                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

After finishing off his awe-inspiring 1-3 performance at the recent face-to-face
tournament, Porterhouse Arrest was ready to resume his normal day-to-day activities
back home at Kati-Tei. Although he would have preferred to have had a better
performance, he knew he was mostly outclassed by the finely tuned and turbo-trained
fighting machines that were fielded by the other managers in attendance. Master
ratings were seemingly awarded like candy in his class, whereas all Porterhouse had
to show for his efforts was one Advanced Expert and one Expert rating. Hell, some of
the uber-warriors out there had ratings like his prior to even having had a single
arena fight! But Porterhouse liked to think of himself more as a "fine wine," one
that would not reach his full potential until later in his career. Unfortunately he
realized, it would probably come much later, when he reached the Isle of the Eye, if
he was lucky and skillful enough to make it there in one piece.

Despite his current handicaps, however, he was not faring all that badly.
Porterhouse did surprise everyone (including his manager Alfredo Frothingslosh) by
going 5-3 earlier in the Apprentices class. And his 5-1 arena record was nothing to
sneeze at either, even though Kati-Tei was not exactly a "tough" arena.

While reading his current matchup posted at the Frothingslosh guildhouse, he was
approached by his manager with some rather surprising news.

"Porterhouse you're in luck," quipped Alfredo in a somewhat blunt fashion. "You
might not have expected something like this so soon, but as it turns out, you are
actually fighting for the Duelmaster's throne this week."

Porterhouse was understandably floored. "You've got to be kidding! How the hell
could that be? I'm not ready to fight any of those guys up there!!"

"Well, my friend, a lot of it has to do with the fact that most of the Champions are
not fighting. Kiar Jun, Discombobulate, Sadista Fairborne, and Whipped Topping are
all sitting out. You are fighting Bethanne Grace, and as it turns out whoever wins
between the two of you is going to take the throne by default."

"Do I have any chance at all to beat her?" Porterhouse asked hopefully.

Alfredo Frothingslosh then went up beside his young gun and gave him a fatherly pat
on the back. "Actually, believe it or not, you do. We've been scouting her, and
despite her experience and decent record, Bethanne Grace is not all that good. She
is a Wall of Steel but her defenses are questionable at best. If you just come out
hard and try to take her out quick, I think you've got a good chance."

Now Porterhouse's nervousness was turning into excitement. "Well then, I will do my
best to win!" he exclaimed with renewed enthusiasm.

The bout was only a few days away. Porterhouse put in a few extra hours of training
every day so that he would be prepared as well as possible for the match. Then
before he knew it, the day arrived.

Bethanne Grace stepped out onto the sands in a sexy lowcut outfit of leather armor,
apparently trying to distract her male opponent. Her breasts gleamed with sweat and
heaved up and down as she breathed. "That will not work on me, missy," Porterhouse
stated confidently. "I will poke you with my shortspear right between those
beautiful mounds of yours." Bethanne gave him a wink as the gong sounded.

Sparks flew as Porterhouse's shortspear clanged with Bethanne Grace's gleaming
scimitar. But then, Porterhouse had a trick of his own. Bethanne held her scimitar
high in a defensive move against what she expected to be an attack against her chest,
but Porterhouse ducked low and scored a quick hit to her right ankle. She did manage
to dodge the next attack, but could never recover completely, and Porterhouse scored
two more quick shots to her legs.

She could not continue; the Arenamaster stopped the fight. Porterhouse Arrest had
won the duel and was the new Duelmaster of Kati-Tei! That night all of the
Frothingslosh teams got together for a spirited celebration. Many tankards of ale
were imbibed that evening honoring their new hometown hero.

                                      SPY REPORT

Welcome KATI-TEI. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights
have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... Biff! Pow! KATI-TEI
watched with glee as WANDERERS got knocked off top spot by OLD SCHOOL! Up 'n down.
Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well,
BLADE BROTHERS 18's 4th moved them up to 2-0-0 place. It seems so recently people
were saying OLD SCHOOL was washed up, finished. But 5-0-0 moved them up 2. I guess
they're washed no more... What's with RILLY SILLY? He actually beat KATI-TEI's
TRUSTWORTHY SCRIBE, and walked away with 21 more points from the fight. Laughs were
big at WANDERERS while they watched JEHU clobber EGGS OVERLY EASY. It lost 7 points
and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. M. CHARDINEE was reminded on
the sands why PORTERHOUSE ARREST is Duelmaster. Wouldn't it be nice to have live
subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted
prisoners.
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... The most avoided team
was CLAN BATTLEAXE. In my day, no team with a 125-149-12 would scare me off! What's
the problem, GLAD TO MEAT YOU? How well I know the feeling of being the most
challenged warrior, BETHANNE GRACE! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to
haunt you. BETHANNE GRACE didn't quite know what to make of a challenge she received
from S&M&MS of LOOD FOOD, who is 21 points below her. S&M&MS perhaps got his just
desserts, seeing as he was subdued by BETHANNE GRACE and ended up with 29 recognition
points.
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? How long have I been here? I got people to see, places to
go...
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? Are
you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it
before you read it. Oh, well. I don't want to overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen

Eggs Overly Easy -- Cousin to Humpty Dumpty, I believe? You know, if he--and you-
were to go for the hard-boiled effect, you might survive bumping around better.
After all, what's a crack or two in the windshield so long as it doesn't crush you?
-- Jehu the helpfully philosophical, or maybe culinarical

A Veteran Mercenary is all Kati-Tei can muster to see me out? The Dueldude title to
go by default to the next-highest-ranked warrior? This is bad. Insulting. Boring,
even, which is worse than insulting because it attacks the arena where it's most
vulnerable--in the ticket office. How many people will pay to come to boring fights?
-- Mars

Porterhouse Arrest -- I don't care what Mars says, what does HE know? I don't want
to be the Dueldude. Or Dueldudette, as I suppose it would be in our cases. Still, I
don't want to do it. I'm glad you have the job, and I sincerely hope that you will
write a Dueldudette's Column to commemorate the situation. -- Bethanne Grace

The Veal Deal -- A fair enough effort, young man, but you didn't seriously expect to
beat ME, did you? The god of time? The planet that can run rings around any other
planet? You are not, I am persuaded, such a fool. -- Saturn

Spork -- You're food? I thought you were part of the eating tackle. One of those
awkward things that tries to do two jobs at once and ends up doing neither really
well. YOU know, like the foons. -- Parnian

30 July 2004
The total number of fights calculated was reported as 250 fights. This is a
misprint. It should have read "over 2,500 fights." -- Baphomet
