Iaye:
Raoul, once known in the arena at Aruak City as In Gerfel We Trust, looked
around the waterfront and frowned. Even though he and his companions, Jeri
Northwind, a gladiator from Zorpunt, and Berdan, a Fratsfan ex-assassin, had just
come from the devastated town of Point, he had not expected to find Iaye in such a
mess.
"What happened here?" Jeri asked a lounger.
The local man, who could have used a bath, shrugged and spat. "The Trier rose
up and smashed the waterfront," he said. He looked at the woman calculatingly, as
though trying to guess how much money she might spend on hearing his tale. "Or
ghosts did it, if you can believe that."
"Ghosts out of Krael," Raoul said, nodding. "They hit Point, too."
"That's what folks say," the man agreed, scowling. "I guess you heard the story
already, huh? When I saw 'em coming, them ghosts, I didn't stay to ask their names.
A mean bunch. But things are pretty much okay on up the hill. Harbor House can
still give you a bed and a half-way decent feed."
Raoul looked at the man thoughtfully, glanced at his companions, and saw that
they agreed with him--ask this loafer nothing, tell him nothing. Iaye had an arena,
he and Jeri both had contacts there. That was where they'd ask their questions and
look for help.
Goff, the manager of Red Dog Gang in Iaye, shrugged. "They say it was ghosts,
but who knows? Does it matter?"
"Not to us," Raoul agreed. "Asking was just curiosity. We've got other
business. We're chasing a man known as Peranis, a Raltuman--"
"Him! He's a big-time troublemaker here, but he's got powerful friends. Nobody
can touch him."
"That's what we heard in Point, too," Jeri said, nodding. "Is he actually here
now?"
"No, I don't think so, I think he went to Skaithvarn. I keep track of him, as
much as I can, so as to keep out of his way. I had a run-in with him a few years
back," Goff explained, "and he's been out to do me bad turns ever since. That man
can REALLY hold a grudge. Uh...what do you want him for?"
Raoul glanced at Berdan, and the Fratsfan shrugged and sighed. "Peranis is a
member of the Assassins' Guild," Berdan said. "A high-ranking member. Though he's
been doing mostly administrative work lately, never doubt for a minute that he is a
dangerous man."
"Right, I won't doubt it," Goff said. "Why are you following him?"
"Because he's run off with the Guild's Black Book...which lists all the
assassins, all the Andorian spies abroad, all the people that the Guild is in a
position to coerce--"
"Blackmail, you mean," Raoul growled.
Berdan nodded. "But up until the King disbanded the Guild, it wasn't blackmail,
it was, ah, 'encouraging them to act in the national interest rather than in their
own'."
"With the 'national interest' being determined by the Guild, of course," Jeri
muttered.
"This Black Book, is it just names, or does it have details?" Goff asked. "I
mean, if somebody steals it from Peranis, can that somebody use it to blackmail?"
"Yes. We are pursuing Peranis to retrieve the book, which will be--"
"Which will be burned as soon as we get our hands on it," Raoul finished.
"But some of the information might be of great use to the King!" Berdan
protested.
Raoul shook his head. "No. That book is muck," he said flatly, "and you can't
pick up even a little of the muck without getting dirty. Let the King compile his
own files for 'encouraging' his citizens."
"And I hope he doesn't feel the need," Jeri added. "But you're right about the
Black Book. We've got to burn it."
"But first we have to catch Peranis and get the Book away from him," Raoul
finished. "You say he went to Skaithvarn. Where? There are several strong city-
states over there."
"I didn't ask him where he was going. My idea was to stay out of sight," Goff
pointed out. "But the word is he mostly goes to Istoreth."
"Isn't that the one that has a treaty with Osksi?" Raoul asked. "I didn't like
the idea of that book falling into S'varni hands, and I like it less if the Osksians
are going to have a chance at it." He took off his bowler and frowned down into it
as though he was looking into a crystal ball. "We need to get over there. You know
anyone with a boat?"
"Well...yeah, I've got a boat myself that'd make the crossing. It isn't that
far. But...." Goff ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. "But
it might be needed here--what if the ghosts come back?"
"Why should they come back?" Raoul asked.
"Nobody knows why they came in the first place, so how can we know whether
they'll come back?" The manager shook his head like a dog shaking off water. "Are
things going crazy everywhere?"
"Yes," Jeri answered, surprising the others. Defensively she added, "Well, they
are! Point was destroyed by the ghosts, too, and Seam now has a geyser in the middle
of town that can't be helping things much, and there are other stories going around.
Have you heard anything at all from Ti lately?"
"I know, doll," Raoul said quietly, "but we can't do more than one thing at a
time, and our job is to catch Peranis."

SPY REPORT
Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport.
I doubt KATI-TEI will ever be the same. And let's see, JEHU fought KIWI and gained
18 points and contributed to WANDERERS' 3-2-0. JACANA has lost to DIRK, falling 12
points, while helping make BIRDS a 1-4-0 turn. GWYN AP NUDD challenged for the
Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone BIRDS' warrior. And not without
some honor, GWYN AP NUDD now claims the title and throne of Duelmaster of KATI-TEI.
Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters
do dishes at The Welcome Wench until they win. Maybe?
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one. I also notice that the FLAGG'S FIVE
stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on KATI-TEI, what are you afraid
of? And guess who avoided FLAGG'S FIVE stable the most? Believe it or not, it was
BIRDS. Anyone surprised?
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? Is it really true that KATI-TEI has more dishwashers per capita that
fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Always good to rest in KATI-TEI, but never good to wear out my welcome.
Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in KATI-TEI again, farewell--
Alarond the Scribe

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
