TEAM SPOTLIGHT
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Dark and Stormy Night ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
Jehu huddled down into his rain cape and stared gloomily at his horse's ears.
It was a rotten night to be out. Setting aside such details as a rainstorm likely to
begin the Deluge, and a display of lightning fit to split every tree in town, there
was a bad feeling in the air. It was too cold, and the night smelled of more than
rain, it smelled of turned earth, and dead things dug up that shouldn't have been.
And if that wasn't enough, his fare had asked to be driven to a graveyard
outside the town and told him to wait. What the dev-- Better not complete that
word, not tonight! What did the fool think he was doing? Jehu wasn't sure he wanted
to know, but then again...maybe he'd better find out before he got sucked into
something he couldn't get out of. He extended one foot to step down.
"You was told to wait here." The voice was deep and gravelly. And coming from
inside the carriage.
Jehu hadn't seen a second man get in when he picked up the first one near the
arena. He supposed that while he was negotiating with the first man, the second
could have climbed in the other side, but.... "I didn't hire to carry a whole
convention."
"That so?" There was a trace of amusement in the hard voice. "You was hired to
drive here, and then back. You didn't say you'd only take one man. And there'll be
more of us going back."
Jehu shuddered. In this place, at this time of year, that could only mean the
dead. He didn't have anything against dead men, exactly, some of his best friends
were dead, after all. More than he liked to think about, since they'd become
gladiators. But they weren't in his carriage, and he wouldn't want 'em there. "I'll
have to charge extra for cleaning afterward," he said.
"There wasn't no mention of cleaning charges."
"There 'wasn't no mention' of dead men, either!"
There was a long silence. Jehu wasn't about to break it. Right now, he was
ahead, and he wanted to stay that way. At least, he was fairly sure he was ahead.
The voice hadn't REFUSED to pay cleaning charges. Better not give it a chance.
A light flickered in the cemetery, pale as a ghost. It seemed to be down in one
of the little hollows; Jehu couldn't see what caused it. But he saw the bolt of
lightning, big as a tree, with branches all over the sky, that came down to meet it.

SPY REPORT
You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to KATI-TEI once again! What's with BETHANNE GRACE? She actually
beat OLD SCHOOL's HOLY SCHLITZ, and walked away with 19 more points from the fight.
Major screwup at OLD SCHOOL. HOLY SCHLITZ lost 14 points to BETHANNE GRACE. Some
new strategies, perhaps? Maybe HOLY SCHLITZ will provide more easy wins... Try as
he might, JEHU wasn't good enough at persuading PORTERHOUSE ARREST to step down from
the Duelmaster's throne... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on?
I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was BLADE BROTHERS 18. In my day, no team with a 5-3-0 would scare
me off! What's the problem, GLAD TO MEAT YOU? How well I know the feeling of being
the most challenged warrior, GREW SOME GRUE! Don't make idle boasts, they may come
back to haunt you. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights
that THE VEAL DEAL gets in. He fights people like GREW SOME GRUE, 15 points below.
I thought THE VEAL DEAL showed great skill and promise when he was bested by GREW
SOME GRUE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Warriors of KATI-TEI unite. You have only your games to lose! RUBIX CUBESTEAK
looked pretty sick and surprised when she learned GLAD TO MEAT YOU is sending her to
the Dark Arena! Whadd'she expect with a 9-2-1? So GLAD TO MEAT YOU sent RUBIX
CUBESTEAK to the Dark Arena. Big deal. Plenty more fighters where RUBIX CUBESTEAK
came from. Dime a dozen... Now, Spyreporters... Here's some advice: study your
opponent, master many skills, fight dirty.
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. The end
of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! I don't want to
overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen
