally nodded. "Okay. I'll leave you to it, then, and we'll meet to compare notes--there are some lines I can pursue-- tomorrow evening?" "Fine. Ah... yes, that would be fine." They were going to need a plausible reason to be meeting often, because as suspicious as the lady knight was, Korneth was more suspicious. Korneth didn't trust anyone. There was one obvious reason for a man and a woman to get together in the evenings, but Herlas had a feeling that Lady Crystal Fireblade wasn't going to go for that one. Well, not tonight's problem. He shut the door behind her and turned to his tools. ***** *** ***** *** ***** Crystal Fireblade walked slowly across the grounds of the White Palace. The night was cold with an edge of frost, but her cloak was warm enough, and she had a lot to think about. She wished for her manager or some of her teammates. That it should come to trusting that renegade magician Herlas with the safety of the Andorian League! He might as well have "untrustworthy" tatooed across his forehead. True, he *said* he had changed sides and would work for the good of Andoria, but can a man who will change sides once be trusted? But there was no one else at hand. Perhaps she should go back to Aruak City, there must be somebody left she'd know-- The wind whirled fallen leaves in front of her, startling her out of her concentration. Just as well, her thoughts weren't going anywhere but around in circles. Odd that the wind should come up so suddenly, though. She glanced around, then frowned. She had spent a lot of time in the palace when the true king had been in residence, but this was a part of the gardens she didn't recognize. Of course it was night, with very little moonlight, but still-- Half a dozen men, just darker shapes in the darkness, burst out of cover. Crystal flipped her cloak back to clear her sword for action even as she looked for escape routes. She was good, very good, but the odds here were not in her favor, and she'd grown past the stage where retreat was equated with cowardice. The wind picked up again, moaning in the trees and covering any sounds her attackers might be making. Blew more clouds across the moon and stars. Her mouth set in a grim line as the garden vanished into total darkness. At least she didn't have any friends nearby to worry about. Anyone other than herself moving here was an enemy. She drew her sword, dropping into a fighting crouch. Breathed the night air, waiting. Wet earth and the sour tang of fallen leaves and something else, warm and animal, rank and fetid. Like the lion cage in a menagerie. Aruaki? But they didn't smell like big cats when in human form, and these had been man-shaped when they launched their attack. No time to think about that now, or think at all. She couldn't hear them move, but felt the displaced air as one or more came toward her. She pivoted, sword moving without thought. Felt the jolt as it bit into flesh, sliced through, jammed against bone. Backed up, pulling and twisting to free the blade. Slammed an elbow into a half-guessed presence to the side. The wind whistled, whirling up leaves and dust to sting her eyes, not that her eyes were doing her any good right now, but-- The sword came free and she turned, slashing across the night. More strikes, she could smell fresh blood, but how many she'd hurt and how badly... she couldn't tell. The wind seized her cloak, flapping it forward to impede her arms. She remembered someone saying to her once that bad luck killed as many warriors as enemies did, while she tore at the clasp to get rid of the cloak. Couldn't feel what she was doing with her fingers numbed by cold. Warmth coming up behind her, she turned, slashing the cloak impatiently, stumbled. A weight across her shoulders. Pain somewhere behind the wall of her fighting concentration. Blood running hot down her arm. Hot bodies crowding too closely for her to use her sword skills. Someone behind her, fingers closing around her throat. She slammed her head backward into something hard. A yowl of beastial outrage. The grip on her neck tightening. No air. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Greetings Zensu, I sit here once again on the throne. Well, let me start off by saying congrats to ol' Chucky boy on his invite. If everything goes well I will be off to represent Zensu and the Andorian League in the advanced games in a couple of turns. Then maybe Tiny can have her chance on the throne. So for now I will float around a little longer. Norme The Gnome SPY REPORT Much has changed in ZENSU since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Woof! MEDAL OF HONOR G1 were a bunch of dogs after GUARDIANS II got through with 'em! 2nd ain't so sweet as 1st! What's with DAY TURNER? He actually beat BEYOND THE PALE's CHUCK ELVIS, and walked away with 24 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at MEDAL OF HONOR G1 while they watched GRUNT 4 clobber CALHOUN DEANE. He lost 19 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. Try as he might, GRUNT 3 wasn't good enough at persuading NORM THE GNOME to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners. Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... Warriors of ZENSU unite. You have only your games to lose! BECKER MAINZ of BEYOND THE PALE didn't know when to quit. When you've got a 4-8-0, that's a good sign. Now he's dead. Is it my imagination, or are fighters getting younger every day? To die so young, so gloriously! Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf. Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Listen, there are guys with more than fifty fights that haven't been cleared out of some arenas, and I had stuff still to DO here! I was thinking maybe I could teach Norm to play bass. -- Chuck Elvis, disgusted Guardians II -- We love you guys, too. Teaching is what we do, glad you appreciate it. -- Beyond the Pale 8 October 2008 Hail Alastarians! Allow me to introduce myself. I am Vanek, manager of the Warmasters in the No- Tourney arena of Shadowspire. I come to you with a public service announcement. Some of you may already be aware of Shadowspire and some of you may not realize what exactly you're missing. This isn't your average arena. This is Shadowspire, a large and very active arena where role-playing is encouraged; many managers are active both the personal ads and the D2 forums online, and excitement reigns with many grudge matches from turn to turn. If you haven't checked arena 81 out, I urge you to do so. After returning to the game almost 2 years ago, after a 15+ year hiatus, I was looking to try and recapture the magic of the game I remembered from my youth. After finding my first two arenas lacking, I almost quit the game again. That was until I found the newly opening Shadowspire. It was here that I found the magic and excitement that I remembered. I truly love this arena and am sure you will too if given a chance. Rookie or experienced veteran, it matters not. Both have come together here to successfully make an arena with plenty of competition to challenge the vets, yet with the no tourney format, friendly enough for the novices to get their feet wet and learn (or relearn) the game. When I say that even novices can find success here, I speak from personal experience. I still consider myself a "newbie" to the game but have found plenty of success with my first two Duelmaster titles and two ADM graduates to date. I encourage you all to check out the D2 forums at www.reality.com/duel2/ and look over both the Shadowspire newsletter and DM-81 forum section at the bottom of the page. The forum banter and personal ads help to clearly show that the "old school" feel for the game is still alive and well here in Shadowspire. Also, if you're a former Shadowspire manager who is currently away, I encourage you to return and help continue to make this one of the most entertaining arenas in the game today! I hope to see many new faces in the near future and am excited to see the return of some of the old faces whom have been away! Sincerely, Vanek 8 October 2008 After 17 long years they are finally cutting the Cowboy loose. Red & stinging, my hand is now sufficiently slapped. The state of Texas' boot print is stamped across my ***... Uncle Damnit! I am only 34 (think about it...) so plenty of time to reinvent myself...prospects are great. After wading through the culture shock I hope to be amongst you soon, dishing out paper "w"itch slaps and taking my share of them from you. See you @ the Winter face '09? Only time will tell. Good luck. -- CFH/Rat Salad, 5 Below Zero and an assortment of other underachieving thugs. P.S.
