"We shouldn't be out here," he muttered. "This isn't safe--" "Row!" Marsham t'Sulej said. The Ambitious Guard wasn't any happier to be out on the lake in a fog than his companions, but he'd be damned if he'd let any of them see his fear. "No good to row till we know which way to go," the Veteran Mercenary said calmly. The dwarf claimed his name was Vargas Tarn and that he had an absolute sense of direction, developed in the tunnels under Murska. "There's a magical field of some kind at work that is distorting directions and all useful clues. We just have to wait it out." "There's something WITH us out here," t'Sulej whispered. "Oh, THANK you for that information!" The Assassin was whispering, too, but his voice dripped sarcasm--and fear--even so. "If it's a Black Ship, I'm just going to lie down and die right here." "I hope it is a Black Ship," Tarn said. "That's why we're here, isn't it? To deliver our emir's answer to the ultimatum? The sooner we meet the Ship, the sooner we're done." "And the sooner the demons on the Ship can eat us," Darrasagh muttered. "You know the emir said no, and we'll be the first to reap the Or Else." "It's an adventure, boy," Tarn said. A grin split his beard. "Better'n dying of boredom." A darker blob in the murk grew and resolved itself into the black hull of a ship. A ship a lot bigger than their rowboat. A voice came down to them. "Dho you haf see answerh?" T'Sulej held up the leather message tube. "Frow i' upf." He tossed it up. The voice above them said something in a language none of them knew. But they all understood the net that dropped over them. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 261): NYTEMAIR of CHAMPIONS OF STEEL (Blackstorm, mgr.) The Concubine was not the match I had hoped for. And I have a question about her. I thought Convincians were supposed to be the moral middle class, so where did the Concubine come from? Did we IMPORT her? Lurline Grace P.S. 11 11 9 13 17 8 15 SC, low/mod SPY REPORT Good day, in KATI-TEI a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. And let's see, PARNIAN fought KUNG-FU MASTER and gained 13 points and contributed to WANDERERS' 4-1-0. Our last turn's Duelmaster has lost, folks, lost to VETERAN MERCENARY, and LURLINE GRACE has made the way for a new Duelmaster! With LURLINE GRACE clearing the throne, WANDERERS of FLUTTERLEE takes a proud seat as KATI-TEI's new Duelmaster, by virtue of recognition points. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Dripping Blade uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle! He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose for good reasons. My mama told me that one. We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and shave it close? Is it really true that KATI-TEI has more dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask... Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in KATI-TEI and I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. There you were at six-foot-six, with a beard, and I expected the announcer to call you a dwarf! How'd you get him to say Shewish, and you with the beard? -- Wherefour Willy And, at five-foot-five, I wouldn't have been SURPRISED to see the Kung-Fu Master listed as a Shew. -- Parnian Ah, don't listen to my teammates! It's just a passing phase the Commission goes through. After all, the Khalhums Dwarf IS a dwarf. -- Flutterlee M. Chardinee lacks patience. -- Saturn P.S. It seems WRONG that Lurline should graduate when I've been here longer. Not that I would wish her to fail, but why haven't I graduated? P.P.S. Yes, okay, I do KNOW, only thirteen wins. But it's still WRONG. Lady Protector Lurline Grace -- We are not at this time able to provide you with "lands." How could we? All the land in this province already belongs to people who have no desire to sell it to the Commission--and the Commission has no money to buy it with, anyway. You would not wish us to simply TAKE it from the legal owners, would you? No, I thought not. But Thane Tolimanj has said he will look around the storage rooms at the manor and see if there's some special thing which might be presented to you as a graduation gift. A sword, or a ring, or something of that sort. -- Arenamaster Jailon 15 September 2005 HAMMER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT Be it known from the highest mountains to the darkest alleys of Alastari that the veteran manager known far and wide as Hammer has now officially retired from sponsoring contests as of September 15, 2005. What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of selected arenas has become a far from fun experience. In other words Hammer has had it! The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from his planned sponsorship of any future contests. There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors. Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the time, effort and money spent over the past several years. May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today. Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history. 19 September 2005 I'd like to say hello to everyone I know that is still around after my being gone for five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord Xiang, D2-101 26 September 2005 Regarding the Regional News: If any of y'all glance at it and find some arenas are behind, rest assured I'll get them caught up next time around. I was trying to unsnarl the darned thing, but it was just getting worse, so I decided gradual and partial was better than not at all or ever. -- The Saint, keeper of lists LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS LURLINE GRACE slimly lost to VETERAN MERCENARY in a 3 minute fight.
