TEAM SPOTLIGHT
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Dark and Stormy Night ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
Lord Protector Jehu hunched into his cloak and stared at his horse's ears. They
were not unusual in any way, just ordinary horse's ears, which is why he was staring
at them. Better by far to look at something normal than at what was going on in the
field to the side of the road.
"I don't see why we have to do this at NIGHT," Flutterlee grumbled.
"It's traditional," Lurline Grace said. She shivered. Even though the two
ladies protector were in the covered passenger compartment of the carriage, they were
damp and cold. "What I don't understand is why we have to dig into the grave at
all." She leaned forward and peered into the rainy night. "They've stopped
wandering around, so I suppose they've found the right grave."
"Tomb, not grave," Flutterlee corrected. "And the Userous, er, Honest Merchant
says he won't even ACCEPT the money to pay off the mortgage unless we bring my
grandfather's seal ring. How were we supposed to know?" she grumbled. "He always
wore it, so we figured he'd want to be buried in it. Nobody told us it was special!"
Lurline shook her head and opened her mouth to reply, but a scream from the
graveyard cut her short. She put her hand on the edge of the carriage and vaulted to
the ground, sword flashing out of its sheath, just as Jehu leaped down from the
driver's seat, equally ready for battle.
Flutterlee clambered down less gracefully and clutched Lurline's arm. "What is
it?"
"Trouble, don't know what. Let go of me!" She began to move toward the edge of
the graveyard and the light. "Shouldn't've let civilians in on this."
Jehu kept even with her. "No choice," he said. "Grave digging and tomb robbing
are unionized. Think how much MORE trouble it would have been with pickets!"
Flutterlee crowded close behind them. "The lantern hasn't moved," she
whispered.
"Sitting on the ground in front of the tomb, I suppose," Jehu said. "That
doesn't bother me. What bothers me is that I don't see anything moving over there.
Such as a gravedigger or two."
"Inside the tomb out of sight," Lurline suggested.
"Oh, no, they couldn't be!" Flutterlee was gripping her friend's cloak now,
almost dragging it off Lurline's shoulders in her agitation. "They were supposed to
come and get me as soon as they had the door open! It shouldn't be anybody but me
who takes the ring from my grandfather, he'd have a fit!"
"So maybe that's what we heard," Jehu said. "Your grandfather having a fit."
"How could he? He's dead! That's the whole problem."
Jehu looked over his shoulder. "Flutterlee, sometimes the dead don't lie quiet.
You should know that!"
"But my grandfather wasn't, well, the kind of Bad person who'd be a ghost! He
would never do anything like that, he'd think it wasn't, well, decent! And it isn't.
Decent. You know. The dead aren't supposed to--"
There was another scream, more desperate than the first but cut off sharply. A
bolt of lightning, lavender green, shot upward from the open tomb.
All three gladiators began to run forward.
SPY REPORT
I can't believe the violence in KATI-TEI! I still haven't told Mom I'm writing
Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... One team deserves special
mention 'cause they moved up 0 after going 4-1-1. Keep it up, WANDERERS! MVP award
for ENRAGE? WRECKING CREW's proud of him after beating RENDER OF VEILS and getting
14 points. Talk about yer major upsets! BLINDED BY KNOWING's match with PAINFIRE
cost him a loss of 7 points! Was that a tear I saw in SKIN ZESTER's eye, as it took
over Duelmastership? And wasn't JAMES DOOLITTLE fit to be tied! I hear the top team
insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for
PR photos.
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. THE PLAGUE
was the most avoided team. Is a 194-180-12 record really that scary? I don't know
what 071406L's been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from
THE PLAGUE, that's fer sher. Like, is DEATH'S DOORMAN popular, or what? He was
challenged the most in all of KATI-TEI! He's got a 11-7-1, is that good? Speaking
of challenging 28 points above did you hear about WILLIAM CRAWFORD of MEDAL OF HONOR
26 vs. THE PLAGUE's DEATH'S DOORMAN? (And how was that intro!) What did WILLIAM
CRAWFORD expect, anyway! Of course DEATH'S DOORMAN won. Next time stick to people
you have a chance against, dummy! For sure, I was holding my breath when I found out
DOMINATOR challenged QUINORE. After all, haven't WRECKING CREW and WANDERERS had a
long standing duel in KATI-TEI? It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but
QUINORE wants me to write about it since he defeated DOMINATOR. Satisfied?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Hey you guys, don't you think your
families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Later, Debby Tonte

Skin Zester -- (in a lack-luster tone) Oh, it's you again. (sigh) Darned
Delarquan. At least you're out of challenge range now. -- Quinore
Reign of Blades -- There are times when I don't like meeting you on the sands, you
know? But there are other times, and I've got a feeling there is going to be one of
them really soon, when having you around at all is a really promising idea. So, uh,
feel like going for a carriage ride at night? -- Valgard
Enrage -- Yes, well, I tried. Did it work? -- Chericille
Hammerjack -- Look, you, my name's not JACK, okay? Go hammer somebody else. --
Forandin
Dai -- You're a mean bustard, right enough. I really, really don't like you. --

P.S. For one thing, you're atypical of your style. Isn't there a rule about that?
Hmm, looks like we've got a serious attitude problem here with our Khalhums Dwarf,
doesn't it? -- Leeta
