Dal Shang:

From the top tier of the arena, you could see a long way out to sea, because the
arena was built on a cliff above the harbor. So was a lot of the rest of Dal Shang,
but except for the governor's palace, it mostly wasn't as high as the arena.
Lord Protector Wais, who had come home to Dal Shang in a vague effort to boost
that beleaguered arena, was sitting on the top tier brooding. The arena was
shrinking faster than a pool of water in the desert. Promising warriors who were
looking for a career in the arena were not looking in THIS arena. Fourteen active
warriors last time, and two of them had been retiring by way of a Dark Arena
appearance. His own team, even, had gone inactive! Something had to be done, but he
had no idea what. Even the fans had deserted Dal Shang arena.
With a sigh, he turned away from the empty arena to look out to sea. And so he
saw the waters of the lake heave as though they were boiling, and a new--or very
old--island rise like a black reef no more than five miles off shore. Five miles is
too far away to see the details, but there was something disturbingly regular about
the broken ridgeline of that island. Like buildings....

A note for the people of the Free Cities and Lirith Kai:

Some people say that if you get rid of magic, the world will be much simpler.
Some people say that the destabilization of the Arcanum will get rid of magic. Ha!
High Magic, the stuff that highly educated wizards do, falters as the Arcanum
weakens. But there are other kinds of magic. Older. Cruder. Less vulnerable.
There's Blood Magic. Spilling blood releases power. The more blood, the more power.
And a very powerful wizard of several centuries ago, Khaldren of Krael, who
decided that he didn't want to die when the city around him was dying, has come to
the present. He's made a spell to bring Krael back from ruins, and he's tied it to
Blood Magic.
But there's more blood being spilled around Alastari than he realized, and a lot
of Lost Cities that want to live again. If you have some old ruins near your house,
and there's an arena where people are bleeding and dying, you've got trouble coming.
This is now your story, too.

It's all a plot, and probably a dark one. Where is Daylight Savings time when
you need it?

Aruak City:

Conversation in the Bulldog Inn stopped as the ground shifted slightly
underfoot, then resumed. A little faster, a little more shrill. There had been a
lot of earth tremors lately, and in one way, people were getting used to them.
Nobody rushed outside in alarm. Nobody talked about moving to some other area.
There was a betting pool on when the next tremor would occur.
But in another way, they weren't getting used to them at all. Earthquakes in
Aruak City were WRONG. In Seam, okay, if they were mild and didn't happen very often
(although lately they had been frequent and devastating). You expected strange earth
movements in Seam, because of the hot springs. Hot springs meant things like that
might happen. But not HERE.
"It's because of Krael rising," explained Thermodynamics, a gladiator from Point
passing through the city. "The balances are disturbed. You see, Krael came from the
bottom of the Trier, which is very cold. Therefore, some place else has to become
very hot to balance it." He paused and frowned. "Or maybe some other place has to
sink, a down to balance the new up, so to speak."
Adeolar, listening to him, sighed with exasperation. "It isn't that," she
muttered. "Oh, maybe the bit about some other area sinking to balance the rising of
Krael--I've got people watching for that, all along the coast. But the 'hot and
cold' business--"
"Let him talk," Kennelworth said, gauging the mood of the crowd. "It's an
explanation people can accept, and they'll feel less alarmed by it. We don't want a
riot, and there's nothing they can do about things right now, so...?" He looked back
at the flame-haired manager. "There isn't anything, is there?"
Adie grimaced. "I don't know. I don't think stopping Khaldren in Zorpunt will
be enough to stop what's happening, now. The spell he started has taken on a life of
its own. I'm trying to discover a counterspell--that won't make things worse in some
other way! But until then, just...treat the symptoms. Fight the monsters, help the
people displaced," she shrugged, "the obvious things. And keep arena deaths down,
because the blood feeds the spell." She began to twist a lock of hair around her
finger, tugging on it thoughtfully. "I've been thinking about a counterspell. The
original magic came from Krael, however it got to the present. Maybe the
counterspell can be found there."
"Searching Krael for the spell that would sink it again will be dangerous," the
old innkeeper and manager warned. "The reports say that there are people there who
are ready to defend it."
"That's what gladiators are for, isn't it?" Adie asked. "Protecting Alastari.
Stopping this spell that is bringing the past to life falls under that heading."

Great Dane looked over the improvised barricade that divided the island of Iaye
from the risen city of Krael and whistled. "You said they were regular people," he
commented, scanning the muddy approach. "Those are, I guess they're zombies."
Goff shrugged. "I guess the regular people I saw when the city first rose were
wizards, at least some of them. And there must have been plenty of dead around for
them to turn into zombies. Damn. How do you kill something that's already dead?"
Great Dane glanced back at the people straggling toward the barricade from
Iaye's side. "That isn't going to be our first problem. The first one is, how do we
get our defenders to stand fast against them? Those are fishermen, farmers,
shopkeepers. You think they're going to fight zombies?"
     "Gladiators, too," Goff protested.
"Not enough, if the wizard in charge of those zombies knows anything about

                             Notes from the arena champ.

I have defeated M. Chardinee, for which amazing feat I have been named
Duelmaster of Kati-Tei. Wow. I don't know if I can contain my excitement.
On a more positive note, if there's going to be adventure in the North Woods, I
want in on it! I would be a useful person to have along.

                                      SPY REPORT

Welcome KATI-TEI. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights
have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... Biff! Pow! KATI-TEI
watched with glee as GLAD TO MEAT YOU got knocked off top spot by MEMPHIS MAFIA!
Phhbltt! Too much drinking and too little dodging gave GLAD TO MEAT YOU a 0-2-0! I
got a good laugh out of it! Ya gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the
table! Thrust! Block out the pain! BLITZKRIEG is now ranked 7th with a 3-0-0 turn.
It seems so recently people were saying LOOD FOOD was washed up, finished. But 3-1-0
moved them up 3. I guess they're washed no more... What's with SADISTA FAIRBORNE?
She actually beat WANDERERS' JEHU, and walked away with 25 more points from the
fight. Major screwup at WANDERERS. JEHU lost 12 points to SADISTA FAIRBORNE. Some
new strategies, perhaps? Maybe JEHU will provide more easy wins... KATI-TEI, set
your sights on KHALHUMS DWARF. He'll be happy to entertain all requests after
defeating MARS. TORA HAMLIN looked pretty Duelmasterlike as she took KATI-TEI's top
spot with 88 points. Now, what will MARS do? Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give
up fighting!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. How
well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of
practive, MEMPHIS MAFIA! In my day, no team with a 12-11-1 would scare me off!
What's the problem, LOOD FOOD? How well I know the feeling of being the most
challenged warrior, SATURN! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you.
S&M&MS of LOOD FOOD knows how to pick 'em. He challenged SATURN of WANDERERS who is
up by 19. Now was this a wise move? S&M&MS perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as
he was bested by SATURN and ended up with 4 recognition points. I hate going to the
effort of writing about the kind of fights that JEALOUSY gets in. She fights people
like HOLY SCHLITZ, 13 points below. I thought JEALOUSY showed great skill and
promise when she was overcame by HOLY SCHLITZ. All right, so I slept through it!
Big deal!
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You
young rapscallions, take note!
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? All
work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Practice,
practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

P.S. Just what one would EXPECT of a dwarf!

It isn't my business to deal with Jaywalkers and Double Parkers. -- Bethanne Grace

How many TIMES do I have to say that we should allow the Veteran Mercenary to retire?
-- Tora Hamlin

I don't even want to talk about it. -- Jehu

Bookie -- Actually, we have met. In the Delarquan arenas, I manage under the name of
Nick, and I know I've seen you around there. -- Leeta
P.S. Yes.
P.P.S. I'm not a wrestler, I'm a wall of steel. I graduated from Zorpunt and ended
up managing a bunch of Andorian teams. And I had intended a career training
warhorses...which is not at ALL the same! Oh, well, it's a job.

Leeta -- I apologize for being repetitive last turn. (double ads printed and all)
It looks like you and I are the only talkative ones in here and half the arena went
inactive at a weird FE. I hope they come back but even if they don't I think I'm
going to stay a while. I'm quite fond of this team now. Maybe I can work up to
fight "Ruthless Jaywalker" as well. (grin) -- Bookie

Editor -- Speaking of Ruthless Jaywalker, wtf is up with that name? What's next?
Litterer of Doom? -- Bookie
P.S. Don't fret over the lost ads, I'm getting used to it. (sigh)

It's amazing what comes up when you're very tired.... As far as Litterer of
Doom, I think I like it.... -- Ed., very tired today

Holy Schlitz -- Holy Schlitz! You're big! -- Jealousy
P.S. Just a guess...is your manager Alfredo?

Editor -- (re: cheap date) What you tryin' to imply and/or have you been talkin' to
Sandy? *chuckle* -- Bookie

*halo* Me, I imply nothing. Really. -- Ed.
P.S. Sandy said to tell you I haven't been talking to her.

Leeta -- Froth beer bash? Hmm, sounds interestin'. If they don't do it I will. KLK
invitational beer bash...coming to a tavern near you soon! -- Bookie

Veal Deal -- No thank, I'd rather be a vegetarian. -- Froth'rella

Polarius -- Come back! This arena just shrunk! -- Bookie

Umm, offbeat role-play question: can a manager purchase or own a local tavern in a
city? -- Bookie

All you have to do it write it and it's yours. -- Ed., feeling generous

St. Valentine's Day Massacre Update

We are pleased to announce that the kLk sponsored St. Valentine's Day Massacre
kill contest in DM 36 is off to a great start. We are also pleased to announce that
in addition to the 10 team rollups we are also able to offer the renaming of a dark
arena warrior as a prize to the manager with the most kills. The contest is only 2
turns old and is still wide open. There are currently 5 managers tied with one kill
each. Anything can still happen so hurry up and get into the arena.
On a personal note, no other alliances have entered the arena in force to
challenge the kLk dominance. We were expecting The Firm to put up a fight for their
supposed home arena. But, they were a no show. Guess they proved what they are
really made of. *evil grin*
Perhaps another alliance would like to step in to give us a challenge. We are
throwing down the gauntlet. Perhaps the Chaos Inc. boys I keep hearing about would
like to step in and challenge the kLk for arena dominance. If you don't show up,
Chaos, don't feel bad. FAR better managers than you have been invited into Jhans but
have chosen to pass on the offer.
So if you consider yourself worthy to compete, like fierce competition, and
enjoy arenas where the personals are as fierce as the fighting, come visit JHANS DM
36. We're already planning our next contest, "Capture the Flag," and have a
storyline being actively worked on in the arena. Whatever you like about DM you can
find it in JHANS.

Has anyone seen it in print that the "Goat" is leaving the "Cartel"? There were
some diplos to the effect of a special branch of the Cartel being formed, like secret
societies, governmental agencies and alliances certain agendas are developed. To
obtain the desired effect of any agenda only key personnel can be used. The "Goat"
is "Cartel" so until you see it with me announcing that I am not Cartel, remember,
"The Agenda of the Core is for you to fight for." I hope this stops the confusion.
